Betty Welch Mason MARION – Betty Welch Mason, age 71, died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. Mrs. Mason was born in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late John Franklin and Mary Alice Watson Welch. She was a former employee of West Knitting, a former ward secretary with Chesterfield County Memorial Hospital, a former director of nursing secretary with Chesterfield General Hospital, and retired in 1991 as a Chesterfield County Home Health secretary. Mrs. Mason was a former instructor with Chesterfield-Marlboro TEC, a past president of Tri-County Mental Health Association and was a faithful member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church for many years. She was married to the late Herman Mason and was preceded in death by an infant daughter in 1965. Survivors are her daughter, Karen M. Faulkenberry and Dennis E. Bush of Marion; two grandsons, Jason W. Faulkenberry and wife, Penny, of Frankton, Ind., and James P. Kent Odum Sr. BRISTOL, Tenn. – A. Kent Odum Sr. passed away Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004, at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was a lifelong resident of Bristol and the son of the late William Jap and Claudia Richards Odum. Mr. Odum served as a tech sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, as crew chief of a B-47 Bomber with the 303rd SAC, 358th Squadron, during the Korean War (1951-1954). Upon his return from the war, he began working with his father at Odum Electric Service and later worked with United Coal Company, supervising the construction of First Colony subdivision in Bristol Tennessee. He was a member of the Bristol County Club for over 40 years and president of the club for two terms, as well as serving as greens chairman for several years. He was an avid golfer and loved playing with "the herd." He attended Highlands Fellowship in Abingdon. Survivors include his daughter, Robin L. Odum of Atlanta; two sons, Alan K. Odum Jr. and Lance D. Odum, both of Bristol Tennessee; one daughter-in-law, Regina Pinkston Odum of Bristol Tennessee; one sister, Dawn Smith Engleking of Houston; one grandson, Wes K. Sumner of Atlanta; and his most loyal companion, "Hays." The funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m., Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at the graveside in Glenwood Cemetery, with Rev. Peters, age 87, of 2634 Highway 11W, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004, in the Bristol Nursing Home. Born Jan. 14, 1917, in Mineral Bluff, Ga., Mrs. Peters had spent most of her life in the Kingsport and Blountville area. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Sally Paris Dockery and the widow of Willie T. Peters. She was a homemaker and was a member of the Freedom Worship Center in Blountville. Survivors include her daughter, Rebecca M. Edwards; one son, Randy Peters and his wife, Mary; grandchildren, Rhonda Wells and her husband, Willie, Robert L.
