Mabel Wood, 86, Big Stone Gap James Barnett CEDAR BLUFF, Va. – James (Eddie) Barnett, age 70, passed away Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, in a Bristol Tennessee hospital, following a brief illness. Born July 3, 1934, in Tazewell County, Va., he was the son Jannie Altizer Barnett of Bandy, Va., and the late James Daniel Barnett. He was a retired coal miner for Island Creek Coal Corporation VP No. 3 Mine and a member of UMWA. He was a member of El Bethel House of God Church at Baptist Valley. Eddie was also a member of the Black Diamond Coon Hunting Association. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Billie Jean Milam Barnett; two sons, Eddie (Junior) Barnett and wife Tammy of Bean Station, Tenn., and Gary Franklin Barnett and wife Amanda of Cedar Bluff; four daughters, Jannie Ann Nicewander and husband Jerry, Roseanna Helton and husband Tim and Connie Conley and husband Steve, all of Cedar Bluff, and Sparkle Whitley and husband Don of Dover, Del.; six brothers, Sammy Barnett and wife Connie of Baptist Valley, Bliss Barnett and wife Ella Jean of Wytheville, Russell Barnett and wife Sue and Woodrow Barnett and wife Lynn, all of Baptist Valley, Jerry Barnett and wife Wanda and Rocky Barnett and wife Joyce, all of Bandy; four sisters, Ella Cole and husband Roy of Bandy, Ester Beavers and husband Walter of Baptist Valley, Cynthia Wright and husband Wayne and Sparkle Bonds and husband James, all of Bandy; 13 grandchildren, Timothy James Brown, Angie Renne Brown, Jacob Lee Brown, James Edward (Little Eddie) Barnett, Anthony Helton, Brandon Barnett, Klyle Whitley, Brittany Whitley, Mikhaela Whitley, Joshua Whitley, Cassidy Whitley, Melanie Barnett and Chelsea Barnett; one great-grandchild, Mallory Grace Helton; and several uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews also survive. N.C., and was the first child of the late Luke and Joy Freeman Woodbury. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Luke Woodbury Jr. and a sister, Katherine Woodbury. She graduated in 1936 from Virginia Intermont College in Bristol Virginia and then graduated in 1939 from the Peabody Conservatory, with degrees in concert piano from both schools. Nelle married John Isaac Barron in 1942. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Morganton. Mrs. Barron was the Sweetheart of the Rotary Clubs in Bristol, Tennessee/Virginia and Morganton. Nelle was a member of the Burke County Historical Society and the Morganton Music Club. She is survived by her husband, Dr. John I. Barron Sr. of the home; a daughter, Dr. Janice Rushing and husband, Dr. Lige Rushing of Dallas; sons, John I. Barron Jr. of Morganton and William Ellis Barron and wife Tehreema Mitka Barron of Bethesda, Md.; grandchildren, Raven Moria Barron, Sarah Marieko Barron, Caitlin Nelle Barron, Isaac Woodbury Barron and Maheyaar Ellis Barron; a brother, Carl Woodbury and wife Ruth, of Indianapolis; a sister, Joyce Woodbury of Augusta, Ga.; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Barron of Bristol Tennessee; and a number of nieces and nephews. Born in Buchanan County, Sept. 11, 1941, he was the son of the late William P. Owens and Etta Holbrook Owens. He attended the University of Virginia, Radford College, Virginia Polytechnic Institute State University and Hiwassee College. He was a graduate of East Tennessee State University, where he received his B.S. degree. Reverend Owens had formerly worked with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, former employee of the Buchanan County School Board, former employee of the United Company, where he served as senior vice-president of Human Resources. He devoted many years of community service to Buchanan County and surrounding communities. Had served on numerous boards for the advancement of Buchanan County and surrounding areas. Former chairman of the John Flannagan Water Authority, former vice-chairman and county planner for Buchanan County Board of Supervisors, former chairman for Buchanan County Library Board, former member and secretary of the Cumberland Plateau Planning District Commission, former member of the Buchanan County Public Service Authority, former member of the Governor’s Private Industry Council, former member of Buchanan County School Board 6-year Plan Committee, and served as former chairman for the Buchanan County Democrat Party and served as vice-chairman for the Ninth District Democratic Committee, former member of the Southwest Virginia Economic Development Commission, past president of Grundy Rotary Club, past president Buchanan County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, former member of Area Manpower Planning Council, former chairman of Buchanan County Fair Committee, former member of the Board of Directors of the Willowbrook Country Club, was former member of the Board Directors Big Sandy Coal Mining Institute, former chairman for Buchanan County Red Cross Board of Directors, former chairman Buchanan County March of Dimes Fund Drive, past board member of the Buchanan County YMCA Board, former chairman of Virginia Coalfield Economic Development Authority Board, former member of the Commission on the Future of Southwest Virginia, served on the Town of Grundy Flood Task Force and former chairman of Buchanan County Electronic Task Force Board, former chairman of Virginia Coalfield Economic Development Authority Board. Gary Brian Whitt Sr. MAVISDALE, Va. – Mr. Gary Brian Whitt Sr., age 36, passed away Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, at a Buchanan County, Va., hospital, following a brief illness. Born in Tazewell, County, Va., he was the son of Annis Meadows Whitt of Richlands and the late Omer Whitt. He was a mechanic for Gasco. He was of the Pentecostal faith. He is survived by his wife, Mary Mullins Whitt; his mother, Annis Meadows Whitt and fiancé, Delmer Cox of Richlands; one daughter, Rhonda "Beth" Elizabeth Whitt of the home; two sons, Gary Brian Whitt Jr. and Bradley Paul Stephen Whitt, both of the home; one brother, Gregory Whitt of Vansant; one sister, Greta Reynolds and husband Earl of Swords Creek.
