Barlow BRISTOL, Va. – Darrell Stephen Barlow, 52, of 5470 Dishner Valley Road, died Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Welch, W.Va., and a son of Bob and Pauline Dye Barlow of Bristol Virginia. Darrell had lived in Bristol since 1961 and was a 1970 graduate of John S. Battle High School. He was a retired sergeant with the Bristol Virginia Fire Department, having 27 years of service. Survivors, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Susan Matney Barlow; his daughter, Leigh Ann Barlow of Knoxville; his stepson, A.D. Jones of Knoxville; two sisters, Trina Fraley and her husband Frank and Kathy Weaver and her husband Jeff, all of Bristol Virginia; his grandson, Skyler Boystov of Johnson City; his special mother-in-law, Elizabeth Matney of Bristol Tennessee; special nephew, Chase Weaver of Bristol Virginia; and several other nieces and nephews. Boughers RISING SUN, Md. – Gordon Neal Boughers died Sept. 9. He was 70. Born in Bristol Tennessee, he was the son of the late John Simon and Virginia Morton Boughers. Family said Mr. Boughers will be remembered most for his 35- year career as a contractor and land developer in Baltimore, Harford and Cecil counties. He had diverse interests and hobbies, including music, airplanes, refurbishing antique cars, archery, boating, water skiing, hunting, fishing and occasionally bringing home exotic pets. He also had a compassion for stray animals. An Army veteran, Mr. Boughers was a private pilot. He developed an independent suspension for the three-wheeled motorcycle, which was granted a U.S. patent in the mid-1970s. He was a member of Swift Airplane Association and the Darlington Masonic Lodge. He was a 32nd degree Mason. Mr. Boughers is survived by his wife of 43 years, Carmaleda Kincer Boughers; their three children, Cheryl Brophy of Annville, Pa., Ward Boughers of Conowingo and Sandra Rogers of Whiteford; grandchildren, Gabriel and Ethan Mink of Abingdon, Zachery Mink of Annville and Emily Boughers of Conowingo; a brother, Bobby Boughers of Bristol Tennessee; and sisters, Betty Alaria of Bullhead, Ariz., Phyllis Farley of Richmond and Louise Alfred and Mildred Booher of Bristol Tennessee. William Roy Calhoun ABINGDON – Mr. William Roy Calhoun, age 71, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Mr. Calhoun was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during the Korean conflict and was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Montezuma, Ga. He had retired as vice president of Community Bank and Trust of Cornelia, Ga., and was also a member of the Level Grove Baptist Church in Cornelia. He is survived by his wife, Loretta J. Adeline Rowland MARION – Adeline Rowland, age 79, passed away Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, in the Smyth County Community Hospital. Frank James Rynes Jr. CASTLEWOOD – Frank James "June" "Bottles" Rynes Jr., 83, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, at Russell County Medical Center, Lebanon. He was born in Russell County, Va., son of the late James Franklin and Georgia Harrison Rynes. He was a retired miner and member of U.M.W.A. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Trucilla Patrick Rynes, three brothers, Authur, John and David Rynes, and one stepson, William Kegley. He is survived by his wife, Bernice Rynes; one daughter, Connie Estes of Palo Alto, Calif.; one son, Randy Rynes of Castlewood; three stepdaughters, Renee Bays of Blountville, Yvonne Gross of Piney Flats and Fredia Adkins of Bristol Virginia; one sister, Evenlyn Day of Castlewood; four brothers, Bill Rynes of Castlewood, Bobby Rynes of Castlewood, Edward Rynes of St. Paul and Jack Rynes of South Carolina; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Frank James "June" "Bottles" Rynes Jr. will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, in Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel, Castlewood, with Rev. John A. Kiser officiating. Interment will follow in Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood. Pallbearers will be Joseph Duncan, Robert Patrick, Curtis Adams, David Hale, David Rynes and Rex Ireson. Clyde Salyer BRISTOL, Va. – Clyde Arthur Salyer, 90, of Route 4, passed away Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, at his residence. He was born in Scott County, Va. Mr. Salyer was a retired farmer. He was a member of Barkers Chapel Evangelical Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Stella Grizzel Salyer (1992), granddaughter, Lisa Ramey Vaughn (1990), and three infant children. Surviving are his daughters, Mrs. Brenda Ramey, Mrs. Della Cox and Mrs. Wilma Rush, all of Bristol Virginia, and Miss Carolyn Salyer, Hillsville, Va.; sons, Gerald Salyer, Saltville, Larry Salyer, Mendota, Va., and Roger Salyer, Hiltons, Va.; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Mrs. Martha Grizzel, Gate City, Mrs. Dora Fugate, Bristol Virginia, Mrs. Mammie Vaughn, Weber City, Va., Mrs. Emma Zilla Grizzel, Bristol Virginia, and Mrs. Effie Lane, Hiltons; and brother, Junior Salyer, Mendota. Lester Stuart Smith ABINGDON – Mr. Lester Stuart Smith, age 89, passed away at Valley Health Care Center, Sunday Sept. 12, 2004. Mr. Smith was born in Smyth County and was retired from Olin Chemical Corporation. He was never married and had lived most of his adult life with a cousin, Pleze E. Smith (deceased) and his family, who became his extended family. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, two sisters and two brothers. Survivors: two very special caregivers, Martha B. Smith and Janie S. Anderson of Abingdon; numerous members of his extended family and three half-sisters, Iona Fay Kroening, Edith Hatchell and Georgia Havens. Funeral services for Mr. Smith will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at Henderson Funeral Home, with Rev. Jeff Johnson and Rev. Gary Blackwell officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Mount Rose Cemetery. Friends and family will meet at the cemetery 15 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:30 until 7:45 p.m., just prior to the funeral service.
