Cook Addison, age 93, passed away Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at her home. Buchanan Funeral Service at Keen Mountain, Va., is serving the Addison family. H.B. Arrington BRISTOL, Tenn. – Haskel "H.B." Arrington, 91, passed away Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born Sept. 16, 1913, on a farm in Cannady, Buchanan County, Va., a son of the late Newborn H. and Sarah Duty Arrington. He attended a one-room school and, upon graduation from Paw Paw Elementary School, stayed on the farm for two years, helping his father farm and buy and sell cattle. He was on his father’s checking account when he was 12 years old, and he could buy a cow, pay for it and drive the cow home. When he got 25 to 30 cattle, he and his father, with the help of two dogs, would drive the cattle to Carbo, a distance of 22 miles, where the cattle were weighed, loaded on a coal car and sold. He then entered Haysi High School, staying one year with his brother, the late William Arrington, one year walking and riding a horse eight miles, and two years with Dr. and Mrs. Doc Sutherland. After accompanying Mr. Akers (A.M.) West, the agriculture teacher, to Blacksburg on a livestock judging team for three summers, Mr. Arrington won the judging team contest. He attended V.P.I. on an agriculture scholarship. He planned to be a school teacher, but upon his return to Haysi, he was offered a job with Cumberland Bank and Trust Company in Clintwood. He married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Sutherland, in 1937, and lost her in 1938. He entered the U.S. Army in 1940, trained recruits in Georgia, and in 1942, joined the Counter Intelligence Corps. Upon being honourably discharged in 1946, he returned to banking. He served the bank as president and chief executive officer until his retirement in 1978, and then moved to Bristol. In 1980, he organized Dickenson-Buchanan Bank for the people of Dickenson County and Buchanan County, which he sold in 1990. In addition to serving on the boards of Cumberland and Dickenson-Buchanan County Banks, he served on the board of Dominion Bankshares. He was also president and owner of Haysi Insurance Agency, Haysi Coal Docks and C.&A. Coal Company. He had 25 years perfect attendance in the Haysi Kiwanis Club, served one year as Kiwanis lieutenant governor, and was presented a life membership in Kiwanis International in 1977. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner for over 70 years, served 15 years as a member of and was chairman of the Dickenson County School Board, 20 years as a member of the board of Breaks Interstate Park and was on the boards of Bristol University and the University of Virginia at Wise. He was the recipient of an honorary doctorate degree in commercial science and was a Kentucky Colonel. He was a member of Anderson Street United Methodist Church in Bristol. His wife of 51 years, Julia C. Arrington, passed away in 1999. Mr. Arrington is survived by four daughters, Sue Arrington of Abingdon, Martha Farmer and her husband Jack of Bristol Virginia, Elizabeth Arrington and her husband Wayne Fowler of Douglasville, Ga., and Patricia (Teresa) Bacon and her husband Randy of Jonesborough; a special grandson, David M. Arrington, and grandsons, Scott Farmer and Bradley and Brandon Bacon; and a great- granddaughter, Sarah Farmer. The family will receive friends from 2 until 4 o’clock Wednesday afternoon and from 6 until 9 o’clock Wednesday evening at Oakley-Cook Funeral Home. The funeral service will be conducted at 1 o’clock Thursday in the Paul Cook Memorial Chapel of Oakley-Cook Funeral Home, with Rev. Richard Hayes, Rev. Lester MacKinnon and Rev. David Harr officiating. The eulogy will be delivered by Elizabeth Arrington and Masonic Memorial Rites will be conducted by Shelby Lodge 162, as a courtesy to Clintwood Lodge 66. The committal service and interment will follow in Temple Hill Memorial Park, with Elder Bob Arrington officiating. Military graveside rites will be presented by the Highlands Fellowship Honor Guard. Lillian was born on Sept. 19, 1921, in Bristol Virginia. She lived in the Bristol area all her life, where she retired from her job at the Old Dominon Box Factory. Along with her family, Lillian attended church for many years at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Bristol Tennessee. She was preceded in death by her husband, Worley Willard Cannon. He was the son of the late George and Byerc Smith Cox, and was a native of Bristol. He was retired from Ford Motor Company in Plymouth, Mich. He was a member of the Royal Arch Masons of Belleville, Mich. He was also a life member of the American Disabled Veterans and a Moose Club member since 1972. He served in the U.S. Army from 1950-1951, and in the U.S. Navy from 1951-1957. Survivors include wife, Shirley Cox of the home; son, Daniel A. Cox II; daughters, Donna (Arthur) Jordan, Byerc Smith and Beth (Scott) Powers, all of Michigan, and Patricia Wright of Bristol Tennessee; and stepdaughters, Leisa Petraska of Michigan and Kimberly Ruby of Augusta, Ga. Genevieve S. Cross BRISTOL, Tenn. – O. Genevieve Slagle Cross, age 86, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, in Bristol Nursing Home. She was the daughter of the late Milburn Hunter and Pearl Richards Slagle. She was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County. During World War II, she worked in Oak Ridge in research for the atomic bomb. After the war, she worked in accounting at Akard Funeral Home, but spent most of her professional life as the founder and manager of the Bristol office of the East Tennessee Automobile Club, a division of the American Automobile Association. She was also involved in numerous civic activities and was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Bristol Virginia. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Brainard C. Cross; and sons, Dennis W. Cross and wife, Susan, and their children, Walker, Grier and Sydney of Lexington, Va., and David L. Cross and wife, Kathy, and their son, Hunter, of Nashville. He was a lifelong resident of Dickenson County, born Sept. 30, 1920, at Wilder, Va. He was the son of the late Oscar "O.O." and Augusta Maine Garrett. Mr. Garrett was a wonderful father, grandfather and friend. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Pacific during World War II. He was an active businessman in the community in which he helped start one of the first television cable businesses in this area. He also was part-owner of the coin laundry of Clintwood until 2002. He was a retired coal miner with the Betty B. Coal Company, retiring in 1986. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Virginia Mae Garrett; brothers, Maynard Garrett, Lewis "Tootie" Garrett, Jessie Garrett and Freddy Garrett; one sister, Margaret Garrett Ledgerwoood; and sister-in-law, Jean Garrett. Bobby E. Worley BRISTOL, Va. – Bobby Eugene Worley, age 52, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a native of Bristol Virginia and was a retired truck driver. He was preceded in death by his father, Oliver Worley; a brother, Robert Arnold Worley; a nephew, Michael Wise; and a loving cousin and friend, Roy Worley. Survivors include wife, Judy Cross Worley; children, Monica Worley of Bristol Virginia and Mark Worley of Bristol Virginia; mother, Nevada Worley; granddaughter, Alyssa Quinn Rose of Bristol Virginia; siblings, Susie Wise and husband Raymond of Bristol Virginia, James Worley and wife Carolyn of Bristol Virginia, Maxine Worley of Bristol Virginia, Gary Worley and wife Nancy of Bristol Virginia and Merita Lunsford and husband Norris; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at 6 p.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Walter Statzer officiating, assisted by Rev. Roger Ball. Committal services will be held on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
