Morris Buchanan MARION – Morris "Buck" Buchanan, age 67, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004, in Clemmons, N.C. He was born in Smyth County to the late Alvie W. and Mary Sheffield Buchanan, and was retired from the Pepsi Bottling Group, with over 41 years of service. Mr. Buchanan had lived most of his life in Marion and moved to Winston Salem in May of 2004. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Marion and had joined the Lewisville United Methodist Church in Lewisville, N.C. Ruby Ilene Dowdy DORAN, Va. – Mrs. Ruby Ilene Dowdy, age 71, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004, at a Tazewell hospital, following a lengthy illness. Born in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of the late Vernie Lee and Viola Proffitt Rogers. She was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward R. Dowdy; two sons, Frankie and Billy Gene Dowdy; one brother, James Rogers; and one sister, Betty Lee Nipper. She is survived by two sons, Larry Dowdy of Doran and James Dowdy of High Point, N.C.; five daughters, Sarah Cruey of High Point, Anna May Thompson and Edna Cordle, both of Doran, Jenny Thompson of Tazewell and Rebecca Sparks of Asheboro, N.C.; one half-brother, Curtis Rogers of Tazewell; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive. Born on June 24, 1924, in Washington County, Va., he was a son of the late Walter Fields and Mable McFadden Fields. Henry was also preceded in death by a son, Kenneth W. Henry was a member of Carvosso United Methodist Church and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in Northern Africa campaigns. Troy Lee Frazier BRISTOL, Tenn. – Our loving daddy, Troy Lee Frazier, age 77, went home to be with his Heavenly Father, at his home, with his family by his side, Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004. Mr. Frazier was a lifelong resident of Bristol, and the son of the late Lucian and Maxie Williams Frazier. Mr. Frazier was the longest living member of Pleasant View Baptist Church of Bluff City, where he had served as a deacon and former choir director. He was also a member of Zollicoffer Masonic Lodge. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and retired from the Teamsters as a truck driver. Mr. Frazier was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Louise Bradley Frazier; a brother, Fred Frazier; a sister, JoAnn Prater; and a great-grandson, Zachary Smith. He is survived by his daughter, Darlene Shepard of Bristol Tennessee, and his son, David Frazier of Bristol Tennessee. Estil Lewis (Harkie) Harkleroad, age 84, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2004, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. John M. Hodges Jr. BLUFF CITY – John M. Hodges Jr., age 60, of 580 Sells Road, left his earthly life Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004, at Bristol Regional Medical Center, following a short illness. Johnny believed it was in the plan and he was ready to go when God called him home. He was born Jan. 22, 1944, in Washington County, Tenn., but lived all of his life in Bluff City. He was the son of the late J.M. and Ethel Millard Hodges. He was a 1962 honors graduate of Bluff City High School and received his B.S. degree from East Tennessee State University in 1971. From 1971 until 1989, he was co-owner and later owner of Fyr-Fyter Sales and Service of Bristol. He also owned and operated Portable Buildings ’n’ Such in Bluff City, until the time of his death. He also farmed, raised cattle and miniature donkeys. John was a member of Addilynn Memorial United Methodist Church and the Adult III Sunday School Class. He served as chairman of the trustees for many years. He was a 40-year member of the Avoca Volunteer Fire Department, having served as chief, building chairman, and was currently serving as vice chairman of the Board of Directors. John was also a member and past president of the Sullivan County Volunteer Firemen’s Association. He was a commissioner for the Bristol-Bluff City Utility District and was currently serving as president, as he had done for the past several years. He was a 34-year member of Zollicoffer No. 444 F & AM Masonic Lodge in Bluff City, and was currently serving as treasurer. He was also a 34-year member of Bluff City Chapter No. 414 Order of the Eastern Star and was a Past Patron. He served as Grand Sentinel in 2002 for the Grand Chapter of Tennessee, O.E.S. He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Judy Hodges; his daughter, Kim Hagy and her husband, Rusty, also of Bluff City; and the love of his life and constant enjoyment was his granddaughter, Abbygail Grace Hagy (L.K.) Joshua was a graduate of Eau Gallie High School Class of 2003 and had been active with ROTC, Model Student Senate, Interact Club and the EGHS cheerleaders. He had also played high school hockey, freshman football and played for West Melbourne Football. Josh competed in Extreme All-star Cheerleading. Margaret Sullivan CHARLESTON, S.C. – Margaret G. Sullivan, wife of Jimmy D. Sullivan, entered into eternal rest on Nov. 17, 2004. Margaret was born in Bristol Virginia Dec. 16, 1927, the daughter of Dennis Hale Goodman and Nancy Belle Jones Goodman. She was a retired LSM operator with the Post Office and a member of First Presbyterian Church of Bristol Tennessee. Margaret completed high school early and completed two years of college. She then went on to Elkins Institute in Atlanta to earn the First Class FCC Radio- Telephone Operators license. She did volunteer work for the Western Carolina Handicapped Children’s Center in Morganton, N.C., the Ronald McDonald House and the Crisis Ministry Homeless Shelter Soup Kitchen, both in Charleston. Surviving are her husband of Charleston; one daughter, Donna Lynne Sandoe of Charlotte, N.C.; one sister, Mary Lou Hulbert of Ellicott City, Md.; one brother, Paul J. Mr. Vance was a devoted Christian man and his testimony to the world was, "To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord." Survivors include wife, Carolyn S. Vance; sons, Michael E. She made her home in the Maryland area most her life, moving to Jewell Ridge 14 years ago, and was of the Pentecostal faith. Wilson GLADE SPRING – Charles William Wilson, MSGT, USAF (Ret.), age 72, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2004, at the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. Born on Jan. 1, 1932, in Washington County, Va., Charles was a son of the late Emmett Grant Wilson and Mary Ann Moody Wilson. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Wanda Hawkins, and 14 brothers and sisters. Mr. Wilson was retired from the U.S. Air Force as a master sergeant. He had a total of 22 years military service, having originally served two years in the U.S. Army and then transferring to the U.S. Air Force, where he served 20 years. He had received several medals, campaign ribbons and awards. He had served faithfully in the Korean conflict and the Vietnam War. He had also retired from the Southwestern State Mental Health Hospital in Marion and had served as an instructor at Virginia Highlands Community College in the air conditioning and refrigeration studies course. He was of the Southern Baptist faith. He was an avid outdoorsman and his favorite activities were hunting, fishing and traveling. Charles is survived by his wife of 44 years, Diane Brown Wilson; a son, Ronald Wilson and wife Jo Ann; daughters, Tammy Wilson of the home, Ruth Ernest of Marion and Charlene Bobbitt and husband Douglas; his brother, Frank Wilson of Spokane, Wash.; his sisters, Betty Churchill and Geneva Wilson, both of Modesto, Calif.; his grandchildren, Michael Hawkins, Travis Hawkins, Charles Jason Ernest, Justin Wilson, Stephanie Ernest, Kelsey Wilson, Joey Blevins and Andrew Blevins; a special hunting buddy, Michael Blevins; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, at Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring, with Rev. Mark Ross and Rev. Dennis Blazier officiating. Military graveside rites will be provided by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard Detail from Pope Air Force Base. Honorary casket bearers will be Andrew Blevins, Raydel Wilson, Michael Blevins, Doug Bobbitt, Michael Hawkins, Travis Hawkins, Jason Ernest, Justin Wilson and Joey Blevins. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, (located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens).
