Bonnie Lou Byrd STALEY, N.C. – Mrs. Bonnie Lou Byrd, age 56, formerly of Buchanan County, Va., passed away Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, following a brief illness. Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late William Howard Murdock and Stella Octavia Vandyke Murdock. She was a member of the Church of God. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Mable Hampton and Opal Dolman. Mrs. Byrd is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Doris Shoffner of Asheboro, N.C., and Crystal Cheek of Staley; three stepchildren, Carolyn Byrd of Sevierville, Tenn., Jenny Sisk of Raven, Va., and Greg Byrd of Johnson City; one sister, Joyce Street of Mavisdale, Va.; one brother, William H. Murdock of Mount Vernon, Ohio; eight grandchildren; one special niece, Lora Kennedy; and two special nephews, Greg Street and Red Street also survive. Filipek, 80, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, following a brief illness. Born March 22, 1924, in Raleigh, W.Va., he was the son of the late Anton Filipek and Nellie Anelia Byk Filipek. On Nov. 11, 1950, he was united in marriage to Nellie Jacobowski. Mr. Filipek (Joe) graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and attended Beckley College. He was an Eagle Scout. In 1943, he entered the U.S. Army Infantry and served in the North Africa and Italian Campaigns. He was wounded in battle and received the Bronze Star. He had over 40 years experience in the mining industry and was a retired federal mine inspector. Joe was an accomplished carpenter and gardener. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, golfing and four-wheeling. He was an active member of the Victory Pentecostal Church in Lindside, W.Va. Survivors include his wife, Nellie Filipek; two sons, Joseph J. Filipek Jr. of Alexandria and Michael A. Filipek and his wife Kristal of Bluefield, W.Va.; two daughters, Rosanna Duncan and her husband Lawrence of Bluefield, Va., and Rebecca Smith and her husband William of Bristol Tennessee; one granddaughter, Kimberly Smith; seven sisters, Mary Peelish, Stella Novak, Lilly Janice, Blanche Champer, Rosie Bozo and Stephanie Steele; and four brothers, Walter Filipek, Edward Filipek, Theodore Filipek and Andrew Filipek. Euna Keith BRISTOL, Va. – Euna Richardson Vernon Keith, age 90, a resident of NHC, passed away Friday, Nov. 12, 2004, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Mrs Keith was born Nov. 29, 1913, in Elizabethton, Tenn., a daughter of the late Allen C. and Margaret Lunsford Richardson. She grew up on a farm in the Chinquapin community and had made her home in the Bristol area all of her life. Mrs. Keith was a retired housekeeper at State Street United Methodist Church and was of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Keith was the widow of Clarence Keith and was preceded in death by her two children, Margaret Hartley and Ben Allen Vernon. He had lived all his life in the Bristol area, was a data system engineer and a member of the First Freewill Baptist Church. Martin Callie Hicks Cullop Martin, 93, formerly of 30 Carlson Ave., died Friday, Nov. 12, 2004, in Riverside Health Care Center. Born Sept. 17, 1911, in Sullivan County, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late George Washington Hicks and Nellie Weaver Hicks. Mrs. Martin moved to Danville in 1934 from Bristol Tennessee. She married James Alvin Cullop on Dec. 24, 1934. She retired from Dan River Mills inspection room at age 63, with more than 30 years service. She was a member of Schoolfield United Methodist Church for over 60 years, where she was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary. She had been in declining health for four years and was in the nursing home for the past 20 months. She was preceded in death by her first husband, James Alvin Cullop, who died in 1973; her second husband, Charlie J. Martin, who died in 1995; four sisters, Bertha Childress, Grace Grubb, Mary Virginia Leonard and Leddie Ruth Hicks; and two brothers, Wiley and Henry Hicks. Surviving are a daughter, Betty Cullop Morris, Danville; sister, Dorothy Hickman, Bristol Tennessee; granddaughter and her husband, Tina Morris Angel and David Angel, Titusville, Fla.; great-grandchild, James Clay Angel, Titusville; and stepdaughter, Faye Wells and husband, Jack, Danville; three stepgrandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren. His parents were the late Henry and Flora Edwards Owens of Dickenson County. His wife of 62 years was the late Ona "Mommaw" Owens, who passed away March 16, 2001. A son, Kenneth Ray Owens, also preceded him in death. Edgar Rife CLAYPOOL HILL, Va. – Mrs. Edgar Mae Bucklen Rife, age 94, formerly of Buchanan County, Va., went home to be with the Lord on Nov. 13, 2004, after a long and productive life. She was born on Oct. 10, 1910, in Buchanan County, and was the daughter of the late J.C. (Cruise) and Wadie Ratliff Bucklen. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Boyd Rife; two sons, Estel Rife and Homer Rife; one infant daughter, Leona Fern Rife; two brothers, Kermit Bucklen and Dillard Bucklen; and one sister Viola Horn. Edgar’s passion in life was serving God. She taught Sunday School at the Antioch Church at Keen Mountain and coordinated the building project for the new church at Antioch. She also started Sunday School classes at the Bethany Methodist Church at Pilgrims Knob and taught Sunday School for many years at Little Garden Pentecostal Church. Edgar supported many local Pentecostal churches and was a supporter of the Richlands Christian Academy. She was a member of the Richlands Tabernacle and faithfully worked in the service of the Lord until her death. In addition to her work in the church, Edgar loved to quilt, crochet, draw, sing and play the banjo. Mrs. Rife is survived by three daughters, Marie Meadows and husband Ernest of Belfast, Va., Creta Horn and husband Leonard of Claypool Hill and Madgie Vandyke and husband Arlin of Raven, Va.; daughter-in-law, Mrs. Estel (Virginia) Rife of Claypool Hill; one sister, Jeannette Cantrell of Pilgrims Knob; and one brother, John Bucklen of Paintlick, Va. Edgar also leaves behind seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and many wonderful friends. Mr. Smith was retired from the Town of Saltville as the assistant chief of police. He dedicated 23 years in police service, including Abingdon, Glade Spring and Big Stone Gap. He was a member of the Light House Baptist Church. Patricia Ann Spencer BRISTOL, Tenn. – Patricia Ann Spencer, age 68, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, due to complications of Alzheimer’s disease. She died at the Bristol Nursing Home. Mrs. Spencer was a native of Matewan, W.Va., and was the daughter of the late Paul and Lillian Smith. She had lived most of her life in Westland, Mich., until her retirement brought her to Bristol Tennessee in 1985, where she had lived since that time. Her favorite pastime was taking care of children and she was a devoted member of Belle Meadows Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Spencer was preceded in death by her first husband, George Arthur Giggey Sr., a man who was well-respected and loved by all. Clarence Stacy ABINGDON – Clarence Stacy, 79 years of age, of Guilford Drive, passed away Friday, Nov. 12, 2004, in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon, from a long illness. Born in McDowell County, W.Va., he was a son of the late Sylvester and Cora Osborne Stacy. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a retired coal miner. Mr. Stacy was preceded in death by his wife, Della Mullins Stacy. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Burton Stacy and Burl Stacy, three sisters, Lottie Mullins, Mildred Payne and Tilda Viars, and two daughters, Carolyn Stacy and Priscilla Stacy. Mr. Stacy is survived by two daughters, Yolanda Harriet and husband James McClanahan Jr., Grundy and Rita (Katie) Stacy, Bristol Virginia; two sons, Sherdon and wife Linda Stacy, Claypool Hill, Va., and Coburn and wife Mary Stacy, Breaks, Va.; one sister, Melba Addair, Abingdon; and one brother, Berkley Stacy, Canton, Ohio. Also, Mr. Stacy is survived by seven grandchildren, Kim Keene, Della Elizabeth (Liza) McClanahan, Michael Matney, Jeff Perkins, Kenneth Perkins, James R. McClanahan III and Danny Stacy; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
