Christian, age 76, of 516 Old Union Road, passed away Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, at the Indian Path Hospital & Medical Center, following an extended illness. Mr. Christian was a lifelong resident of Hawkins County and was a member of the Elm Springs United Methodist Church. He retired from the Penn-Dixie Cement Company and worked for the City of Church Hill for several years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. J.D. and Cora Carter Christian, five brothers, Bob, Buck, Ben, J.W., Charles and Johnny Christian, and one sister, Denean DeWald. William Lee Coalson BRISTOL, Va. – William Lee "Bill" Coalson, age 74, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, in Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol Tennessee. He was a native of Smyth County, Va., and had resided in Bristol Virginia since 1977. He was a graduate of Marion High School, attended RPI of the College of William and Mary and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Coalson was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Europe from 1948-1954, with the United States Constabulary-Border Squadron and Army Counter Intelligence Corp. A past president of Marion Civitan Club, and a past lieutenant governor of Appalachian District, Civitan International. He was also a member of Francis Marion VFW Post 4667, Army CIC veterans, U.S. Constabulary Association, a former treasurer of Marion and retired from Reynolds Metals Co. Mr. Coalson was preceded in death by his parents, M.M. and Rachel V. Morris Coalson, a brother, Harry Coalson, and a sister, Shirley Fay Coalson. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Eleanor Harris Coalson of Bristol Virginia; one daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia D. and Joe Thompson of Bristol Virginia; one son, Steve C. Coalson of McKinney, Texas; two very special granddaughters, Kaitlyn V. and Kinley H. Coalson, both of McKinney; six sisters, Ann Anderson of Wytheville, Marilyn G. Edith Wells Dyson MARION – Edith Wells Dyson, age 90, left this earth on Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, to be with her Lord. She was the daughter of the late Walter and Louella McNabb Wells, and was born in Loudon, Tenn., on Oct. 22, 1913. She moved to Marion in 1941 as a young wife and mother, where they raised six children. She was employed by the Hosiery Mill and Buster Brown. She was very active in the Marion Church of the Nazarene and will be remembered for the wonderful cakes she made. Mrs. Dyson was preceded in death by her husband, Clint, and a son, Eddie. She is survived by four daughters and one son-in-law, Frances and Al Ferguson and Debbie Dyson, all of Marion, Faye Chapman of Uniontown, Ohio, and Peggy Stuttaford of Sacramento, Calif.; one son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Betty Dyson of Marion; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Beulah Estep HAZARD, Ky. – Beulah Estep was born in Hazard on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 1913, and departed this walk of life on Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap, Va., at the age of 90. She was preceded in death by her husband, Starling R. Estep, a son and daughter- in-law, Jack D. and wife Naomi Estep, two daughters, Melinda Sue Fannon and Rheda Faye Estep, parents, Elbert F. Duncan Sr. and Allie Duncan, one brother, E. Frank Duncan Jr., and one sister, Vera Golden Duncan. She was a homemaker, lived most of her life in Lee County and was a member of the Sigma Freewill Baptist Church, Keokee, Va. Beulah is survived by two sons, Dean Estep of Keokee and Robert L. (Bob) Estep Sr. and wife Dolores of Bossier City, La.; one sister, Lois Carter of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; and one brother, James (Merriel) Duncan of Bristol Virginia. Beulah is also survived by five grandsons; four granddaughters; 16 great- grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and a lot of friends. Beatrice Combs Jones Beatrice Combs Jones, 90, formerly of 1418 Oakland Ave., Johnson City, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, at Life Care Center, Elizabethton, following an extended illness. A native of Sullivan County, she was the daughter of the late Elbert and Bertie Richards Combs. She was a member of Downtown Christian Church, Johnson City, She was preceded in death by four brothers, Raymond Combs, Berson Combs, Earl Combs and Roby Combs, and three sisters, Hassie Moore, Ressie Moss and Angie Hall. Before moving to Bristol in the early 70’s, she lived in Ashtabula, Ohio. She worked at Morrison Fiber Glass in Ashtabula and was of the Baptist faith. She is the widow of Dana C. Newberry. She is survived by sons, Jerry Newberry and Gary Newberry and wife Barbara; grandchildren, Shane, Larry, Lisa, Angel and Kren; sisters, Ruby Rappe, Shirley Tessier and Effie Wimmer; several nieces and nephews; and stepdaughters, Helen Short and Jean Dirgees. Douglas Rutherford BIG STONE GAP – Douglas Glenn Rutherford, 47, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at his residence, after a long illness. He lived most of his life in Big Stone Gap, where he formerly worked for Westmoreland Coal Company. He was a self-employed contractor. Mrs. Trivett was of Baptist faith. She is survived by three nieces, Carolyn Pruitt and her husband Clarence, Connie McCrady and her husband Jack and Shelby Blevins, all of Damascus; nephew, Fred Forrester, of Bristol Tennessee; and special friends, Sue Spillers, Hazel Holloway, Pauline Trent, Doris Jean Hash, Daisy Thomas and Elizabeth Stevens. Clara Cox Vencill went to be with our Lord and all her loved ones gone before her on Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004. Her passing was at home after a long courageous battle with cancer. Owens Funeral Service, Lebanon, is in charge of arrangements. Juanita C. Woods BRISTOL, Tenn. – Juanita Carrie Sparger Woods, passed away Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, in the Wellmont Hospice House. Mrs. Woods was born on Oct. 31, 1909, in Bristol Tennessee, to the late Charles Fulton and Ella May Cross Sparger. She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and was a graduate from Tennessee High School and from the Bristol Business College. She was retired from United Inter-Mountain Telephone Company, with over 30 years of service. She was also one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Mrs. Woods was very artistic, and enjoyed sewing, especially making Raggedy Ann dolls. Her special personality made her loved by all. Mrs. Woods was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Woods, her brothers, Herman Sparger, William Sparger and Fred Sparger. Mrs. Woods is survived by one daughter, Carol Robinson and husband Doug, of Bristol Tennessee; three grandchildren, April Robinson, of Kingsport, Esther Lodico and husband Shawn, of Bristol Tennessee, and Jason Robinson, of Bristol Tennessee; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, at 2 p.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel, with Doug Robinson officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 1 until 2 p.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home.
