Armstrong MARION – John Raymond " Jack" Armstrong, age 66, passed away Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, in the Smyth County Community Hospital. He was born in Brooklyn, Wis., to the late Herbert and Mary Armstrong, and was preceded in death by a brother, Michael Armstrong, and a sister, Marion Armstrong. Mr. Armstrong was a mechanical and aeronautical engineer, having been employed with Curtis Wright Flight, Allied Aerospace and A.A.I. Engineering Inc. Survivors include: five children, Johana Ruth Tuggle, Marion, Kathleen Jeanette Armstrong, Marion, Rebekah Jean Young, Chilhowie, Reuben John Armstrong, Marion and Rachel Kristina Armstrong, Marion; two brothers, Herbert Joe Armstrong, Stoughton, Wis., and Fred A. Armstrong, Ft. Wayne, Ind.; two sisters, Julie Luxinger, Edgerton, Wis., and Susan Armstrong, Webster, Wis.; three grandchildren, Justin Wayne Tuggle, Dakota Darnell Leffler and James Dylan Leffler; and several nieces and nephews. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Weaver Funeral Home. Emily B. Ball KINGSPORT – Mrs. Emily B. Ball, 80, died on Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, at NHC in Johnson City. She was born on Oct. 8, 1924, in Williamsport, Pa., to Rolland and Theresa Drum Bostley. Mrs. Ball grew up in Oakmont, Pa. She married Frederick M. Ball in 1944, and moved to Kingsport in 1951. Mrs. Ball was a homemaker. She is survived by two daughters, Arlene Riddle and her husband, Greg, Jonesborough and Bonnie Wallace and her husband, Dean, Louisville, Ky,; a son, David Ball and his wife, Teri, Knoxville; and three grandchildren, Daniel Wallace, Florida, Lisa Wallace, Lexington, Ky., and Stephen Ball, Knoxville. Lloyd Clark Daniels BRISTOL, Va. – Lloyd (Tom) Clark Daniels, 65 years of age, formerly of Buchanan County, passed away Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, in the Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon. Born in Panther, W.Va., he was the son of the late Clarence Daniels and Ollie Hagy Daniels. He was of the Baptist faith, a U.S. Army veteran, a member of the American Legion Post 164 of Grundy, retired coal operator and a loving husband and devoted father. His love of fishing, hunting and times with his family was what he most cherished in life. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Kathlene Daniels, Ilene Sexton, Jean Reyes and Inis Belcher. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Phyllis Ann McClanahan Daniels of Bristol Virginia; two daughters, Teresa Ratliff and husband Kris of Marion and Elizabeth Woodruff and husband James Alan of Dacula, Ga.; one sister, Teresa Hipps of Platter, Okla.; and four brothers, Jason Daniels of Cicero, Ill., Finis Daniels of Big Rock, Va., Charlie Daniels of Booneville, Ind., and Clarence Daniels of Desplain, Ill. He was also survived by two granddaughters, Danielle Carson Barnes and Bailey Catherine Ratliff; two grandsons, Kristopher Clark Ratliff and Addison Stewart Ratliff; and two step-granddaughters, Taylor Ann Carstarphen and Kristin Michelle Woodruff. Bradley Keith Davis BRISTOL, Va. – Bradley Keith (Brad) Davis, age 28, died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, at his home. He was a lifelong resident of Bristol, where he graduated in 1994 from the John S. Battle High School, and then attended the Virginia Highlands Community College. Brad started working at the Washington County Sheriff’s Department as a dispatcher and later worked at the Bristol Virginia Police Department before returning in 2000 to the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, where he was currently a detective. He was a member of the Victory Baptist Church, the Goodson-Kinderhook Volunteer Fire Department and was a former member of the Washington County Life Saving Crew. He is survived by his parents, Donald B. and Alliouse Mullins Davis of Bristol; his paternal grandfather, Willie M. Davis of Bristol; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Lamie RICHLANDS – Mrs. Marian Thompson Lamie, age 76, passed away Saturday, Nov. 27, at a Grundy health care facility, following a lengthy illness. Born in Tazewell County, Va., she was the daughter of the late William Henry and Blanche Mutter Thompson. She was retired from the Tazewell County School System, where she was the cafeteria manager at Richlands Middle School for 17 years. She was a member of the Church of the Living God in Jesus Name at Doran, Va. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Buster J. (Bud) Lamie Sr., and one daughter, Elizabeth Marlene Lamie. She is survived by three sons, John Lamie and wife Shirley of Richlands, James Edward (Butch) Lamie and wife Mary of Beaufort, S.C., and Buster Lamie Jr. and wife Brenda of Richlands; one daughter, Karen Walls and husband Ralph of Richmond; three sisters, Kathlene (Kat) Honaker and husband Marshall (Shorty) of Cedar Bluff, Maxine Elliott of Tennessee, and Charlene Utt and husband Sonny of Ohio; one brother, William (Bill) Thompson Jr. and wife Joyce of Ohio; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren also survive. He was a lifelong resident of the Tazewell County area and was a retired electrician for Jewell Ridge Coal Corp. and Pittston Coal for 44 years. Mr. Lester was a member of the Richlands First United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Chapman, Henson, Sam and Ralph Lester, and was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving are his caregivers, Buford and Dungcha Mitchell; and several nieces and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be cousins. Lawrence W. Shumate DAMASCUS – Lawrence W. Shumate, age 88, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. He was a native of Konnarock, Va., and was the son of the late Avery and Maggie Shumate. He had lived in Damascus most of his life, was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during World War II and was a member of the Damascus American Legion Post No. 135. He retired from the Raytheon Corporation and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Damascus and was a retired deacon of the church. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by six sisters, one brother, and one grandson, Larry Shumate II. He is survived by his wife, Gladys V. Shumate; one son, Larry W. Shumate, of Covington, Ga.; two daughters, Carol Musser, of Dade City, Fla., and Donna Dove, of Conyers, Ga.; one brother, French Shumate, of Boothwyn, Pa.; one sister, Katrina Hart, of Konnarock, Va.; three grandchildren, Deanna Grubbs, Toni Ecker and Tara VanWormer; seven grandchildren, David and Natalie Ecker, Michael, Brian and Alec Grubbs, and Emily and Nathan VanWormer; and several nieces and nephews. Mark Edward Vance BRISTOL, Tenn. – Officer Mark Edward Vance, 30, of the Tennessee Police Department, was killed in the line of duty Saturday night, Nov. 27, 2004, in Bristol Tennessee. Officer Vance was born in Royal Oak, Mich., a son of Karen Fleming Vance and the late David Vance. He had lived in the Bristol area since 1981, was raised in Russell County, Va., and was a graduate of Lebanon High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and later worked at Bristol Compressors. He first served the police department as an auxiliary office for 3-1/2 years, prior to becoming a full time officer in April of 2003. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Tina Casey Vance; a daughter, Alecia Breanna Vance; a brother, David Vance and his wife Laura; a niece, Trinity Vance; a nephew, Damian Vance; and several aunts and uncles. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o’clock Wednesday evening at Oakley-Cook Funeral Home. Members of the Bristol Police and Fire Departments will stand guard at the casket.
