Born in Smyth County, Va., on Jan. 21, 1921, he was the son of the late Thomas Claiborne and Sarah Malissa Bishop. He was preceded in death by his wife of 31 years, Opal Berry Bishop, as well as two brothers, and three sisters. Mr. Bishop was an active lifetime member of the MountainView United Methodist Church, currently serving on the Board of Trustees. He was a 1939 graduate of Chilhowie High School. He attended Johnson City Business College, before serving in the U.S. Army as a medic during World War II. He was a member of the Smyth County VFW. Mr. Bishop was the owner and manager of Berry Iron & Metal. He was a member of the Chilhowie Fire Department for 57 years, serving as fire chief for 31 years. He was also a charter member of the Chilhowie Lions Club and served on the Chilhowie Town Council from 1962 through 1982. Survivors include a daughter, Pamela Bishop Boswell and son-in-law, William C. Boswell Jr. of Chilhowie; a son, Thomas Berry Bishop and daughter-in-law, Kyra Kegley Bishop of Chilhowie; three granddaughters, Christy Boswell Bailey and husband Jack, Charlotte, N.C., Sally Gwen Boswell, Charlotte and Leslie Michelle Bishop, Chicago; two grandsons, William Thomas Boswell, Christiansburg, Va., and Thomas Berry Bishop Jr., Chilhowie; sister, Dorothy Bishop MacRae, Dickson, Tenn.; brother-in-law and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Byrum Ray Berry, Abingdon; sister- in-law, Mrs. Kelly Berry, Chilhowie; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Aline Hyden Brooks KINGSPORT – Aline Hyden Brooks, age 80, passed away late Friday evening, Dec. 17, 2004, at her home surrounded by her children, after a full life. Mrs. Brooks was born in Lee County, Va., and had resided in Kingsport most of her adult life. She was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church. Mrs. Brooks was a loving mother and friend to all who knew her. She was a gifted seamstress and designer. She was a member of the Pandora Dance Club and various square dance clubs. Throughout her life, she participated in various charitable organizations. She could always make you smile with her quick wit and humor. Her husband, Lamar S. Brooks, her parents, Charles E. and Sarah Elizabeth Biggs Hyden, five sisters, Lucille Foster, Charcie Bradley, Irene Shoemaker, Blanche Hammonds and Ruby Cheek, one brother, James Hyden, and a dear friend, Roy Cheek, preceded her in death. George was a former chief of police in the Town of Lebanon, a former member of the Lebanon Town Council and had served two terms as mayor of Lebanon. He was a U.S. Marine veteran of World War II, a member of the Patton-Crosswhite VFW Post 6975, and a life member of the DAV. As a young man, he played and coached baseball in the Burley Belt League. A Democrat, he loved politics and was a New York Yankee fan. He was a member of the Lebanon Baptist Church. Since his retirement, he had been dedicated to visiting the sick and managing West Hill Cemetery in Lebanon. He will be greatly missed by his wife, family, friends and the resident of the Town of Lebanon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Daniel T. Thomas and Jack Thomas, an infant sister, and a grandson, Jeffery Scott Warner. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Mabel Robinson Thomas; daughter, Cheryl T. Moss and husband Ron, Windsor, Va.; son, George P. (Spunky) Thomas Jr., Abingdon; daughter, Pamela T. Atwell, Abingdon; three sisters, Helen T. Hughes, Lincoln Park, Mich., Loretta Jenks, Bristol Virginia, and Florine Parks, Cleveland, Va.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Tom Edwards officiating. Van Nostrand BRISTOL, Tenn. – Anne W. Van Nostrand, 67, died Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, at her home. She was born in Hickory, N.C., a daughter of the late James W. and Annie Mae Robinson Woodside, and was a graduate of Fred T. Ford High School and Meredith College in Raleigh. She served as a home demonstration agent in Richmond, Va., and taught schools in Bristol Virginia and Bristol Tennessee, before retiring after 25 years with the State of Tennessee Department of Children Services. She was a deacon at First Presbyterian Church, had served as president of the Bluff City Middle School PTA, the Bristol Swim Association and the North East Tennessee State Employees Association. She was den mother of Cub Scout Pack 113 and 106, and was a committee member at Troop 3. Her two sons were Eagle Scouts. Her proudest accomplishment was having three children who were college graduates and happily married. She loved and cherished her eight grandchildren. Survivors include her husband of 43 years, Herbert N. Van Nostrand III; a daughter, Dr. Rebecca St. Jean and her husband Rob of Cross Lanes, W.Va.; two sons, H. Norman Van Nostrand IV and his wife Lisa of Byhalia, Miss., and James W. "Woody" Van Nostrand and his wife Elizabeth of Spartanburg, S.C.; three granddaughters, Elizabeth Van Nostrand, Kathleen Van Nostrand and Kathlyn St. Jean; five grandsons, Gaib Van Nostrand, Adam Van Nostrand, Aaron Van Nostrand, Jacob St. Jean and Wesley St. Jean. Walter Delano Williams Walter Delano "Buddy" Williams, formerly of Bristol Virginia and Monroe, Mich., passed away on Dec. 17, 2004, in Jacksonville, Fla., after a lengthy illness. He was born April 17, 1933, in Tazewell, Tenn., a son to the late Bryan and Eula Gray Williams. He was the owner and operator of W.W. Automotive in Jacksonville for over 20 years. Walter was also a decorated veteran of the Korean conflict, serving with the 82nd Airborne Division and Company I, 31st infantry regiment.
