Affectionately known to her family and friends as "Ma," she took great pride in cooking for her family and friends around her home on Guest River. She made her home in recent years at Gilliam Court. Surviving are five daughters, Margaret Tate and Teresa Barnette of Norton, Judy Hughes and Pam Hamilton of Wise and Sue Stapleton of River Rouge, Mich.; and five sons, Larry and Danny Adams of Norton, Freddie Adams, Jackie Adams and Jeff (Radar) Adams, all of Wise. Also surviving are two sisters, Juanita Bolling and Helen Calhoun of Norton; 22 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren and one great- great-grandchild. She was born in Wise County and was a lifelong resident of the county. She was a mother, a homemaker and was a member of the Freewill Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her mother, Caldonia Baker; her husband of 66 years, Jesse Baker; a granddaughter, Kathy Baker; three sisters, Myra Salyers, Maggie Holt and Nora Rowland; and a brother, Thaddeus E. Baker. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Margie Baker Beverly and Carl Beverly, Pound; twin sons and daughters-in-law, Burl and Elaine Baker, Wise, and Buford and Rita Baker, Coeburn; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Calhoun, 74 years of age, of the Little Prater section, passed away Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004, at the Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, following a brief illness. Born in Avery County, N.C., he was the son of the late Larkin C and Mary Hartley Calhoun. Mr. Calhoun was a member of Little Prater Church of Christ, was the owner and operator of Calhoun’s Garage in Grundy, for 25 years. He was a formal coal miner having retired from Jewell Smokeless Corporation. Mr. Calhoun is survived by his wife of 53 years, Irma Joyce Ratliff Calhoun of Grundy; one daughter, Mrs. Brenda C. and her husband Larry K. Owens of Vansant, Va.; three sons, Johnny P. and wife Susie Calhoun of Birmingham, Ala., William Bradley and Jennifer Calhoun of Grundy and Brian and Debbie Calhoun of Blacksburg, Va.; two sisters, Ruth and her husband John Moody of Jacksonville, Fla., and Nina Mae Calhoun of Jacksonville; and five grandchildren, Jo and her husband Eric Marshall, Amy Calhoun, Aaron Calhoun, Nathaniel Calhoun and Lyndsi Calhoun. Curtis Dye CEDAR BLUFF – Mr. Curtis "Willie" Dye, age 74, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004, at a Richlands hospital, following a lengthy illness. He was born in Russell County, Va., and was a son of the late Howard C. and Dixie V. Hess Dye, both Russell County natives. He was a lifelong resident of the Cedar Bluff area and was a retired miner. He was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran and a member of the John Ratliff American Legion Post 164 of Grundy. Mr. Dye was of the Holiness faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one grandson, Gregory Dye, two sisters, Omega and Ruby Catherine Dye; also, two brothers, Luther Daniel and Clarence Dye. Henry Fields ABINGDON – Mr. Henry (HenJohn) Fields, age 80, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. Born on June 24, 1924, in Washington County, Va., he was a son of the late Walter Fields and Mable McFadden Fields. Henry was also preceded in death by a son, Kenneth W. "Kenny" Fields, a brother, Walter "Cracker" Fields, and sisters, Polly Lethcoe, Hodgie Jones, Adeline Hall and Ruby Phipps. Henry was a member of Carvosso United Methodist Church and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in Northern Africa campaigns. He was a retired school bus driver for the Washington County School System. A native of Bristol Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Abe and Polly Fleenor Odum. Mrs. Musick was of the Methodist faith. She was a nurse for 20 years and worked for ITT, Gray, Tenn., for 10 years. She was an avid animal lover and she loved bluegrass music. Mrs. Musick was preceded in death by her husband, Avery B. Musick, and a daughter, Sherry Teresa Musick. Born Oct. 18, 1925, she was the daughter of the late T.J. Lockhart and Rose Belle Wolford Lockhart. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, of the Christian faith, owner/operator of Ramey’s Grocery for over 40 years, loved helping people and was a loving mother and grandmother. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilson Ramey, one son, Jackie Dean Scalf, two brothers, Edgar Lee Lockhart and Reverend Clyde Lockhart. She is survived by seven daughters, Loretta Skeens and husband Delph and Barbara Fraley and husband Edsel, all of Big Rock, Levon Sawyers and husband Danny of Conaway, Va., Patricia Fletcher and husband Donnie of Grundy, Leotta Hensley and husband Larry of Stafford, Va., Vivian Carol Ramey of Locust Grove, Va., and Kathy Diane Lowe-Smith and husband Victor of Murphy, N.C.; three sons, Jimmie Wilson Ramey and wife Carol of Cecil, Ohio, Douglas Lowe and wife Tresh and Kirk "Tony" Lowe and wife Lucinda, all of Big Rock; and six sisters, Reatha Looney of Grundy, Jeanette Flemming of Mouthcard, Ky., Lois Fraley of Big Rock, Lorraine Arnold of Tennessee, June Dotson of Grundy and Ruby Phillips of Michigan. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Saul BRISTOL, Tenn. – Samuel H. Saul, age 82, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004, at Wellmont Hospice House. He was the son of the late Samuel and Gertrude Humphries Saul, and had spent most of his life in the Bristol area. Mr. Saul had retired from the auto industry. He was a member of Volunteer Baptist Church, where he was very active, serving as a deacon for several years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane Carrier Saul; a daughter, Frances Ann Saul; brother, James M. Saul; and a sister, Frances C. Saul. Survivors include sisters, Doris Stevens McCracken and husband Steward of Bristol Virginia and Anna Riff and husband Kendall of Bluff City; brother, Charles Patrick Saul and wife Katherine of Bristol Tennessee; several nieces and nephews, including Edward L. Carrier of Bluff City and J.W. Carrier of Piney Flats; and a special niece, Barbara Carrier, with whom he had resided for the past year.
