James Walker Burgess CHILHOWIE – Mr. James Walker Burgess, age 67, passed away Dec. 17, 2004, at Russell County Medical Center. Mr. Burgess was owner-operator of Riverside Exxon Service Center in Chilhowie, until his retirement, and a life member of the Chilhowie Fire Department. He served several years as chairman of the Chilhowie Apple Festival and worked many years with the youth of Chilhowie Peanut Football and Little League Programs. He was a retired member of the Chilhowie Lions Club and a member of the Chilhowie Methodist Church. Mr. Burgess was preceded in death by his parents, William (Bill) and Fannye Walker Burgess, granddaughter, Amber Lynn Morrison, and a nephew, Preston Harris. He is survived by his loving wife, Patsy Harris Burgess; two daughters and son- in law, Sandra Jo Lane and Warren Lee Morrison, Hickory, N.C., and Gina Hamm, Conover, N.C.; one granddaughter, Leanna Morrison, Hickory; one sister and brother-in-law, Rebecca Sue and Robert Harris, Saltville; one nephew, Dr. Robert M. "Bob" Clark, age 72, a former resident of Bristol Tennessee, died in Norfolk, Va., Saturday Dec. 18, 2004. He was a native of Sullivan County and son of the late Jessie and Margaret Chapman Clark. He was a retired welder and a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Betty B. Clark; sisters, Betty Jean Tester, Bristol Tennessee, Edna Pence, Bristol Virginia, Neva Sturgill, Bristol Tennessee, and Mary L. Ardis Lane Griffin BRISTOL, Va. – Ardis Lane Griffin, age 88, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County, Va., and was a daughter of the late Holbert and Ethel Smith Leonard. She was a homemaker and a member of Willow Branch Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher for many years. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Maynard Earl Lane, her second husband, Virgil Griffin, one daughter, Freida McMurray, one son, Gary Lane, two grandsons, Landon Lane and Stephen Leonard, one great-grandson, Austin Leonard, two sisters, and three brothers. Trivett GREEN COVE, Va. – Ernest S. "Earn" Trivett, age 90, passed away Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, at his residence. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Va., and was the son of the late Conley and Clara Trivett. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II and was a retired employee from the Washington County, Va., School System, working as a bus driver and later as a custodian. Mr. Trivett was a member of the Green Cove Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Trivett and Raymond Trivett. Doris Gay Wallace HONAKER – Doris Gay Wallace, 56, passed away Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004, unexpectedly at her home, due to an apparent heart attack. Born March 5, 1948, in Russell County, Va., she was the daughter of Hazel Childress Johnson and the late Roy Johnson. Doris was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and daughter. She never met a stranger and will be loved and missed by everyone. She belonged to the Countess Rebekah Lodge No. 31 of Honaker. Preceding her in death, in addition to her father, are three brothers, Earl, Danny and Raymond Johnson, all from Honaker. Wallace; two daughters, Denise Barton and husband Donavan of Honaker and Joy Stanley and husband Wayne of Rosedale, Va.; one son, Jefferey Wallace of the home; three grandchildren, Dustin Barton, Lyndsey Barton and Matthew Stanley; three brothers, Ernie Johnson and wife Margie of Tazewell, Va., Eddie Johnson of Honaker and Roger Johnson of Wytheville; four sisters, Geraldine Ray and husband Dewey of Swords Creek, Va., Sue Shortridge and Jeanette Coxton, both of Tazewell, and Ann Smith of Honaker; and numerous nieces and nephew also survive. Pallbearers will be Terry Ray, Jerry Ray, Mike Ray, Allen Smith, Dewayne Stinson and Chris Wallace. Honorary pallbearers will be Ricky Lee, Eric Snead, Shannon Harris, Jamie Stinson and Jeff Ray. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 21, at 11 a.m. at Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ancil Childress and Rev. Vonley Pruitt officiating. Interment will follow at Russell Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 20, at Honaker Funeral Home.
