Born in Russell County, Va., he was the son of the late Thomas and Dora Crawford Ball. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of John Ratliff Post 164. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice Levania Keen Ball; one daughter, Dora Ann Ball Rollins; one half-sister, Polly Margaret Ball; and one half-brother, Morris Clark. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family in his generation. He is survived by two daughters, Kathy Dawn Lester and husband Teddy of Abingdon, Mary Lou Stacy and husband Jeff of Paint Lick; two sons, Donald Richard Ball and wife Peggy Lee of Abingdon, Darrell Wayne Ball and wife Gwen of Paint Lick; seven grandchildren; special care giver, Mary Reynolds, and the staff of the Valley Health Care Center also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff, with Rev. Monroe Greeley officiating. Burial will follow at the Antioch Cemetery at Keen Mountain. Military graveside rites will be conducted by John Ratliff Post 164. He had spent his early life in the area and returned 30 years ago. He was a veteran with the United States military and had retired from Chrysler Corporation in Detroit. He was of the Freewill Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Joe Deel and Powell Deel, and one son, Ricky Lee Deel. Ryburn MACON, Ga. – Mrs. Stella Victoria Ryburn, widow of Oliver Ryburn of Glade Spring, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004. She was a native of Smyth County, Va., and had spent many of her years in North Fork, W.Va. In 1962, she and Oliver moved to Baltimore County, Md. Mrs. Ryburn was a retired school teacher with the Anne Arundel County School System in Annapolis, Md. In 1977, Stella and Oliver retired and moved to Glade Spring, where she was an active member of the Old Glade Presbyterian Church. After Oliver’s death, she moved to the Presbyterian Retirement Home in Georgia. Survivors include two sons, Glenn O. Ryburn Jr. of Fairfax County, Va., and David W. Donald Leon Shaffer BRISTOL, Va. – Donald Leon Shaffer, age 45, of Bristol Virginia and Morristown, Tenn., went to be with his grandparents, Roy M. and Reta Widner and Milborn and Iva Shaffer, and his Lord, Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. He was a native and lifelong resident of the Bristol area and a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Germany as a rifle marksman. He was a dedicated employee as a concrete finisher for Lakeway Concrete Co., Morristown. Donald was a member of Open Door Baptist Church, Bristol Virginia. Survivors include his parents, Leon and Joyce Widner Shaffer of Bristol Virginia; his fiancée, Carole Ann Lemmons of Morristown; two sisters, Carol Jones of Louisville, Ky., and Jennifer Susan Carrier of Bristol Tennessee; one brother, Tony Marken Shaffer of Blountville; two special daughters-to-be, Kim Moorefield and Andra Lawson; and one special grandson-to-be, Stephen Moorefield, all of Morristown; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, in Akard Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Thomas Thacker and Rev. R.D. Wright Sr. officiating. Earl Spencer AMONATE, Va. – Mr. Earl (Tuck) Spencer, age 78, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, in a Richlands hospital, following a brief illness. Born in McComas, W.Va., he was the son of the late Henry King and Lucy East Spencer. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Barnes- Beavers Post 7136. Mr. Spencer was a retired coal miner for Consol and was a member of the UMWA Local 2322 at Amonate. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Clara Smith and Dolly Kalowick. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Betty Sue Stevenson Spencer; two daughters, Wanda Smith and husband Sam of Richlands and Tammy Phipps and husband David of Knoxville; one brother, Tommy Spencer of Carthage, Mo,; two sisters, Evelyn Anderson of Princeton, W.Va., and Joyce McBride of Broken Arrow, Okla.; one grandson, Joshua Brewster of Knoxville; two granddaughters, Samantha Phipps of Knoxville and Katie Smith of Richlands; and several nieces, nephews and a host of friends and neighbors also survive. Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va., with Rev. Roger Barnette officiating. Friends will serve as pallbearers.
