Helen Blankenship COEBURN – Helen Marie Blankenship, age 69, of HC 01, passed away Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004. She was the daughter of the late Delmon and Pruda Blankenship. In addition to her parents, one sister, Betty Blankenship, one brother, Roy Blankenship, and one grandson, Joseph Ray Oquin preceded her in death. She was a member of the Old Regular Baptist Church for about 38 years. Her final membership was at the Caney Fork Old Regular Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Ulan Oquin; six children, Terry Lee Oquin of St. Paul, Carlos Wayne Oquin and Jimmy Allen Oquin, both of Haysi, Ricky Dean Oquin of Cumberland, Va., Elder Danny Lynn Oquin of Coeburn and Nina Louise (Oquin) Compton of Coeburn; 11 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and five great- grandchildren. Ruby Keen Brown GRUNDY – Ruby Keen Brown, 80 years of age, of the Slate Creek section, passed away Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004, at her home. Born in Buchanan County, Jan. 29, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Witten Keen and Martilie Osborne Keen. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, retired from General Electric Corporation of Cicero, Ill., was of the Baptist faith, an avid gardener, enjoyed quilting and sewing for her children and was a loving mother and grandmother. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sherman Brown, two sisters, Minda Jane Mullins and Lillie Viars; eight brothers, William Keen, Noah Keen, Howard Keen, Ervin Keen, Earl Keen, Dockie Keen, George Keen and Melvin Keen; and one daughter-in-law, Mary Nell Brown. She is survived by three daughters, Janette Miller and Janice Zolman and husband Forrest, all of Grundy, and Geneva Gibson and husband James of Hurley, Va.; five sons, Russell Brown of Grundy, Ralph Brown and wife Gloria of Cicero, Ray Brown and Randall Brown, both of Grundy, and Rammie Brown and wife Jatana of Hampstead, N.C. She is also survived by 31 grandchildren; 35 great- grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Robert Clendenen Sr. Robert "Bob" Adams Clendenen Sr., born March 8, 1923, passed away at his home on Sunday, Nov.14, 2004, with all of his family around him. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County Va., and attended Bristol Virginia High School, where he was a star football player. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in the European Theatre as a member of the 9th Armored Division during World War II. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart and Silver Star. He returned in 1945 and married Margaret Tuell in 1946. He began his career as a farmer, and, in 1953, went to work for the City of Bristol, Virginia as a policeman. In 1956, he joined the Washington County Virginia Sheriff’s Office as one of only three deputies under Newt Boardwine. He rose to the rank of chief deputy before he succeeded George Kite as sheriff on Jan. 31, 1970. He served as sheriff until he retired in December, 1983, after 27 years of service to Washington County. He pioneered a program where inmates grew their own food in gardens, which they planted and maintained. He also received a national award in 1973 for the creation of the central dispatch system for Washington County, Va. He remained an honorary member of the sheriff’s department. He received numerous civic awards for his public service, both during his career and after his retirement, including the Paul Harris Award from the Abingdon Rotary Club in 2003. He was a 58-year-plus member of the Masonic Lodge and Past Master of York Lodge 12. He was also a lifelong, staunch "Yellow Dog" Democrat. After retirement, he continued to farm and donated much of his time and love to the Wallace United Methodist Church, founded by his great-grandfather, Milton Lee Clendenen. He felt his greatest accomplishment in life was the loving family and many friends he leaves. He will always be loved and respected for his fairness and quick wit in all situations. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Mason Clendenen, his father, W.W. Clendenen, a daughter, Margaret Susan Clendenen, and his three brothers, Charles Clendenen, William Clendenen and James Clendenen. Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Margaret Tuell Clendenen; one sister, Eva Desmone Price; his children: son, Robert A. Clendenen Jr. of Bristol Virginia, and three daughters, Mary Dell Clendenen Canter and her husband, Gary, of Mendota, Va., Doris Clendenen Shuman and her husband, Kenny, of Abingdon, and Jackie Clendenen Shelley and her husband, Jeff, of Bristol Virginia; a special nephew and friend, Bill Desmone; his constant companion, "Freckles"; his grandchildren, Laura Lee Clendenen, Jonathan Morrison, John Clendenen, Jennifer Leonard, Brian Sheffey, Lucas Shelley, Sidney A. Maude Cross BRISTOL, Tenn. – Maude Virginia Wheeler Cross, age 90, of 114 Lark St., went to be with the Lord Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004, at NHC of Bristol. Mrs. Cross was born April 28, 1914, in Meadowview, a daughter of the late Isaiah and Lucy Frazier Wheeler, and had made her home in the Bristol area most of her life. She was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church, a member of the Border City Chapter 162 of the Eastern Star and a retired employee of the Bristol Tennessee School System, having worked in the cafeterias at Vance and Tennessee High. Thelma Skeen Marrs BIG STONE GAP, Va. – Thelma Skeen Marrs, age 88, passed away Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004, at St. Mary’s Hospital at Norton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Keith Marrs, a daughter, Elaine Carty, and infant son, George Marrs. Nettie Mazzacone ALDER, Mont. – Nettie Dorsett Barracca Mazzacone, age 81, formerly of Beacon, N.Y., and Danville, Va., died Nov. 14, 2004, in Barrett Memorial Hospital, Dillon, Mont. Born Jan. 24, 1923, in Danville, she was the daughter of Dallas Dorsett and Beulah Martin Dorsett. Her first marriage was to Virgil Barracca in New York City. She retired from Fairgate Rule Co. as a security guard and was a member of the Teamsters Union. She spent her early years in Danville. In 1939, she moved to New York City. After her marriage in 1946, she moved to Beacon. She loved gardening, cooking, woodworking and was a Girl Scout leader. She was married July 21, 1946, in Beacon to the late Louis Mazzacone, who died in 1999. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son, John Mazzacone, brothers, Ernic, Everett, Herman and Howard; and a sister, Isabelle Truitt. Survivors: children, Richard Mazzacone of Beacon, Sheri and Tom Luksha of Laurin, Mont., Louis and Darlene Mazzacone Jr. of Beacon, Robert Mazzacone of Chicago and Diane and Jim Dowsey of Rowlett, Texas; 16 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
