He was born March 8, 1937, at Whitetop, to Russell James and Ardna Hart Buchanan. Va., and had lived most of her life in Bristol. She was the widow of William H. Clark and was retired from Sears. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Order of Eastern Star. She is survived by her son, Alan "Ned" Clark and his wife Patty of Bristol Tennessee; a grandson, Roman Christopher Clark of Johnson City; and a brother, Roy Willis of Ridgeway, Va. Hodges DeLand, Fla. – David H. Hodges, 63, of Wild Indigo Drive, the retired general manager of Lloyd Buick Cadillac Oldsmobile in Daytona Beach, died Saturday, Oct. 2, at his home. Mr. Hodges, a 13-year veteran of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, was a native of Elizabethton, Tenn., and moved here in 1984 from Bluff City. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of DeLand. Mr. Hodges was preceded in death by his son, Buddy Hodges, and his brother, Sonny Hodges. He was a native of Washington County, Va., son of the late Thomas J. and Amanda A. Hewitte Jackson. He was a retired self-employed truck driver with Goodpasture Motors and Bristol Metals. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was of the Methodist faith. He was preceded in death by sisters, Ida Jackson, Buelah Goodson, Lucille Clark and Etta Mae Goodman, and brothers, Ritzie Jackson, Freeman Jackson and Rev. Dan Jackson. Margaret McMilian BRISTOL, Tenn. – Margaret T. "Margo" McMilian, age 80, of 129 Lazy Acre Road, went to be with the Lord Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center. Mrs. McMilian was born on Jan. 18, 1924, to the late Floyd and Jenny Mercer Lester. Mrs. McMilian lived the later part of her life in the Bristol area, and was a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church. She was a house mother at the Florida Baptist Childrens Home in Lakeland, Fla., for many years. Mrs. McMilian was a very loving, devoted wife and mother and was preceded in death by her husband, Capt. Larry A. McMilian. Mrs. McMilian is survived by: three sons, Charles H. King II, Dennis H. King and Ed King, all of Bristol Tennessee; seven grandchildren; eight great- grandchildren; and one special niece, Margaret Johnson, of Bristol Virginia. Phillips ETOWAH – James Wendell "Jim" Phillips, age 69, passed away late Saturday night, Oct. 2, 2004, in a local hospital. Mr. Phillips was a member of First Baptist Church of Etowah, where he was an active choir member. A graduate of Columbia Military Academy, he was an athlete who played baseball, football and ran track. Mr. Phillips was a retired U.S. postal inspector, working postal fraud cases all over the United States. During his career, he served in many different cities such as, New York, Washington, D.C., Knoxville, Bristol and Memphis. He organized the first postal security force team at JFK International Airport. Having security clearance to go in and out of the White House, Jim shook hands with two presidents as a postal inspector-John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. During President Johnson’s term in office, Mr. Phillips flew on Air Force One to deliver mail to the Johnson ranch in Texas. After retiring from the Postal Service, he was on the Board of Bristol White Sox for several years and did the PA from the Press Box for the teams, as players tried out for the Major Leagues. When he worked in Knoxville, Jim met and then married his beloved wife, Anne. They moved back to Etowah and have been residents here since 1986. Jim served the city of Etowah as a commissioner and Mayor. Always enjoying athletic events, Jim was the radio broadcast color commentator for several years at Sequoyah High School. Mr. Phillips was the current secretary for the Etowah Rotary Club. He was the son of the late Col. James Wendell and Sybil Macintosh Phillips Sr. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Anne S. Phillips; one son, David Navas of Chattanooga; one brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Sally Phillips of Fayetteville, Tenn.; and nieces and nephew, Allison, Jean and Ronnie Phillips. Funeral services were conducted 8 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home of Etowah, with Reverend Shaun King and Reverend John E. "Jack" Pennington officiating. Rose, 72, passed away Oct. 2, 2004. He was born and raised in McClure, Va. He moved to Hampton in 1954 and began teaching chemistry at Hampton High School. He became supervisor of science for Hampton City Schools in 1961 and held that position until his retirement in 1991. He was a dedicated teacher/supervisor and loved to teach. He was also an avid harmonica player. He was a member of the First Methodist Church in Hampton. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clinton and Della Rose of Marion, Va. Roger Wayne Walls TOPEKA, Kan. – Roger Wayne Walls, 59, formerly of Lebanon, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004. A U.S. Army veteran, he was a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a son of the late Bascom and Ruth Walls, and was preceded in death by a brother, Norman Walls. Survivors include a daughter, Robin Thompson, Geneva, Ohio; a son, Wayne Walls, Topeka; two grandchildren, Geneva, Ohio; five brothers, Bill Walls, Manassas, Va., Buford Walls, Luray, Va., Jack Walls, Lebanon, Kenneth Walls, Linden, Va., and Anthony Walls, Miami; and a sister, Wanda Cheryl Payne, Catlette, Va. Sophia Weaver Mrs. Sophia "Billie" Weaver, age 78, formerly of 505 Magnolia Ave., went to be with the Lord Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at the home of her daughter, 1711 Mt. Holston Road, in Bluff City, where she was currently living. She is survived by two sons, Ron Weaver and wife Amy, Johnson City and Charlie Weaver and wife Trish, Kingsport; one daughter, Debbie Leonard and husband Tommy, Bluff City; one sister, Florence Keene, Brandon, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Lesley Cole Leonard, Matthew, Aubrey, Jon, Elizabeth, Alex and Lindsay Weaver and Amber Gilbert and husband Mike; two great-grandchildren, Kaleb and Kloe Gilbert; and several nieces and nephews. Watauga Ave., is serving the Weaver family. Kenneth W. Wilson BLOUNTVILLE – Kenneth W. Wilson, 79, passed away Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at Wellmont Hospice House. He was born in Scott County, Va., a son of the late William Davis and Beulah Blanche Jones Wilson, and had lived most of his life in Sullivan County. He worked at Burlington Mills for 35 years, for Sullivan County Highway Department for 12 years, and was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Mamie Groves, Daisy Rodefer, Lucille Thomas and Hazel Taylor, and his brothers, Ralph "Pud" Wilson and C.R. Wilson, and two infant brothers. Survivors include his wife, Ann Taylor Wilson; a special brother-in-law, Stanley Taylor; special friends, Gladys Carico and Frank Tilden; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:45 Wednesday evening, Oct. 6, 2004, at Oakley-Cook Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 8 o’clock in the Paul Cook Memorial Chapel of Oakley-Cook Funeral Home, with Elder Kenny Hammond and Elder Johnny Bowlin officiating.
