Harry Eddy DAMASCUS – Harry Eddy, age 74, passed away Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at his residence. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Va., and was the son of the late John and Mary Conley Eddy. Harry worked for Burlington Industries for 25 years, until it closed, and he went to work for the Virginia Department of Rehabilitation and was a courier for Purolator Courier Corporation. He later become the owner and operator of the Town and Country Hardware, with his wife, Betty, in Damascus and in his later years worked as a courier for the Damascus Bank and catered for In The Country in Damascus. Harry was a member of the Damascus United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by three brothers, Daniel Eddy, John Eddy and Millard Eddy; one sister, Mildred Eddy Counts; and two brothers-in-law, Bufford Stafford and Leslie Counts. McCool ABINGDON – Kathryn Louise McCool, 53, well-known educator in the Washington County Public School System, passed away on Oct. 21, 2004, after a long battle with cancer. Kathy, as she was known by all, is survived by her loving husband of 28 years, Gary, and her children, Erin and Michael, all of Abingdon. Other survivors include her mother, Margaret Spaniol; sister, Janie Johnson; special aunt, Mary Jane Harris; and special uncle, George Brunskill, all of Pontiac, Ill.; her brother, John Spaniol of Carbondale, Ill.; and 19 nieces and nephews. Mrs. McCool was preceded in death by her father, John Spaniol, her brother, Bill Spaniol, and her sister, Jeanne Mansour. A dynamic teacher, who was respected by her students, Kathy maintained a busy and full life, balancing family, community, teaching and her love of everything Spanish. An honors graduate of Pontiac High School in 1969, Kathy continued her studies by earning her degree at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale in 1973. She continued a lifetime of enriching her mind and expanding her teaching skills through graduate studies at the University of Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and the CIDOC Spanish Institute in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Kathy began her 30-year teaching career at Chatsworth High School in Chatsworth, Ill., later moving to Virginia in 1978. She had taught in Washington County since then at both Holston and Abingdon high schools. She had also served as an adjunct professor at both Virginia Highlands Community College and King College. She was well-known in the community for sponsoring student trips to Europe and had worked with Emory&Henry College for many years, mentoring and training future Spanish teachers. She had served on state textbook committees and had been president of FLAVA (Foreign Language Association of America). Active in community and church work, Kathy had been a member of Christ the King Catholic Church since moving to Abingdon and had been a past president of the church Parish Council. She had worked tirelessly throughout the years organizing Spanish masses and English tutoring sessions for migrant workers. Kathy had worked with both the Town of Abingdon and Washington County Sheriff’s office as an interpreter for Spanish-speaking people who needed assistance. Many in the Spanish-speaking community in the area looked at Kathy as a friend, guide and a connection to the community at large. Kathy took the most pride in her role as a wife, mother and friend to those closest to her. Dependable to a fault, Kathy could always be counted on for any and every thing. She will be surely missed by all who were blessed to have known her. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, at 9 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, 820 East Main St., in Kathy’s honor. The family will receive friends beginning at 2 p.m. at the church, where a memorial service celebrating Kathy’s life will be held at 6 p.m. A wake (reception) will follow the memorial service in the Parish Hall. Russell, and two brothers, Ernest and Robert Rouse. Mr. Rouse worked as a logger and was the former postmaster in Marion, with over 15 years of service with the U.S. Postal Service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in World War II and a member of the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667. He graduated from Emory&Henry College in 1952, with a bachelor’s degree in English and history, and later received his master’s degree from East Tennessee State University. He was an accomplished realtor, having owned and operated Rouse Realty. Mr. Rouse loved to travel, loved politics and was a past chairman of the Smyth County Democratic Party. He was a member of the Middle Fork Baptist Church for over 50 years and taught Sunday School. Survivors include wife, Marie Martin Rouse; four daughters, Jeanie Russell, Chilhowie, Doris Blevins and husband Mike, Seven Mile Ford, Nancy Palmer and husband George, Seven Mile Ford, and Emily Draper and husband Mark, Bristol; special brother-in-law, L. Baker Martin and wife Carolyn, Charlotte; three brothers, Leon Rouse and wife Anita, Marion, Freddie Rouse and wife Shelia, Seven Mile Ford and Ellis Rouse and wife Sandie, Seven Mile Ford; two sisters, Oralee Snavely and husband Roy, Wytheville and Edith Wymer and husband Charles, Marion; 12 grandchildren, Willie Russell, Joey Russell, James Rambo, Heather Pruitt, Amy Wall, Valerie Warner, Melanie Rambo, Christie Rambo, Nehemiah Draper, Casey Palmer, Derrick Blevins and Rachel Draper; 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Interment will follow in the Middlefork Cemetery, with full military honors being rendered by the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667. Ella Watson ATKINS, Va. – Ella Watson, age 82, passed away Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, in the Smyth County Community Hospital. Mrs. Watson was born in New Jersey to the late Howard and Ella Mae Golley Githens. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter S. Watson Sr., and her children, Walter S. Watson Jr., Janet May Rech, Wallace Watson and Wade Watson. Mrs. Watson was a member of The Ladies Auxiliary of the Kettle Run Volunteer Fire Department in New Jersey. Bradley’s Funeral Home, Marion, is serving the family of Mrs. Watson. Henry Lee Wise RUSSELL COUNTY, Va. – Henry (Hen) Lee Wise, 72, of the Big Moccasin section, passed away on Friday, Oct. 22, 2004. He was born in Scott County, Va., on Feb. 9, 1932, to the late Frank and Margaret Fortner Wise. He was a lifelong resident of Russell County and was an avid farmer in the Big Moccasin area. He was a member of the Stuart Masonic Lodge 224 and enjoyed spending time with his friends at the Family Bluegrass Barn. In addition to his parents, four brothers and one sister also preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Pat Wise; his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Bruce Dotson of Kingsport; brothers, Dan Wise and Bobby Wise; and sisters, Venus Davis and Nell Dale, all of Lebanon, and Anna Ruth Stansil of Rossville, Ga. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews, three stepgrandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Trigg Fields, Carter McGlothlin, Carlos Garrett, George Frence, Jeff Duty and Dewey Bennett.
