Born Feb. 10, 1921, in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late John Ross and Alice Mae Smith Childress. She was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert C. Ashbrook, four brothers, Percy, Clarence, Thurman and Andrew Childress, and one grandson, Keith Ashbrook. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, worked for the U.S. Postal Service and was a real estate broker in Johnson City. She was born in Richlands on March 22, 1973, and was the daughter of Thurman Cooper of Baptist Valley, Va., and Diane Alford Cooper of Tazewell. She was a 1998 graduate of the University of Virginia and was a volunteer with the UVa Hospital Cancer Center and the American Cancer Society. Dixon, age 79, of 104 Hunter’s Trail W., died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon. She was preceded in death in September 2003 by her husband of 57 years, Melvin T. Dixon, and earlier by her mother and stepfather, Elsie and Buster Brickhouse, also of Elizabeth City. Mrs. Dixon is survived by her daughter Diana D. Hardison and her son-in-law Edwin T. Hardison of Abingdon; by one sister, Christine Elsen of Steele, Ala.; by two brothers, Curtis Brickhouse and Lyman Brickhouse, both of Elizabeth City; by the siblings’ spouses, Lud Elsen, Donna Brickhouse and Darlene Brickhouse; by a number of cousins; a niece; two nephews; by extended family and friends and by her beloved pet Sheltie, Dee Dee. Born Aug. 22, 1925, in Fort Landing, N.C., Mrs. Dixon moved to Elizabeth City as an adolescent and became a lifelong resident. She married Melvin T. Dixon after his return from service in the Army in the European Theatre, on April 29, 1946. Mrs. Dixon held a variety of positions before World War II, including telephone operator. Completing training at Hicks Academy in Norfolk, she became a professional hairdresser after the war and continued for more than 25 years, half of that time as proprietor of her own shop. She enjoyed a devoted and loyal clientele, retaining personal friendships with her customers long after her retirement. Until declining health intervened, Doris was a faithful member of City Road United Methodist Church in Elizabeth City. She enjoyed sewing and flower gardening. During the last months of her life, she was in Knoxville and Abingdon, in the care of her daughter Diana and son-in-law Edwin. A graveside service will be conducted on Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, at 11 a.m. in Old Hollywood Cemetery, with Rev. Charles McKenzie officiating. Mr. Osborne was a Russell County, Va., native and had lived most of his life in Washington County, Tenn. He was a son of the late George Washington Osborne and Clemie Tine Casey Osborne, and was also preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Virginia Osborne, and a favorite son-in-law, J.R. Shell. Mr. Osborne was retired from Harris Tarkett. He was a Baptist. Mr. Charles "Hobert" White, age 60, passed away Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, in a Richlands hospital, following a lengthy illness. Phyllis Wright BIG ROCK, Va. – Phyllis Ann Perry Wright, 64 years of age, passed away Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of Ruth Hatfield Perry Rife, Big Rock and the late Toney Perry. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a member of the Big Rock Church of Christ and was a graduate of Grundy High School. She was a retired employee of Deskins Super Market, where she had served as store manager. Mrs. Wright was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Wright, March 1976. She was also preceded in death by one infant son, Joel Wright, one daughter, Martha Hope Wright, and one sister, Wilma Jean Billiter on Sept. 25, 1982. She is survived by her mother, Ruth Hatfield Perry Rife of Big Rock; one sister, Geraldine Sampson of White Lake, Mich.; three nephews, Mark Billiter, Phillip Billiter and Brian Sampson; three nieces, Vernetta Nunnery, Versita Dailey and Beth Faulkner. Funeral services for Phyllis Ann Perry Wright will be conducted Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel, with Evangelists Rusty Owens, Sam Casebolt, Jim Hill and Bob Miller officiating, with burial to follow in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock. Friends may call at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel after 5 p.m. Monday and there will services Monday evening at 7. Active pallbearers will be Gary Jude and family and friends.
