Hattie Mae Spangler, 95, Bristol Tennessee Jack William Baer BRISTOL, Va. – Jack William Baer, age 75, passed away Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born in Bristol Tennessee on Nov. 21, 1928, and was the son of the late George Cleve Baer and Willie Mumpower Baer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a member of Patton Crosswhite VFW Post 6975 of Bristol. As a lifelong resident of the Bristol area, he was the manager of Bristol Dry Cleaners and Furriers for over 30 years and later worked for over 10 years with Twin City Federal Savings and Loan, before retiring in 1994. He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and was also active in the Meals on Wheels program. Jack will be missed, but will always be present and celebrated in the hearts of his family, church and many friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Ted Baer of Detroit. Survivors include his loving wife of 51 years, Brenda Baer; one daughter, Pam Jones and husband, Charlie, of Bristol Virginia; one son, Greg Baer and wife, Janine, of Dayton, Ohio; four grandchildren, Chad Jones of El Centro, Calif., Brad Jones of Bristol Virginia and Meredith and Abby Baer, both of Dayton; three sisters, Anne Cross, Frances Reich and Fannie Hunsucker; two brothers, David Baer and Victor L. Baer, all of Bristol; several nieces and nephews and a very special little neighbor, Turner Lyon. The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, in Akard Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Richard Mullan and Rev. Bill Slagle officiating. The committal service and interment will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at the graveside in Mountain View Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Chad Jones, Brad Jones, Aaron Warrick, Mike Hunsucker, James Hunsucker, Tim Hunsucker, Steve Reich and Joe Lyon. Honorary pallbearers will be Jack King and all men of St. Luke United Methodist Church. He was born in Banner, Va., son of the late Rev. Charlie W. Hileman. He was a member of First Assembly of God in Dante. He was preceded in death by one brother, Ray E. Hileman. Neal Sr. Arlie William Neal Sr., age 70, formerly of Bristol Tennessee, passed away on Sept. 20, 2004, at Catawba Regional Medical Center in Conover, N.C. He was the son of the late Frank and Kate Dunn Neal and had spent most of his life in the Bristol area, before moving to North Carolina. He was a plumber and was a member of True Faith Tabernacle. Mr. Neal was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Neal, a sister and two brothers. Elzie Potter GRUNDY – Elzie Potter, 77 years of age, passed away Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy. Born in Freeburn, Ky., Dec. 26, 1926, he was the eldest son of the late Dewey Potter and Frances Stiltner Potter. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean conflict, member of the Sandy Valley Lodge 17, where he was a 32nd degree Shriner, member of John Ratliff Post of the American Legion, member of the VFW Post and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was baptized Oct. 30, 2000, at the Big Rock Church of Christ and a retired coal miner, having last worked for Loose Jaw Coal Company as a welder. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Sylvia Marie Dawson Potter, four brothers, Sid Potter, Clyde Potter, Kinnard Potter and Sandy Potter, and two sisters, Lorraine Shortridge and Irene Grey. He is survived by one daughter, Janie Sue Potter Wright and husband Randall Clyde of Virgie, Ky.; two brothers, Hershel "Yogi" Potter of Tazewell and Roy Potter of Hurley, Va.; and one sister, Kelsie Endicott of King George, Va. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Gary Dwayne Wright of Virgie and Christie Renea Wright Bartley of Ashland, Ky.; two great-grandchildren, Alexis Morgan Wright and Christopher M. Bartley; and several nieces and nephews. Weaver Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Phyllis Ann Robinson NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Phyllis Ann Robinson, 57, went to be with her heavenly Lord and Father on Friday, Sept. 17, 2004. Raised in Johnson City, she had been a resident of the Peninsula for 14 years. She dedicated her life to social change, be it through her 30-year career as a Child Protective Services case worker, her interest in community activism or her wholehearted involvement in the civil rights movement. Compassionate yet pragmatic, she was quite eager to help people, so long as they were also willing to help themselves. She earned her degree in social work from East Tennessee State University. She later received an MBA from Webster University, while living overseas. A member of Menchville Baptist Church for the past several years, she served on the staff of their Menchville House Project and as a leader of several support groups relating to women’s issues, She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Ken Robinson; one son, Scott Robinson and his wife Samantha of Newport News; her foster father, Charles Miller of Johnson City; two grandchildren, Ainsley and Fionn Robinson; and many loving nieces and nephews. The funeral was held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, at Menchville Baptist Church, Newport News, with Pastor Jim Weston officiating. Interment will be private.
