Elizabeth Louise Sayers, 87, Marion Hazel Cuddy Turner Dan E. Briscoe Jr. BRISTOL, Tenn. – Dan Edward Briscoe Jr., 83, of Bristol Tennessee and Boca Grande, Fla., died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, in Bristol. He was born in Bristol, the son of the late Dan Edward and Kate Arnold Briscoe, and maintained his primary residence in Bristol all of his life. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy Air Corps during World War II and was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He was a real estate investor and owned Briscoe’s Motor Inn. Survivors include his wife, Catherine Gray Briscoe; a daughter, Dana Briscoe Robinette and her husband Joseph Rector Robinette, of Bristol; a son, Cary Gray Briscoe of Bristol; three granddaughters, Catherine Dana Robinette and her husband Hayden Reign Phillips, Jane Elizabeth Briscoe and Courtney Shannon Briscoe; two grandsons, Joseph Judge Robinette and his wife Michelle Anne Broglio and Dan Briscoe Robinette; two great-granddaughters, Briscoe Noell Robinette and Mason Cella Robinette; and a daughter-in-law, Joy Graceffo. He was preceded in death by a son, David Edward Briscoe. The committal service and interment will be conducted at 4:30 p.m. Friday at the graveside in Glenwood Cemetery, with Dr. Gordon Turnbull officiating. Friends and family are invited to the home of Dana and Joe Robinette from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday. Calhoun WISE – Janice Carol Calhoun, age 60, passed away Tuesday night, Sept. 28, 2004, at the Johnson City Medical Center, Johnson City. She was born in Wise County, Va., and lived most of her life there. She had worked as a receptionist for her husband’s welding business. Janice was a very loving person and greatly enjoyed cooking, especially baking. She was a proud Republican and was of the Pentecostal faith. She was a daughter of the late Oakley and Pauline Cox Stanley, and was also preceded in death by an infant brother, Erin Walker Stanley. She is survived by her husband, Jackie Calhoun Sr., Wise; two stepchildren, Charlene (Daniel) Moore, Wise, and Jackie Calhoun Jr., also of Wise; five sisters, Barbara Jones and Markeda Wampler, both of Wise, Donna Sloce, Prestonsburg, Ky., Rhonda Clark and Dedria Hall; six brothers, Darrell Stanley, Robert Stanley, Harold Stanley and Douglas Stanley, all of Wise, Randy Stanley, Appalachia, and Donald Stanley, also of Wise; four stepgrandchildren, Stanley Moore, Robert Moore, Janice Moore and Makayla Moore; several nieces and nephews and a host of other family members and friends. Kyle Shaun Cook RICHLANDS – Kyle Shaun Cook, age 2, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, in a Richlands hospital following a brief illness. Born at Abingdon on Sept. 23, 2002, he was the son of Shaun Kelly Cook and Sarah Maria Ward, both of Richlands. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Alonzo Cook. He is survived by, in addition to his parents, his maternal grandparents, Timothy Ward of Richlands and Harriett Ward of Richlands; paternal grandparent, Patsy Cook of Richlands; great-grandparents, Rev. Thomas and Vicky Ward of Pilgrims Knob, Va., and James and Helen Sisk of Raven, Va.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive. Ray Greene BRISTOL, Tenn. – Carter Ray Greene, age 92, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born in Boone, N.C., a son to the late James H. and Cordelia Austin Greene, and had lived most of his life in the Bristol area. He was retired from the City of Bristol of was a member of Bradley Street Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Richards Greene, and a grandson, Danny Strouth. Survivors include daughters, Roma Jean (Jean) Oliver and husband Bud of Bristol Tennessee and Carolyn Reed of Bristol Tennessee; son, Carl Strouth and wife Ruth of Bristol Tennessee; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at 7 p.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Bill Pealer officiating. Weaver Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Gerald Wayne Hess Mr. Gerald Wayne "Jerry" Hess, age 69, entered into eternal rest on Sept. 26, 2004, in Richlands. Born Dec. 13, 1934, in Richlands, he was a son of the late George P. and Bessie C. Higginbotham Hess. Two infant brothers also preceded him in death. He was a 1954 graduate of Richlands High School. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force. He was also a graduate of the Dell School of Medical Technology in Asheville, N.C. Jerry was a certified lab technician at the Mattie William Hospital in Richlands, approximately 30 years until his retirement. He was also a licensed pilot. He attended the First Christian Church in Richlands. He is survived by his brother, Douglas Hess and wife Nancy of Tazewell; one niece, Nikki Hess Grepiotis (Mike) of Roanoke; one great-nephew, Hunter James Grepiotis of Roanoke; and several aunts, uncles and special cousin and caregiver, Sandy Blankenship, also survive him. She was the widow of Carson Dee Holbrook and was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel L. and Senah M. Hayter, brothers, Charles M. and Blair Hayter, and sisters, Lillian Colley and Grace Margaret Hayter. Surviving are her daughters, Jean Holbrook, Roanoke, and Gail Holbrook, Vinton; sister, Nancy H. Arlington Riffe Jr. ABINGDON – Mr. Arlington Riffe Jr., age 75, passed away, Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, after a lengthy illness. Born in Wyoming County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Arlington and Vergie Riffe Sr. He was a retired employee of the Norfolk Southern Corporation, a deacon at the Painter Creek Church of Christ and a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War. He was also a member of the Iaeger, W.Va., Masonic Lodge 148 AF & AM. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Arvella Riffe; two sons, Arlie Riffe and wife, Mary Ann, of Abingdon and Anthony Riffe and wife, Cynthia, of Grundy; one sister, Viola Holcomb of Bristol Tennessee; three grandchildren, Preston Riffe of Abingdon and Danielle and Courtney Riffe of Princeton, W.Va. Hazel Turner Mrs. Hazel Cuddy Turner died Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, at the age of 90. A native of Bristol Virginia, Mrs. Turner was raised in the family home at 1116 Euclid Ave., and graduated from Bristol Virginia High School. She was a lifetime member of State Street United Methodist Church. An employee of W.T. Grant for over 40 years, she managed the retail store on State Street. Mrs. Turner was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Albert Turner. Survivors included her niece, Virginia Cuddy Bugg of Atlanta, three great-nieces and one great-nephew. Graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, in Mt. View Cemetery, with Rev. Reed Shell officiating.
