David Caris Cress CALHOUN, Ga. – Elder David Caris Cress, age 47, died Thursday, Dec. 2, following a plane crash in Collegedale, Tenn., that claimed the life of David and three other church officials. Dave was born in High Point, N.C., Aug. 22, 1957, son of Charles C. Cress and the late Mary Kathryn Moore Cress. He had lived in Calhoun since 1986 and was a very respected leader in our community. Elder David Caris Cress loved life and he loved people, especially young people. It began one summer as he served as a counselor at a summer camp. That summer changed the course of his life. Dave changed his major from business/communications and went into youth ministry. Dave had many gifts. Not only was he an excellent administrator as president of the Georgia-Cumberland Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, but Dave was a master affirmer, an encourager and possessed an incredible ability to infuse fun into any situation. He was able to remember, not only a person’s name, but enough pertinent information about each one, as well as family members, that each came to know that they were truly loved and valued. David began his ministry in the Florida Conference of Seventh-day Adventists upon completing his master of divinity from the Theological Seminary at Andrew’s University in Berrien Springs, Mich. He began his ministry in Orlando, Florida as youth pastor of the Florida Hospital church, where he also met and married his wife, Lynn Bandel. He later became pastor of the Pompano/Plantation District. Dave’s passion for youth led him to return to youth ministry as the youth director for the Georgia-Cumberland Conference in 1986, which resulted in he and his wife Lynn, moving from his pastorate in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to Calhoun. As camp director, Dave believed that the camp experience was more than just fun activities. He believed it was one of the best forms of evangelizing young people and introducing them to Jesus. As Dave once said, "The campfire programs are designed for more than just ‘hoot’n and holler’n and singing traditional camp songs. Campfires are designed to teach values, show the joys of Christianity, build positive memories, and lead campers to a commitment to Jesus Christ." Dave so distinguished himself, administratively, that he was called on to serve as the conference vice president/secretary in 1995, a position he held until he was asked to be president in 2002, the position he held until he tragically died in a plane crash this past Thursday, along with three other leaders of the Georgia-Cumberland Conference and the pilot. Dave is survived by wife, Lynn Bandel Cress of Calhoun, and daughter, Meredith. He is also survived by his father, Charles C. Cress of Chattanooga; brother, James A. Cress of Rockville, Md., and brother, John C. Cress of College Place, Wash. Memorial services will be conducted Tuesday, Dec. 7, at 2 p.m. at the Dalton Trade and Convention Center in Dalton, Ga. Dave never lost his love for the youth and tirelessly worked to further any cause that would put the youth of the church in the forefront. His latest passion and project was the construction of a worship center for the students of Georgia-Cumberland Academy. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions will help fulfill Dave’s dream of providing that worship center for the students and congregation of the Georgia-Cumberland Academy Church. Donations may be sent to the Georgia-Cumberland Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, P.O. Box 12000, Calhoun, GA, 30703. Friends may call at the Honaker Funeral Home after 6 p.m. Monday. James H. Frost Elder James H. Frost was everybody’s friend. He always had a smile on his face and time for everyone. He made each person he came into contact with feel special and loved. Jim’s passion was leading those he loved to the Lord. His life reflected the unconditional love of God. Jim loved having fun. He loved to travel, discover new things, play jokes on the unsuspecting, read, relax, spend time with friends, family and with Cindy, the love of his life. Jim and Cindy were devoted to the ministry. It all started way back in England at the age of 13, when Jim preached for the first time in his home church. He wowed the crowd of seven and a pastor was born. Jim attended Newbold College in England before getting a call to teach English in Guatemala. He couldn’t resist the chance to travel and make new friends, so he headed out on a new adventure. At the end of his year there, he went to Columbia Union College in Takoma Park, Md., where he completed his college studies. He was called to Cincinnati as a youth pastor under Elder Peter Read. Jim completed his master of divinity from the Theological Seminary at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Mich. He was called to the Potomac Conference as pastor, where he served for 10 years. Jim left the Potomac Conference to serve in another aspect of ministry, as the hospital chaplain at Emory Adventist Hospital in Smyrna, Ga. He felt a special bond with patients and staff members as he ministered there. Next, came the ministry in Albany, Ga., where he and Cindy became very involved in the community and it’s needs. During this time, Jim and his daughter, Brittany, would look forward to going to camp at Cohutta Springs, where he was camp pastor. It was at this camp one summer where Brittany gave her life to the Lord, with family and friends present. On to Gainesville, Ga., where Jim pastored four churches. It wasn’t long until he was called to Calhoun to be the ministerial director for the Central Region, from Atlanta to Chattanooga. Jim’s administrative gifts and his love for those he came in contact with, led him to be called to serve as conference vice- president/secretary, his current position, until he tragically died in a plane crash this past Thursday, along with three other leaders of the Georgia-Cumberland Conference and the pilot. Jim is survived by his wife, Cindy of Calhoun, and daughter, Brittany of Manteno, Ill. He is also survived by his parents, Jim and Joan, and his sisters, Sandra, Wendy, Lorraine and Carol, all who reside in England. Memorial services will be conducted Tuesday, Dec. 7, at 2 p.m. at the Dalton Trade and Convention Center in Dalton.
