Cantrell BIG STONE GAP – Gregory Dean Cantrell, 55, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. He was a loving and devoted son, father, husband and friend, who exemplified living a life of Christian love. Greg was an elder in the Gladeville Presbyterian Church in Wise, where he also taught Sunday School and was a youth leader. He was employed as an oncology pharmacist at the Wellmont Southwest Regional Cancer Center in Norton. Greg received a B.A. degree from Clinch Valley College and taught school in Wise County for several years before entering Virginia Tech to further his studies in foreign languages, French, German and Spanish. He also studied French at the American University of Paris. He received his pharmacy degree from the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University and his juris doctor (J.D.-law) degree from Creighton University in Omaha, Neb. In addition to his work as a pharmacist at several health care institutions in Southwest Virginia, he taught pharmacology and law courses at Mountain Empire Community College and the University of Virginia College at Wise. He was a certified diabetes educator and was a volunteer instructor for diabetes education classes in Lee, Scott, Russell and Wise Counties, as well as assisting many individually in understanding and managing their diabetes. He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Cantrell. Surviving are his wife, Sue Cantrell; children, Airman 1st Class Stephen Christopher Cantrell of Whiteman AFB, Missouri, Emily Forrest Cantrell, David Julian Cantrell and Daniel Gregory Cantrell, all of Big Stone Gap; his mother, Edith Baker Cantrell of Pound; one brother, Christopher Cantrell of Pound; lifelong friend, Frank Gentry of Big Stone Gap; and good friends, too many to count. June Hamilton Davis PIKEVILLE, Ky. – June Hamilton Davis, age 72, passed away at 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, at her residence. A graduate of Fugazzi Business College, she had been the office manager of Dr. Steve Davis for many years. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Pikeville. She was a loving wife and mother, an avid sports fan and lover of Kentucky’s horses. She was born in Letcher County, Ky., on June 20, 1932, the daughter of the late Harold Hamilton and Lurlie Billiter Hayes. Along with her father, Harold Hamilton, and her mother, Lurlie Billiter Hayes, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Arvale Hayes. She is survived by her husband, Jim Davis; two sons, Dr. Steve Davis and his wife, Phyllis, of Lexington, Ky., and Mike Davis and his fiancée, Tanya Sipple, of Pikeville; one brother, Jim Hayes of Wilmington, Ohio; and one sister, Jeanette Young of Fairmont, W.Va. Hudson, and was a home economics graduate of Furman University in Greenville, S.C. Patsy McIntyre HIGH POINT, N.C. – Mrs. Patsy Ruth Bratton McIntyre, 65, of N. Clodfelter Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, in Forsyth Medical Center. She was born April 13, 1939, in Castlewood, a daughter of Stuart Bratton and Bessie Collier Bratton. She was retired from McIntyre Metals of Thomasville and was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Ruby Martin Circle and was a member of Ledford Homemakers Club. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Jim and Woodrow Bratton, and a sister, Estelle Ackerman. She was married Nov. 26, 1959, to John Paul McIntyre. Surviving are husband, John P. Hobert Payne PAYNESVILLE, W.Va. – Hobert Payne, age 87, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, at Paynesville. Born Nov. 20, 1917, in McDowell County, W.Va., he was the son of the late William Taylor and Clara Horne Payne. He was a lifelong resident of McDowell County, had lived in the Paynesville community for more than 50 years and had made his home with his daughter for the past three months. He was a member of the North Springs Old Regular Baptist Church and was a retired miner, having worked at Bartley No. 1 Mines in Bartley, W.Va., and at U.S. Steel No. 10 in Gary, W.Va. He was a member of District 17, Local Union 7635. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Orphie, Margie and Claucie, and five brothers, Homer, Junior, Cam, Jink and Joe. Mr. Porter was a longtime resident of Huntsville and graduated from Lee High School Class of 1973. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, achieving the rank of technical sergeant. Immediately after fulfilling military service, Mr. Porter enrolled at the University of Alabama-Huntsville, pursuing an engineering degree, where he achieved high scholastic honors. He was preceded in death by his father, 1st Sgt. Carl H. Porter, U.S. Army, Ret., and infant sister, Linda Porter of Coeburn. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Kane Porter; sister, Donna Porter; two brothers, Bobby Porter and James Porter; and brother-in-law, Stan Bacak, all of Huntsville. A memorial service was held Oct. 15, 2004, at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Huntsville, where Mr. Porter actively volunteered in an outreach program. Family and close friends attended the memorial service. Interment will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood, with the Reverend Fran McCoy officiating. Reva Shockley Reva Jane Quesenberry Shockley, age 91, born Jan. 8, 1913, to Walker W. Quesenberry and Laura Smith Quesenberry of Indian Valley in Floyd County, passed away Dec. 1, 2004, at Beverly Healthcare Blue Ridge in Galax. Mrs. Shockley was a devoted mother, housewife and farmer and was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Edgar Guy Shockley, her parents, a brother, Teddie W. Quesenberry, and a sister, Thelma E. Quesenberry. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Harold B. Cox of Hillsville; a son, Harold G.
