Bunch SEVEN MILE FORD, Va. – Marguerite Dungan Bunch, 86, died Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, in the Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie. Born March 23, 1918, she was the youngest child of James Jessee Dungan and Anna Rush Dungan of Seven Mile Ford. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas A. Bunch, three sisters and four brothers, Lois Brickey, Aileen Dungan, Pauline Cullop, Charles "Shady" Dungan, Ted Dungan, Aubrey Dungan and Bernard Dungan. She graduated from Chilhowie High School in 1936. A graduate of Bluefield Business College, she first taught in the Civilian Conservation Corps at Hungry Mother State Park, 1938-1940. She attended Radford College and the University of Maryland-Baltimore County. In 1947, she began a teaching career that spanned over 25 years in Smyth County and Baltimore County, Md. Prominent in volunteer and senior citizen work in Southwest Virginia for over 20 years, Marguerite was a hospice volunteer and was instrumental in establishing the Cave House Cooperative in Abingdon. She taught crafts to senior citizens at Mount CAP in Marion and worked for District 3 for over 12 years, with her husband (Tommy) delivering Meals on Wheels. In 1995, she received the Virginia Department of Aging’s Ernest Yates Service Award for her service to the elderly. She was a member of Riverside Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She is survived by her three children, Steven Anthony Bunch, Marion, Thomas Allen Bunch, Seven Mile Ford, and Coby Bunch Simerly, Naples, Fla.; four granddaughters, Deanna Lee Collier, Laura Lynn Smith, Heather Allyn Bunch and Amy Rebecca Bunch; four great-granddaughters, Carolyn, Cayla, Cathryn and Cami Collier; three nieces, Carolyn Dungan Woodrum, Page Brickey Arnold and Nancy Dungan Hart; five nephews, Gary Dungan, C.P. Brickey Jr., A.L. Dungan, Jimmy Dungan and Chuck Dungan. Private burial was held at Middle Ford Cemetery at the request of the family. Born in Atkins, Va., Mrs. Cline enjoyed teaching school in Smyth County for many years. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Edgar B. and Martha Purdy Hoofnagle, and two brothers, Henry H. Hoofnagle and James Edward Hoofnagle. Nancy Evans Hawkes GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – Nancy Evans Hawkes, of Link Hills Circle, died Thursday evening, Sept. 23, 2004, at her home, after a lengthy and hard-fought battle with cancer. Nancy was born in Henderson, N.C., and had lived in Greeneville for 37 years. Nancy was a member of the Greeneville First Baptist Church and was a retired employee of the Greeneville City Schools System after 20 years of service, where she worked in a variety of jobs, including her last job for the last three years she worked, she was head of the computer lab at Hal Henard. She was known for her generous spirit, sense of humor, love of entertaining and, most of all, her love of all things Christmas. For the past eight years, Nancy had co-coordinated the preparation and delivery of Christmas lunches to families in need. Nancy is survived by her husband of 42 years, Herbert L. Hawkes III; two daughters and sons-in-law, Robin and David Tartak of Sydney, Australia, and Renne and William Chipman of Singapore; three grandchildren, Michael and Evan Chipman and Benjamin Tartak; and special caregivers, Dr. Joe Austina and Dr. A.K. He was a son of the late James Elbert and Mary M. Rose Sykes. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Europe during World War II. Leonard was preceded in death by his wife, Aliese Rudder Sykes, in December 2002, and a son, Freddie Sykes. He was a native of Bristol and son of the late Carnell and Amanda Presnell Taylor. He was a retired construction electrician and a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. She was born in Buchanan County, Va., a daughter of the late Harrison and Lydia Wolford Blankenship. She was a graduate of Radford University. A longtime resident of Bristol, she retired from H.P. King Company, where she served as a buyer and department manager for more than 25 years. She was a lifetime member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and served two terms as president. She was a member of the Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church and was actively involved in the food pantry, the United Methodist Women and the fellowship class. She was passionate about her ministry to the World War II veterans. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Webb, two sisters, Mae Pond and Hazel Brobeck, and a brother, Charlie Blankenship. Survivors include a sister, Maude Hobgood of Richmond; two nieces, Louise Owens and her husband Gerald of Kingsport and Lois Hoffman and her husband Gary of Indialantic, Fla.; three nephews, James H. Blankenship and his wife Jan of Summerfield, Fla., Harry Stiltner and his wife Gail of Spokane, Wash., and Lawrence Stiltner of Kingsport; and among her special friends were Jewel Rader, Louise Honaker, Lorraine Rose and Betty Olsen. The family will receive friends from 2 until 2:45 Sunday afternoon, Sept. 26, 2004, in the Heritage Chapel of Memories of Mountain View Cemetery.
