Lucas Daniel Blevins JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. – Lucas Daniel Blevins, Rockwood Drive, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. He was a Washington County native and a son of Elder Daniel C. and Theresa Ann Greer Blevins Jr. of Jonesborough. He was a 2001 graduate of David Crockett High School, where he participated in Naval Junior ROTC. He was currently employed as a night stocker at Ingle’s Supermarket and had previously been employed as a front end manager at Food City. Robert Clendenen Sr. Robert "Bob" Adams Clendenen Sr., born March 8, 1923, passed away at his home on Sunday, Nov.14, 2004, with all of his family around him. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County Va., and attended Bristol Virginia High School, where he was a star football player. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in the European Theatre as a member of the 9th Armored Division during World War II. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart and Silver Star. He returned in 1945 and married Margaret Tuell in 1946. He began his career as a farmer, and, in 1953, went to work for the City of Bristol, Virginia as a policeman. In 1956, he joined the Washington County Virginia Sheriff’s Office as one of only three deputies under Newt Boardwine. He rose to the rank of chief deputy before he succeeded George Kite as sheriff on Jan. 31, 1970. He served as sheriff until he retired in December, 1983, after 27 years of service to Washington County. He pioneered a program where inmates grew their own food in gardens, which they planted and maintained. He also received a national award in 1973 for the creation of the central dispatch system for Washington County, Va. He remained an honorary member of the sheriff’s department. He received numerous civic awards for his public service, both during his career and after his retirement, including the Paul Harris Award from the Abingdon Rotary Club in 2003. He was a 58-year-plus member of the Masonic Lodge and Past Master of York Lodge 12. He was also a lifelong, staunch "Yellow Dog" Democrat. After retirement, he continued to farm and donated much of his time and love to the Wallace United Methodist Church, founded by his great-grandfather, Milton Lee Clendenen. He felt his greatest accomplishment in life was the loving family and many friends he leaves. He will always be loved and respected for his fairness and quick wit in all situations. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Mason Clendenen, his father, W.W. Clendenen, a daughter, Margaret Susan Clendenen, and his three brothers, Charles Clendenen, William Clendenen and James Clendenen. Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Margaret Tuell Clendenen; one sister, Eva Desmone Price; his children: son, Robert A. Clendenen Jr. of Bristol Virginia, and three daughters, Mary Dell Clendenen Canter and her husband, Gary, of Mendota, Va., Doris Clendenen Shuman and her husband, Kenny, of Abingdon, and Jackie Clendenen Shelley and her husband, Jeff, of Bristol Virginia; a special nephew and friend, Bill Desmone; his constant companion, "Freckles"; his grandchildren, Laura Lee Clendenen, Jonathan Morrison, John Clendenen, Jennifer Leonard, Brian Sheffey, Lucas Shelley, Sidney A. Clendenen Shuman and youngest granddaughter, Morgan Shelley; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Simcox was born Feb. 21, 1919, in Mountain City, Tenn., a daughter of the late Johnny and Pearl Gentry Maxwell, and has made her home in the Bristol area most of her life. She was the widow of Emory W. Simcox and was preceded in death by a son, Stacy Simcox. She was of the Baptist faith. Simmons, age 72, of 16308 Old Jonesboro Road, died peacefully Monday, Nov. 15, 2004, at the Wellmont Hospice House, Bristol Tennessee. He was born in Red Ash, Va., June 3, 1932, a son of the late Roy William Simmons and Wanda Short Simmons of Richlands. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, George Thomas Simmons. Survivors of his immediate family are Dennis Simmons, Norma Lee, Bill Simmons, Jack Simmons, Sandra Spruell and Renee Simmons. He served in the U.S. Army in the Korean conflict. He was a member of the Richlands Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the Shriners Organization (Scottish Rite), Roanoke Chapter. He was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel by the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. He was honored by the Richlands Area Chamber of Commerce as Citizen of the Year in 1972. He also served as director of industry, manufacturing and transportation for the Chamber. He was on the Advisory Board of Directors for Dominion Bank of Richlands. A leader in the field of business, Bernard R. Simmons founded S&S Machinery in 1955, where he designed battery-powered, underground machinery for use in the mines of his native Tazwell County. S&S Machinery later became S&S Corporation, the world’s leading manufacturer of rubber-tired, underground mining equipment. In 1976, his corporation became part of the worldwide Ingersoll-Rand Company. He retired from Ingersoll-Rand in 1983. In 1987, upon the request of Ingersoll- Rand’s management, he became chairman, president and chief executive officer in a joint venture with Simmons-Rand Company, overseeing the operations from the corporate headquarters in Bristol Virginia. In recognition of his distinguished contributions to society, education and the college, as well as outstanding leadership in the field of business, he received an honorary degree, doctor of humanities, from Ferrum College. He was well- respected for his leadership as well as his integrity and concern for his fellow man. Special recognition is given to the late Ralph B. Davis for his partnership and brotherhood with Bernard. Mr. Simmons always spoke of his success depending on each and every employee at the corporation. Survivors are his loving and loyal wife of 52 years, Loretta Price Simmons; sons, William B. Simmons of Bristol Virginia, and Bryan K. Simmons of Radford, Va.; daughters, Bernetta Saunders and husband Graham M. Saunders and Alisa Simmons-Snapp and husband Keith D. Viers Jr. BRISTOL, Tenn. – Brice M. Viers Jr., age 78, of 136 Cedar Road, went to be with the Lord Monday, Nov. 15, 2004, at Wellmont Hospice House. Mr. Viers Jr. was born Dec. 4, 1925, in Prater, Va., a son of the late Brice M. Sr. and Ethel Owens Viers. He had lived in Vansant, Va., before moving to Bristol, where he has made his home for the past 44 years. He was a retired truck driver, a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Angie Viers, two daughters, Brenda L. Rice and husband Charlie and Janice L, Jackson and husband Bascom; three granddaughters, Jennifer, Julie and Amanda; three great-grandchildren, Taylor, Rachel and Jacob; and several nieces and nephews. Lonnie Edward Wolfe KINGSPORT – Lonnie Edward (Ed) Wolfe went home to be with his Lord, Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004, at the age of 64, at his residence. Ed was born July 28, 1940, in Dungannon, Va., and he was a son of the late George Kyle Wolfe and Ora (Blevins) Wolfe Akers. He graduated from Appalachia High School. He was a member of Beulah Baptist Church and served as a police officer with the City of Kingsport from 1962-1975. He achieved the rank of sergeant and retired in 1975, due to health reasons. He was a professional wrestler, expert marksman, avid country music lover and musician. He played the guitar and harmonica with two local country music bands. Ed is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sandra Trigg Wolfe; his mother, Ora Blevins Akers; his sister, Shelby McDavid and husband Gary; his nephew, Mike Rasnake; his mother-in-law, Madge Trigg; seven sisters-in-law; five brothers-in- law; several nieces and nephews; and a multitude of friends. Calling hours will be 5-8 p.m. Wednesday in the East Lawn Funeral Home, and services will follow at 8 p.m. in the East Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Gary Hood, Pastor David Hood and Pastor Al South officiating, and will be honored by the Kingsport Police Department changing of the guard.
