Compton VENIA, Va. – Mr. Kinzer M. Compton, age 90, passed away Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at his home. Born May 3, 1914, in Drill, Va., he was a son of the late John Andrew and Nora Victoria Stacey Compton. A lifelong resident of the area, he was a charter member of the Venia Chapel Free Will Baptist Church for 58 years, where he served as a deacon and treasurer for several years. He had also served as a treasurer of the Buchanan County Conference for approximately 40 years. He was a retired coal miner, dairy farmer and carpenter. He was an U.S. Navy veteran. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Gladys Compton, one infant daughter, Nora Ellen Compton, one infant grandson, David McGlothlin, one son-in-law, Ryland Ball, his stepmother, Ethel Compton, three sisters, Dorothy Dye, Agnes McGlothlin and Fayrene Ray, and three brothers, Marion Andrew Compton, Hurley Compton and Clinton Compton. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Joyce Compton of Roanoke; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Helen Ball of Council, Va., Faye and Rean McGlothlin of Vansant, Va., Annie and Earl Ball of Council, Va., and Rema and Danny B. Harris of Honaker; five sisters, Draper Dye of Vinton, Va., Inez Honaker of Honaker, Janet Fuller of Lebanon, Judy Osborne of Cedar Bluff and Mae Edna Stevens of Honaker; three brothers, Foster Compton, Sidney Compton and Harold Compton, all of Honaker; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 10 stepgreat-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; one stepgreat-great- granddaughter; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends and neighbors also survive. She was born in Abingdon and lived most of her life in Bristol, until moving to Florida eight years ago. She was the daughter of the late Albert and Mary Raines and was also preceded in death by her husband, Phillip Delano. Joseph Henry Keen DORAN, Va. – Mr. Joseph Henry Keen, age 73, passed away Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at Maple Grove Health Care Center at Lebanon, following a brief illness. He was born on July 23, 1931, in Buchanan County, Va., to the late Lazarus and Gracie Hale Keene of Council, Va. He was a retired coal miner with Island Creek Coal Company and a member of the UMWA and the Richlands Moose Lodge. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Deladess G. Wilson Keene, his second wife, Wilma Sue Keene, one daughter, Sandy Gail Keene, an infant son, Tommy L. Keene, and one sister, Dorothy Marie Ball. Max Wheeler Smith RICHLANDS – Mr. Max Wheeler Smith, age 66, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at a Bristol Tennessee hospital following a brief illness. He was born in Tazewell County, Va., and was a son of the late Jeff and Laura Frances Wheeler Smith, both Tazewell County natives. He was a lifelong resident of the Tazewell County area, was a 1956 Tazewell High School graduate and received his business degree from Southwest Virginia Community College. He was manager and secretary/treasurer of V.H. Holmes and Sons Inc. for 45 years. He served his church, the Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ in Richlands, as Sunday School director, board of trustees, secretary/treasurer and door keeper for 40 years. Max loved his family, church, garden and nature. He was an active member of Tazewell County Sportsmen’s Club for the past 26 years, having served as founder of the wildlife committee, president and was on the board of directors. He will be greatly missed by his family, church, friends and business associates, but Heaven has gained a special angel. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Edna Hartong, Carol Shrader and Reva Elswick; two brothers, Bascom "Buck" Smith and Robert "Bob" Smith. Survivors are his loving wife of 47 years, Mrs. Emily Ann Stinson Smith; two daughters, Mrs. Iris Martin of Richlands and Mrs. Crystal Gibson of Cedar Bluff; one son, Mr. Mark W. Smith, age 75, passed away on Sept. 17, 2004, at Wellmont Hospice House. He was the son of the late Noah and Etta Vance Smith and was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area. Mr. Smith retired from Virginia Wholesale, where he worked as a salesman. He was a Mason and a member of the King Masonic Lodge 461. He was preceded in death by one brother, Franklin Noah Smith. Survivors include wife, Peggy J. Wallace ABINGDON – Cheryl Smith Wallace, age 60, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Born on Aug. 22, 1944, she was a daughter of the late Laban Smith and Wilma Meade Smith. Cheryl was an artist from a very early age, but began her formal training at 18, entering the graphic design program at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. She later graduated with a bachelor of art degree and did her graduate work in art at East Tennessee State University. Cheryl was a highly respected artist, who exhibited art shows at the Virginia Highlands Festival and shows held by the Bristol Virginia Art Guild, as well as the Gallery at the Arts Depot in Abingdon and various showings throughout the region. Ms. Wallace was a loved and respected art teacher at Lebanon High School for over 30 years. She also taught art classes for Southwest Virginia Community College. Cheryl inspired students to find their own creative talent, which led many to strive to succeed at their own art careers because she wasn’t just a teacher, she was a friend. "If your art is not personal, if you do not have a passion for it, then you should have no reason to complete a piece of artwork," were the words she used to describe her passion for art. Her family and friends admired her creative talents and love of life. She is survived by a daughter, Dale McGill of Morgantown, W.Va.; a son, David Wallace of Cleveland, Va.; a sister, Fern Smith Yane of Hot Springs, Va.; two grandchildren, Keelin and Rohen McGill; her stepmother, Catherine Smith of Bristol Virginia; and an aunt, Juanita Garland of Kingsport. Wyatt WISE – Forrest G. Wyatt, 74, passed away Saturday night, Sept. 18, 2004, in the Norton Community Hospital, Norton. He was of the Baptist faith, a retired campus policeman of the University of Virginia of Wise, a former police chief of the Town of Wise and a peacetime veteran, serving in the U.S. Army. Forrest was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert and Viola Wyatt; six brothers, Cecil, Okey, Edward, Emmett, Alfred and Murley; five sisters, Minnie, Maggie, Katherine, Mattie and Marie; and several nieces and nephews. Surviving are his wife, Edna; two sons, Randall and his wife Marlene and Joel and his wife Davene; three granddaughters, Jessica, Alex and Haleigh; one grandson, Justin; a stepgrandson, David; a great-grandson, Dru; two brothers, Johnny and Charles; a sister, Lily; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services will be conducted 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, in the Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel, Wise, with the Rev. Jim Smith and Rev. Christopher Campbell officiating. Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, in the Dingus Cemetery, Wise. The family will receive friends Monday evening 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Sturgill Funeral Home, Wise. Sturgill Funeral Homes, Wise, is in charge of arrangements.
