Carter II HARMAN, Va. – Fredrick G. Carter II, 63 years of age, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, at his home from an apparent heart attack. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Fredrick G. (Pete) and Edythe Tolbert Carter. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of Harman Memorial Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Grundy High School, a member of Sandy Valley Lodge No. 17 AF&AM of Grundy, a member of Abate of Virginia Bikers Association and a member of John Ratliff Post No. 164 of the American Legion. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict, was a retired employee of Harman Mining Company and a member of United Mine Workers of America Local Union No. 7025. Mr. Carter was preceded in death by his first wife, Jerrette Kay Sowers Carter, Jan. 14, 1998, and by one daughter, Traci Carter. He is survived by his wife, Patrice Elswick Carter, Harman; one daughter, Melinda Carter, Trinity, Fla.; one sister, Barbara C. Hall, Roanoke; and one brother, Mike Carter, Chattanooga. Also, he is survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Fredrick G. Carter II will be conducted Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at 1 p.m. at Harman Memorial Baptist Church, Harman, with Minister Willard Owens officiating, with entombment to follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va. Friends may call at Harman Memorial Baptist Church, Harman, Friday at 5 p.m., with Masonic rites at 7:30 p.m., followed by a song service. He was born in Abingdon on June 10, 1949, to the late James and Bruxie Inscore. He was employed by the U.S. Department of Commerce, supervisor, Virginia Inspection Office National Marine Fisheries Service in Hampton, Va., for 30 years. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Ted traveled extensively and lived many places due to his job, and he always made friends quickly. He loved his family and was so caring to everyone he met. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Wanda Goodloe, and five baby brothers. Survivors include his brothers and sisters, Nora Venable (Bill) of Bristol, Roger Inscore (Doris) of Bristol, Louella Wolfe of Bristol, Charlie Inscore (Cathy) of Kingsport, Dixie Chapman (Thurman) of Bristol, Jimmy Inscore (Janice) of Knoxville and Judy Rowlette (Gary) of Bristol; and special friends, Bob and Wanda Golladay, David Jones and the caring ladies of his neighborhood. Vivian Killinger MARION – Vivian Margarite Pires Killinger died peacefully at home on Monday, Oct. 4, 2004. Born on Oct. 25, 1904, in Jacksonville, Ill., to John and Ella Pires, she graduated from MacMurray College, with a B.S. in biology and received a master’s of science degree in botany from the University of Illinois. Her master’s thesis, "The Diseases of the Pecan Tree," was part of Texas A&M’s graduate agricultural program for many years. Mrs. Killinger came to Marion to teach at Marion College after completing graduate school. She met Ralph Kelly Killinger in 1928, married in 1930, and celebrated 25 years of marriage until his death in 1956. An accomplished professor and artist, she was active in the American Association of University Women, Marion Book Club, Marion Garden Club, Marion Bridge Club and numerous charitable endeavors. A member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church for 74 years, she was instrumental, along with her husband, in the building of the current church on West Main Street and was very active in many areas of her church life. "Baboo" was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, auntie and friend whose spirit and joyful memories remain in our hearts. Her family is especially grateful for the dedication and love given to her for many years by her devoted caretakers, Mildred Harris, Jean Talbert, Barbara Call and Beverly Evans. Mrs. Killinger was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ella Pires, her sisters, Elson Pires and Thelma Kiderlen, and her beloved husband, Ralph. She is survived by a daughter, Mary Ellen Durham of Dallas; four grandchildren, Heather Durham and husband Salvador Gonzalez de la Cruz of Madrid, Spain, and Colin Durham and wife Amara of Dallas; four great-grandchildren, Jackson and Zoe Durham of Dallas and Luis and Federico Gonzalez Durham of Madrid; and 10 nieces and nephews. Lambert, age 75, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, in the Russell County Medical Center. Born March 3, 1929, a son of the late Arnold Lambert and the late Gracie Arrington Lambert, he had lived most of his life in Russell County. A graduate of Cleveland High School, he was a retired employee of American Electric Power, Clinch River Plant. He was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church, was president of Cleveland Senior Citizens and a member of the American Electric Power retirees. He enjoyed playing old time bluegrass music and recently was honored by the Cleveland Development Association for his 52-year contribution to music. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Andrea Leigh Senter; three brothers, Ernest Lambert, Virgil Lambert and Ray Lambert; and a sister, Olive Quesenberry. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Ruth Colley Lambert; two daughters, Linda and husband Tom Senter, Lebanon, and Pam and husband Roger Thompson, Cleveland, Va.; grandchildren, Thomas Senter, Leanne Senter and Lindsay Thompson; one sister, Ester Owens, Madison Heights, Mich.; one brother, Stallard Lambert and wife Jean, Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews. McCrary EMORY, Va. – Martha Buchanan Blakemore "Marty" McCrary, 80, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at her home. She was the daughter of the late John Augustus Blakemore and Mary Lou Bell Blakemore. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Frances Allison McCrary. She was a graduate of Emory & Henry College. She was an antique dealer in Baltimore and Emory, former teacher and board member of the First Virginia Bank, active in the Highlands Festival and member of the Glade Spring Presbyterian Church at Old Glade.
