Brown CEDAR BLUFF – Mr. Winifred Hugh "Wink" Brown, age 53, of the Ponderosa Heights section, died Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, at a Richlands hospital. He was born in Richlands and was a son of Mrs. Betty Sword of Richlands and the late Mr. Donnie Brown. He was a lifelong resident of the Tazewell County area, was a 1969 graduate of Richlands High School and was a retired prep plant foreman for Jewell Smokeless Coal Corporation. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Mr. Garnet Sword, and grandparents, Hubert and Delma Brown. Survivors, in addition to his mother, are his loving wife, Shelley Perry Brown; two cherished daughters, Jenny Brown of Cedar Bluff and Andrea Brown and fiancé, Jimmy Fuller, of Cedar Bluff; and a very special friend, his dog Hannah, also survives. Clevinger GRUNDY – Dewey Clayton Clevinger, 84 years of age, passed away Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following a brief illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Willie Thompson and Ida Jane Dotson Clevinger. Mr. Clevinger was a member of Grundy Church of Christ, was a former employee for Virginia Department of Highways and was a retired employee of the Town of Grundy sanitation department. Mr. Clevinger is survived by his wife, Ella Joyce Perry Clevinger of Grundy; two daughters, Vivian Carol and husband Gary Coleman of Grundy and Mona Rebecca Clevinger of Grundy; two sons, Jerry Eugene Clevinger of Tucson, Ariz., and Perry Clayton and wife Joan Clevinger, Punta Gorda, Fla.; one sister, Opal Edith Belcher of Columbus, Ohio; one brother, William Burton Clevinger of Abingdon; one special niece, Vivian Fogarty; and one special nephew, Bill J. Mrs. Gillenwater was born in Murray County, Minn., on Dec. 7, 1909, a daughter of the late Henry J. and Fern Sellman Lamaack. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Weber City, where she taught the beginners Sunday School class for many years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Aubrey Gillenwater, in 1990, and brothers, Albert and Roy Lamaack. Rosa Lee Gross DUFFIELD, Va. – Rosa Lee Gross, age 92, of the Ridgecrest Manor Nursing Home, formerly of the Clinchport community, passed away to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, early Thursday morning at the Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center, after an illness. A native of Scott County, Va., she was born the daughter of the late Hiram and Rebecca Wallen Jenkins. She was a member of Kaylor’s Chapel Church and was a manager of the Natural Tunnel Chasm & Caverns for 28 years. She also was a former member of the Rebekah Lodge 86 of Gate City. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Taylor Gross (1977); son, Jackie Bruce Gross; one brother, Charlie Jenkins; and two sisters, Della Mae Tate and Nannie Kate Tipton. She is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Dollie Jean Baldwin and husband Bruce of Clinchport; brother and sister-in-law, Kyle Curtis Jenkins and wife Mildred of Kingsport; and several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Jessee WISE – Gracie Magdalene Jessee, 84, having been in declining health for an extended period, passed away peacefully Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. She was born in Pike County, Ky., the daughter of Matilda Blair McCown and John Sherman McCown, and was the last survivor of 16 children. She was raised and educated in Letcher County, Ky., lived in Raleigh, N.C., with Mary and Bill Collins, while her husband was in the Army, serving our country during World War II. She moved to Wise after the war and lived in the Hurricane section of Wise for more than 55 years. She was the widow of Charlie J. Jessee. She was the daughter of a coal miner, the wife of a coal miner, the mother of a coal miner and was proud of her heritage and her family. She was a kind, gentle and caring lady, a wonderful wife and a devoted mother to Charlie R. and Billy. Her hospitality and cooking skills are legendary, as was her love and concern for all of her family. She was especially close to her brother, Charley McCown, and her sisters, Froan Stanley and Nona Blevins. She was and remains an inspiration of unconditional love to all lives she touched and will be sorely missed by all who knew her. Surviving are her sons, Charlie R. Jessee and his wife Jill Jessee and Billy Collins (as his second mother) and his wife Sharon Collins; grandchildren, Richard, John and Becky; great-grandchild, Joey; many beloved nieces and nephews, including Helen Stanley, Donna Hunsaker, Richard Hunsaker, Kathy Hunsaker, Wayland Jessee, Brenda Smith, Andrea Tackett, Jack Blevins, Jean Long, Carol Sweeney, Jim Stanley (with whom she shared the same birthday), Nora Gibson, Charles Stanley; and many others, including extended family members whom she also loved deeply. Legard Jr. ABINGDON – John Edwin Legard Jr., age 86, a lifelong resident of Abingdon, died Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, in the Johnston Memorial Hospital. Mr. Legard was a retired manager of Cash Wholesale Grocery Co. He was a lifelong member of the Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church and served on the Board of the Deacons and Church Session. He was a former treasurer of the Sunday School and a former church treasurer. Mr. Legard was a star athlete and graduate of Lees-McRae College and a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Pacific Theater of World War II. Donnie Musick HARTFIELD, Va. – Mr. Donnie Musick, age 45, passed away Friday morning, Nov. 19, 2004, in a Gloucester, Va., hospital. Born Aug. 2, 1959, in Honaker, he was a son of Elsie Stevens Musick of Saluda, Va., and the late Bascom Musick. He had resided in Hartfield for the past 20 years, moving there from Honaker. He was co-owner of Saluda Siding and Trim. He loved the outdoors, whether it was deer hunting or cat fishing. He was a big NASCAR fan, especially when Little "E" was in the lead. He will be deeply missed by family and friends, but never forgotten. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Earl Musick. William Opalach LEBANON – William (Bill) Opalach, 44, died Friday, Nov. 19, 2004. Born March 31, 1960, in Saudi Arabia, the son of the Betty Musick Opalach and the late Anthony S. Opalach, he had lived in Kingsport for 20 years, moving to Leesburg, Fla., in 1996, and to Floral City, Fla., in 2003. He was employed as an electrical lineman for the I.B.E.W. local 222 and had served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the VFW, the American Legion, the Kingsport Masonic Lodge and the Jericho Shrine Temple. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Chillicothe, Ohio. Owens MEADOWVIEW – Esther LuEllen Owens, age 54, passed away Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, at her residence. She was born Jan. 3, 1950, and was the daughter of the late Jessie Lee and Junery Thomas. She was preceded in death by a brother, "Red" Tommy Thomas. She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Eugene Owens of the home; her son, Tommy Thomas and wife Betty, Glade Spring; her daughter, Melissa Owens, Abingdon; her brother, Donnie Thomas of the home; her sisters, Betty Eller, Abingdon, Bonnie Hess, Glade Spring, Debbie Wagstaff and husband Gary, Abingdon, Kay Thomas, Meadowview, and Cordella Vanhooser and husband Wayne, Meadowview; her grandchildren, Tory, Heather and Kevin Thomas, Glade Spring; her nieces, Leslie Eller, Abingdon, and Doris Garcia and husband Martin, Glade Spring; her nephews, Roger Eller and wife Kayoko, California, Daniel Rhea Vanhooser, Tommy Lee Vanhooser and Daniel Wayne Vanhooser, all of Meadowview; four great-nieces; three great-nephews; her special friends, Mary Forrester, Lucille Widner, Mike and Wanda Barbrow and Shirley Lampkins; and several aunts and uncles. The funeral service will be conducted Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, at 2 p.m. in the Church of God of Prophecy, Glade Spring, with Rev. Geary Jonas and Rev. Jerry Anders officiating. Wanda Faye Sourbeer BRISTOL, Va. – Wanda Faye Sourbeer, age 72, passed away on Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, at Ridgecrest Nursing Home in Duffield, Va. She was a native of Andover, Va., but had spent most of her life in the Bristol area. She was a daughter of the late John and Bessie Lee Bray, and was a member of Fellowship Chapel. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert (Bob) Taylor Sourbeer, and two sisters, Marjorie Bray and Frances Johnson. Survivors include son, Mark Sourbeer and wife Debbie of Bristol Virginia; granddaughters, Brittany and Brooke Sourbeer of Bristol Virginia; sisters, Phyllis Lewis of Bristol Virginia and Jean Mauk and Jane Kite of Bristol Tennessee; and brothers, Jim Bray and David Bray, both of Bristol Tennessee, Ronda Bray of Gray, Tenn. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, at 4 p.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Scott Price officiating. Talbert Robert Daniel Talbert, 77, left the loving arms of his family on Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, to start a new life with his Lord and Savior. Affectionately known at "Red" by his friends and family, he was born in Honaker, a son of the late William Dewey and Mary Alice Dye Talbert. He resided in Bristol Virginia for the last 40 years, was retired from Mackie Vending Company and was of the Methodist faith. Red was a Mason and a Shriner and was president of the Shriners’ Road Runners club for several years. Since 1989, drove the Shriners’ hospital van for crippled children to and from Cincinnati and Greenville, S.C., usually twice a month. He gave much to many and wanted nothing in return. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James C. Talbert of Wytheville, and a grandson, Danny Widener. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 38 years, Peggy; daughters, Tammy Summerson and her husband Chris and Patty Hale and her special friend, Bobby Flannigan, all of Bristol Virginia; a son, Tony of the home; two grandsons, Luke and Johnny Summerson; one granddaughter, Ashley Leonard; and one great-grandson, Gavin Daniel Leonard; a sister, Jean Counts of Clearwater, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Mary Smith Talbert of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews. Per Red’s wishes and the family’s request, a private service will be held at the graveside in Mountain View Cemetery at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon, with Rev. Jerry Russell officiating. Wyatt C. Wilkinson HONAKER – Mr. Wyatt Curry Wilkinson, age 86, passed away Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, at his home. Born June 21, 1918, in West Hamlin, W.Va., he was a son of the late Augustus Ferdinand and Stella Mae Wilkinson. He had lived in Honaker for the past six years, moving here from West Hamlin. A U.S. Army and Air Force veteran, he had served in World War II. He was a member of the Enon Baptist Church in West Virginia and attended the Swords Creek Community Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters. In his generation, he was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Dorothy Helen Stiltner Wilkinson of the home; one son, Rickey Ramsey and his wife Paulette of Swords Creek, Va.; three daughters, Helen Kirkpatrick and husband Ray of Marion, Linda Horne and husband Keith of Belfast, Va., and Shelia Sisk and husband Brady of Keen Mountain, Va.; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Brother Leslie Ritchie officiating. Interment will follow in Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery at Richlands. Relatives and friends will serve as pallbearers.
