Nancy Edens DRYDEN, Va. – Nancy Geree Pendergraft Edens was born in Jonesville, Va., on Saturday, March 8, 1930, and went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at the Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap at the age of 74. She was a lifelong resident of Lee County and was of the Christian faith. She was a very special and loved mother of nine children, 21 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Tom Pendergraft, and second husband, Arthur Edens; one daughter, Deborah Catina Pendergraft; her parents, Alonza and Sally Hall; sisters, Wanda Fritzs and Kaye Livesay; her brothers, Dale and Rolland Hall. Nancy is survived by her sons, Charles Thomas Pendergraft and wife, Gwen, of Corbin, Ky., Ronnie Pendergraft and wife, Susan, of Jonesville, Roger Pendergraft of Church Hill, Tenn., Jeffery Lynn Pendergraft and wife, Lisa, of Pennington Gap, Va., Gary Pendergraft and wife, Donna, of Jonesville; her daughters, Janice Hartley and husband, Rick, of Dayton, Ohio, Donna Browder of Speedway, Ind., and Lana Gilliam and husband, Doug, of Danville, Ind. Jonathan Paul Grubbs ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. – Jonathan Paul Grubbs, age 37, 1165 Powder Branch Road, went to be with the Lord unexpectedly Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, at the Jellico Community Hospital, Jellico, Tenn. He was born in Memphis, but had lived in Carter County for the past fifteen years. He was the son of Ronald and Sandra Hess Grubbs, 112 Wonder Valley Road, Bristol, Tenn. He attended Watauga Valley Free Will Baptist Church. Mr. Grubbs was a software design consultant. He graduated from East Tennessee State University. Bentley Horton SWORDS CREEK, Va. – Mr. Bentley Horton, age 74, of the Long Branch section, passed away Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, in a Johnson City V.A. hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born in Raven, Va., and was the son of the late Bill and Molly Elizabeth Reynolds Horton, both Russell County natives. He had made his home in the Russell County area all of his life and was a former automobile body repairman for Pats Pontiac in Raven. He was a member of the Casey-Shortt VFW Post No. 9640 and Tazewell County Chapter No, 31 DAV. He was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Lee, Paul and Donald Horton. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family in her generation. Ledbetter Mr. Robert R. Ledbetter, age 73, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, at Bristol Select Specialty Hospital after an extended illness. He was born in Oqawka, Ill, on Oct. 6, 1930, to Sofia and Arche Ledbetter. He had been a 13-year resident of Blountville and was raised in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. Bob was an avid Chicago Cubs and Dale Earnhart fan. He was a lifetime member of Moose Lodge 579, Burlington, Iowa. Preceding him in death were his parents, three brothers and two half-brothers. He is survived by his wife, Patti Ledbetter, Blountville; three daughters, Dawn Marie Kalo, Glendale, Ariz., Lori Ann Ledbetter and Donna Jean Ledbetter, Des Moines, Iowa; stepson, Ritchie Inns, Lincoln, Neb. Also surviving is one brother, Rev. Henry L. Litton, 67, of the Hansonville community, slipped away quietly to the arms of his Lord Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Litton was born June 27, 1937, in Powell Valley, Va., to the late Frank and Minnie Harrison Litton. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He loved his Lord whom he accepted into his life on March 13, 1999. His great love was God, his family and fishing. Mays Jr. SEVEN MILE FORD, Va. – Rev. Sidney F. Mays Jr., age 80, went to be with the Lord Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, in Smyth County Community Hospital. Rev. Mays was an ordained elder in the Church of the Nazarene, having served for over 50 years. He touched many lives with his love for the Lord, church, family and he never wavered. Rev. Mays started the Newell Glendale Church of the Nazarene in 1954 and started the Seven Mile Ford Church of the Nazarene in 1978. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Army. In 1945, he witnessed the signing of the peace treaty between America and Japan to end World War II. Rev. Mays is survived by his devoted, loving wife of 58 years, Helen F. Mays of Seven Mile Ford; four daughters and sons-in-law, Judy Booth and husband, Chuck, of Raleigh, N.C., Donna LeMasters and husband, Larry, of Chesapeake, Va., Ann Williams and husband, Lawrence, and Bonnie Hayton and husband, Chris, all of Marion; one son and daughter-in-law, Allen Mays and wife, Debbie, of Bristol Virginia; two sisters, Garnett Cody and Shirley Mentz, both of Covington, Va.; one brother, Basil Mays of Timberville, Va.; 12 grandchildren, Tonya, Tyann, Eric, Shannon, Kristi, Shawn, Jeremy, Les, Ashley, Ryan, B.J. and Alexus; 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Rasnake LEBANON – Kenny L. Rasnake 81, died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, in the Russell County Medical Center, and his wife Arabell Smith Rasnake 84, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, in Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center from injuries received in an automobile accident. Kenny L. Rasnake was born Feb. 28, 1923, in Russell County, a son of the late Robert Rasnake and the late Pippie Smith Rasnake. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a farmer and was of the Baptist faith. Arabell Smith Rasnake was born April 23, 1920, in Buchanan County, a daughter of the late Charles Smith and the late Mary Presley Smith, she was of the Baptist faith. In addition to their parents, they were preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Brewer; a granddaughter, Mary Ann Brewer; a great grandson, Rodney Marvin Hamilton; and a son in law, Rodney O’Quinn; also several brothers and sisters. They are survived by four daughters, Kate and husband, Edgar Grizzle, Cleveland, Dephia O’Quinn, Lebanon, Vernie and husband, Ira Smith, Cleveland, and Betty and husband, Jim Peery, Cedar Bluff; a son, Darrell and wife, Gale Rasnake, Rosedale; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Mr. Rasnake is survived by a sister, Sallie Artrip, Cleveland, and Mrs. Rasnake is also survived by a sister, Ella Mae Jordan, Allentown, Pa. They are also survived by several nieces and nephews. A joint funeral service for Kenny L. and Arabell Smith Rasnake will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004, in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel, with Pastor Larry Robinson and Pastor Duane Musick officiating. Grandsons and friends will serve as pallbearers. Burial will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens, where military honors for Mr. Rasnake will be conducted by the Lebanon V.F.W. Post 9864. Street HONAKER – Mrs. Mary Catherine Street, age 83, passed away Sunday morning, Sept. 5, 2004, in a Richlands, hospital. Born Dec. 16, 1920, in Buchanan County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Tom and Hannah Whitt Shortt. She had spent most of her life in the Russell and Buchanan County areas and was a member of the Church of the Living God in Honaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. James A. Street, one son, Harley B. Street, one granddaughter, Pamela J. Cole, one daughter-in-law, two sons-in-law and several brothers and sisters. In her generation, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survivors include three daughters, Geneva Justus of Rosedale, Va., Anita Justus of Honaker and Gracie Garrison and her husband, N.J., of Honaker; four sons, Rev. Arnold Street of Honaker, John L. Street and his wife, Deloris, of Honaker, Jimmy Lee Street and his wife, Alice, of Lebanon, and Curtis Street and his wife, Tammy, of Raven; one daughter-in-law, Maudie Street of Honaker; sixteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren also survive. The family would like to extend a special thanks to caregivers, Sheila Elkins, Betty Lester, Linda Dye, Norma Jean Vance, Dr. Faisal Chaudhry and Community Health nurses. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Dennis Puckett, Rev. Hershel Farmer and Rev. Darrell Sutherland officiating. Lora Wilson Lora Kate Large Wilson, 91, went to be with the Lord Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Wilson was born Dec. 1, 1912, in Washington County, Va., a daughter of the late Walter and Lucy Woods Large, and had made her home in Bristol all of her life. She was a retired cook at Euclid Avenue Holiday Inn and a member of the Open Door Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Andis and Francis Trivett and husband, Bobby; three sons, Robert Wilson, Earl Wilson and Edward Wilson and wife, Pat; two brothers, Forest Large and Willie Large; 19 grandchildren; several great- grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday Sept. 7, 2004, in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastors Mike Leonard and Thomas Thacker officiating.
