Carty Sr. GRAY, Tenn. – Alden Bernard Carty Sr., 142 Bauchman Drive, passed away after a short illness at home, surrounded by his loving family, Wednesday, Nov. 24. He was a native of Nickelsville, Va., and had lived in Washington County for 40 years. He was a son of the late Callie and Jerry Carty. Mr. Carty was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Carty, in April 2003 and several brothers and siters. He is survived by one daughter, Louella Burchfield of Gray; four sons, Woodrow and wife Phyllis, Alden Jr. and wife Janet, Tommy and wife Debbie and Kurt and wife Sandy, all of Gray; several nieces and nephews; six grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Blanche Cumbow ABINGDON – Blanche Cumbow, 84, died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, at Grace Healthcare, Abingdon. Miss Cumbow spent the majority of her career as a professional travel agent and was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. She was the daughter of the late James and Dixie Carmack Forgey. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Buchanan, Cornelia "Boots" Ingoldsby and Irene Sproles, and two brothers, Jim Forgey and Charles Forgey. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and a friend to all who knew her. Psalm 23: "Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me, Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever." Mrs. Vernon was born Sept. 26, 1917, at St. Clair Crossing in Wright Valley and was a daughter of the late Charles Randall Holbrook and Beulah Christina Moore Holbrook. She formerly attended the Amanote Freewill Baptist Church and the Holbrook Chapel in Wrights Valley. In ddition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Thomas Vernon Sr.; brothers, Claude Holbrook, Ward E. Holbrook and Charles R. Holbrook; and a sister, Evelyn I. Quesenberry. She was also preceded by a grandson, Harry T. Vernon III; granddaughters, Heather and Misty Bandy; and a son-in-law, Russell David Bandy.
