A graduate of New Hartford Central School, New Hartford, N.Y., and Utica School of Commerce, she was executive director of Overseas Friendship Center and Multiple Sclerosis Society, executive secretary to Congressman Alexander Pirnie and Congressman Donald Mitchell and administrative assistant to Mayor Edward Hanna. Upon moving to the Bristol area in 1976, she served as a commissioner with Blountville Utility District and was a member of Avoca Christian Church. She made her home in the Richlands area most of her life and was a member of the Richlands Tabernacle. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Bessie White, Lola Saddler and Flora Carriger, also, one brother, Jackie Donald Honaker. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survivors are her husband, Mr. Richard K. Born July 8, 1921, in Russell County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Green and Mae Plaster Ball. She was a member of the Trinity Tabernacle Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mervin Shortt; one son, Jerry Shortt; three brothers, Bert Ball, Newton Ball and Ralph Ball. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family in her generation. She is survived by two daughters, Iris Webb and husband Darrell (Bobby) of Raven and Mary Shook and husband Rick of Hickory, N.C.; seven sons, Steven (Sandy) Brewer and wife Vista of Martinsville, Joe Shortt and wife Norma, Dennis Shortt and Jack Shortt, all of Raven, James Shortt, Eric Shortt and wife Donna, all of Richlands, and Richard Shortt of the home; 24 grandchildren, 36 great- grandchildren and a host of friends and neighbors also survive. Born in Vallscreek, W.Va., he was the son of the late Arthur and Kizzie Earls Stevenson. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a retired coal miner and operator and was a member of UMWA Local 6633. Thomas BRISTOL, Tenn. – Mrs. Barbara Jean Booher Thomas, age 61, of 1012 Kentucky Ave., passed away on Oct. 26, 2004, at the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. Barbara was born on Dec. 13, 1942, to the late Luster and Irene Morelock Booher. A native of Bristol, Mrs. Thomas was a homemaker and attended Norfolk Avenue Baptist Church. Hugh A. White BRISTOL, Tenn. – Hugh A. White, 78, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, at Wellmont Hospice House. He was born Dec. 2, 1925, in Greendale, Va., a son of the late Stuart and Dixie Holmes White, and was a graduate of Greendale High School. After graduation, he entered the U.S. Army in February 1944 and served in the anti-tank regiment in France and Germany during World War II. He was honorably discharged in May 1946. He attended National School of Photography in Washington, D.C., in 1946 and 1947. He was employed with Bristol Art Engravers as a photo engraver. In 1958, he joined the Sperry Company (Unisys) as an industrial photographer and worked there until his retirement in 1981. He was a member of Windsor Avenue Presbyterian Church, Kettlefoot Road and Gun Club and the VFW. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Lou Webb White; a sister, Loraine Hale and her husband Bert of Bluff City; a nephew, Kenneth Hale of Bristol Tennessee; and an uncle, Ernest Holmes and his wife Jerri of Thomasville, N.C. Ed E. Williams III UNICOI, Tenn. – Ed E. Williams III, age 56, 1002 Fox Hound Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, at his residence, following a lengthy battle with cancer. Mr. Williams was born in Rocky Mount, N.C., to the late Eddie E. Williams Jr. and Eula Garland Williams. Mr. Williams, graduate of Wofford College and the Vanderbilt University School of Law, was a retired judge and conservationist. Mr. Williams worked as an attorney at numerous area law firms and acted as general counsel of United Glass Corporation. He served as the youngest circuit- court judge in Tennessee. He dedicated himself to both political and conservation projects. He was a member of the C.P.R. Institute for Dispute Resolution, chair of the Tennessee Forestry Commission, the Board of Trustees and the Executive Committee of the National Park Foundation, founder and vice chair of the Partners of the Cherokee National Forest, founder and chair of Open Spaces Conservancy, Board of Professional Responsibility of the Supreme Court, volunteer of the Nature Conservancy, Conservation Fund and the Trust for Public Land. Survivors include two sons, Jackson H. Williams, Springfield, Mass., and James B. Williams, West Lafayette, Ind.; two sisters, Beth Williams Dail, Swansboro, N.C., and Ellen Williams Rak, Huntersville, N.C.; and two nieces, Carrie and Meredith Dial, Swansboro. The memorial service for Mr. Williams will be conducted Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at 1 p.m. in the East Chapel of the Appalachian Funeral Home, with Doug Tweed officiating.
