Sue Mae Beverly BRISTOL, Va. – Sue Mae Beverly, age 98, died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at her home. She was a native of Clintwood and moved to Bristol in 1942. She was a daughter of the late W.L. and Callie Hughes Phipps. She was a member of Valley View Baptist Church in Clintwood and attended Fellowship Chapel in Bristol Virginia. Mrs. Beverly worked at Universal Moulding Products in Bristol. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph W. Beverly; seven sisters, Vodna, Lou, Hester, Myrtle, Marie, Norma and Helen; and three brothers, Alfred, Corbett and Ottis. She is survived by a daughter, Zora Lopez of Pataskala, Ohio; two sons, David Beverly and Ray Beverly, both of Blountville; one brother, Ayers Phipps of Clintwood; 25 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Monday, Dec. 6, 2004, in the Akard Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Austin Cook officiating. Ralph Blizard, 85, passed away peacefully at his home Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, with his family by his side. He grew up in Kingsport and graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School, but resided most of his life in Blountville. Mr. Blizard was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II. He retired from the C.E. Division of Tennessee Eastman Company in 1980, with 39 years of service. Ralph received various awards for talent as a world class master fiddler, including the National Heritage Award presented by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Tennessee Governor’s Award for the Arts. He served on the Tennessee Arts Commission for five years and was co-founder of the Traditional Appalachian Music Heritage Association, an organization to preserve the musical heritage of the region. He supported the Friday Night Jam Sessions at Anderson House of Blountville and was a member of Blountville Presbyterian Church. Preceding him in death were his parents, Robert Houston and Jennie Willis Blizard, and two brothers, Aldrich Blizard and Roy Blizard. Surviving are his wife, Mildred Blizard, Blountville; two sons and daughters-in- law, David and Libby Blizard and Mark and Karen Blizard, all of Blountville; four grandchildren, Laura Blizard, Ryan Bos, Brittney Blizard and Erika Blizard; two sisters, Beatrice Moody, Concord, Va., and Joan Hinson, Cleveland, N.C.; one brother, Carl Blizard, Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews. She was a retired phlebotomy supervisor with the Bristol Regional Medical Center and was a member of the Bradley Street Baptist Church. Kiser, age 47, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, in the Russell County Medical Center. Born March 18, 1957, in Wise County, a son of the late Hobert T. Kiser and the late Pauline Mann Kiser, he had lived in Lebanon the past 30 years. He was a disabled employee of Lear Corporation in Lebanon and was of the Baptist faith. Paul McClellan Sr. BRISTOL, Va. – Paul Sevier McClellan Sr., age 77, passed away Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at his home. Paul was born June 13, 1927, in Bristol Tennessee, and was the son of the late Elbert Sevier McClellan and Lotus Pharon Agee. He was a lifelong resident of Bristol and graduated from Bristol Tennessee High School in 1945, where he actively participated in baseball and track during high school. At age 17, he volunteered for the U.S. Navy and served honorably. Paul attended King College in Bristol and played collegiate baseball. He received a B.S. degree in mathematics and physics from King College in 1950. After employment with H.P. King, Paul worked as a systems analyst for over 35 years for Sperry UNIVAC (UNISYS) and retired in 1987. Mr. McClellan was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed playing golf, bowling and tennis. He had been a member of State Street United Methodist Church for over 50 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Barbara Phyllis Grace McClellan. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Alan (Tamara) Ottinger of Blountville, Ms. Melinda Hobbs of Blountville and Mrs. Webster (Donna) Gilley Sr. of Bristol Tennessee; one son, Paul S. She had been employed by Tennessee Eastman, The Laundry Shop and Ballist Tourist Home and did volunteer work at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. She was a caregiver to many. Preceding her in death were her parents, Andrew Harlan and Martha Barton Salyer; two sisters, Bertha Ellen Field and Eda Mae Mitchell; five brothers, Ira Oliver Salyer, Carlos Harlan Salyer, Arnold Gilmer Salyer, Luther E. Salyer and Herbert Andrew Salyer; and several nieces and nephews. She is survived by son, Kenneth A. Smith, age 78, of 200 Georgia St., passed away on Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at his home, surrounded by his family. A native of Mountain City, James was born on Oct. 13, 1926, to the late William Hayes Smith and Stella Deal Smith. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Hannah Smith, Lelia Smith and Carrie Lewis. James was a retired sergeant first class Army veteran, having served in Vietnam. For his service, he was awarded a Good Conduct medal, Army Commendation medal, Bronze Star medal and Vietnam Service medal. He was also retired from IRC in Boone, N.C., and was the pastor of Zion Hill AME Zion Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Dimple Smith of the home; two sons, James A. A funeral Mass will be conducted at Saint Anne’s Catholic Church on Monday, Dec. 6, 2004, at noon, with Father Tim Keeney, celebrant, officiating, assisted by Rev. Mr. Harry Hall. Entombment will be in Saint Anne’s Mausoleum. Visitation will be Monday 10 until 11:45 a.m. at Saint Anne’s Catholic Church. Pallbearers will be Jeff Leonard, Derik Smith, Ryan Lekan, Jim Sorah, Tony White, Freddie Ball and Jason Watson. Honorary pallbearers will be Jordan Marsh, Austin Lekan, Marisa Abelseth and GTCDA Dart League. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to the American Diabetes Association, Tennessee Affiliate, 4205 Hillsboro Road, Suite 200, Nashville, TN 37215; the National Kidney Foundation of East Tennessee, P.O. Box 1135, Blountville, TN 37617; or the Wellmont Hospice House, 280 Steele’s Road, Bristol, TN 37620.
