Born in Tazewell County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Walter Jackson and Mary Newberry McGhee. She was a member of the Richlands Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Edith Burgess, two brothers, Jack McGhee and Troy McGhee. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Henley L. Altizer; two daughters, Susan A. Ball and husband Bobby of Cedar Bluff and Karen Newberry and husband Ken of Tazewell; one son, Michael L. Altizer and wife Judy of Pounding Mill; three granddaughters, Angelia J. Ella Tiller Ball DAVENPORT, Va. – Mrs. Ella Compton Tiller Ball, age 94, passed away Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, in a Richlands hospital. Born June 1, 1910, in Dickenson County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Bartemus and Emma Viola Deel Compton. She had lived and worked in Dayton, Ohio, for 23 years, moving back to Davenport in 1950, where she owned and operated Tiller’s General Store fr 15 years. She was of the Lutheran faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Asa Tiller, her husband, Claude Ball, two sisters, Ollie Duty and Maude McFarlane, and four brothers, Toy Compton, Fred Compton, Tivis Compton and Basil Compton. In her generation, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Norma and Jack Owens of Council, Va.; three grandchildren, Janet Sutherland and her husband John, Jackie Owens and wife Vicki, and Jody Mathis and her husband Jeff; five great-grandchildren, Kellie Harris and husband Travis, Aaron Ratliff and friend, Sylvia Rose, Jessee Owens, Hannah Mathis and Madison Mathis; two step-great-grandchildren, Ross Sutherland and Taylor Sutherland; one great-great-grandson, Baily Harris; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Kathleen A. Sproles BLUEFIELD, Va. – Kathleen Sproles, 87, passed away Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at Westwood Center afte a lengthy illness. Born Dec. 13, 1916, at Mendota, Va., she was the daughter of the late William and Hattie Hurt. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Sproles, three brothers and a sister. Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Statzer and husband Bill of Bristol Virginia and Phyllis Brown and husband Jerry of Bluefield, Va. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Beverly Immel and husband Jim, Lebanon, Ind., Sharon Jones Williams and husband Mike, Arnold, Mo., Richard Statzer and wife Cathy, Indianapolis, and Eric Brown and wife Kim, Bluefield, Va.; great-grandchildren, Chad and Kimberly Jones and Wade and Matthew Statzer; step-great-grandson, Michael Williams; and several nieces and nephews.
