Born in Buchanan County, Va., she was the daughter of the late James F. and Josie Webb. She retired from Mattie Williams Hospital dietary department. She was a member of the Richlands Tabernacle Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lenward Charles Ball, on Dec. 29, 1998, and by five sisters, Hettie Wade, Edgar Short, Ida Ball, Elsie Richardson and Beulah Richardson, and two brothers, Major Webb and Charlie Webb. She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Samuel (Shirley) Smith of Glen Allen, Mrs. Hobert (Phyllis) Stilwell of North Tazewell, Mrs. Roger (Sue) Newberry and Mrs. Ronald (Judy) Bales, all of Richlands, and Mrs. Marvin (Connie) Houchins of Pendleton, S.C.; three sons, Ronnie Ball and wife Lillian of Graham, N.C., Donnie Ball and wife Linda of Greensboro, N.C., and Dean Ball and wife Louise of Cedar Bluff; two sisters, Ethel Deskins of Cedar Bluff and Jettie Rose of Raven; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and two step- great-grandchildren also survive. Barbara Ann Browning CEDAR BLUFF – Mrs. Barbara Ann Browning, age 76, passed away Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, in a Lebanon hospital, following a lengthy illness. Born in Charleston, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late James and Essie Marie Dailey Forbes. She was a member of the Belfast United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Rodney Browning, two brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Walter Browning; three daughters, Mrs. Uneeda Vandyke, Mrs. Beth Ann Butcher and Mrs. Letha Hill, all of Belfast; one son, Allen Scott Browning and wife Pamela of Oakwood; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and special nephew, Bruce Forbes, also survive. Jerrell Edward Carmody BRISTOL, Tenn. – Jerrell Edward Carmody, 65, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004. Jerrell was born on Aug. 14, 1939, in Bristol Virginia, to the late Roy and Mary Wilson Carmody. He lived in the greater Bristol area most all his life and attended church at the Throne of Grace Baptist Church. He was an retired employee of East Tennessee Office Supply in Johnson City and a member of the Johnson City Noon Lions Club. Mr. Carmody served his country in the U.S. Army. Born in Buchanan County, July 29, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Marvin Stiltner and Maxie Lee Davis Stiltner. She was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing and making quilts, a member of the Stateline Free Pentecostal Church of God, devoted Christian and loved going to church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Matthew Chaffins, and two sisters, Shelby Jean Chaffins and Evelyn Jo Ann Stiltner. She is survived by five daughters, Shirley Ann Chaffins of Marvin, Va., Linda Sue Blair of Salyersville, Ky., Brenda Bailey of Abingdon, Reatha Faye Ratliff of Mouthcard and Connie Evelyn Charles of Meadowview; five sons, Ronnie Lee Chaffins of Mouthcard, Dannie Matt Chaffins of Salyersville, Ky., David Randall Chaffins of Mouthcard, Lucky Eugene Chaffins of Salyersville and Billy Dean Chaffins of Mouthcard; and one brother, Billy Eugene Stiltner of Las Vegas, Nev. Sarah Nell Jones BLOUNTVILLE – Sarah Nell Jones, age 73, of 229 Ben Jones Pvt. Drive, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004, at the Indian Path Medical Center Hospital, following a lengthy illness. She was a native of Georgia, but has lived most all of her life in Tennessee, and the past five to six years in Bluff City. Mrs. Jones was a daughter of the late Grover John and Louise Shubert Ray, and a member of the Blountville Christian Church. She graduated early, at the age of 16, from Science Hill High School, Johnson City. She was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Grady A. Jones, a son, Alan D. Jones, one daughter, Rebecca Jones, two great- grandchildren, Leland and Sarah Woomer, two sisters and three brothers. Survivors include: three daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Lon Gene Leonard, of Bluff City, Mary and Eric Acuff, of Blountville and Karen Jones Reynolds and Jeffrey Reynolds, of Woodstock, Ga.; one son, Michael Jones, Knoxville; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and eight step-grandchildren; one sister, Jo Ann Shipley, Atlanta; special friend, Mae Pierson; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Mrs. Paynter was born and raised in Cape Charles, Va. She attended Old Dominion University in Norfolk and graduated from Richmond Professional Institute, now Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. She was a medical technologist for over 40 years, before retiring. Mr. and Mrs. Paynter moved to Urbanna in 1974. Mrs. Paynter was the widow of James R. Paynter. She is survived by their daughter, Rosemary Nerschl and her husband, Karl of Urbanna; two stepsons, James R. Paynter Jr. and his wife Martha of Roanoke, Va., and John F. Paynter and his wife Roberta of Arvonia, Va.; her brother, Everette E. Fuqua and his wife Carolyn of Abingdon; four nephews, Harry E. Fuqua II and his wife Diane of Los Angeles, Everette Fuqua III of Los Angeles, John Dennis of Potomac, Md., and David Dennis and his wife Grace of Manassas, Va.; and one niece, Elizabeth Ann Laing and her husband Edward of Reno, Nev. Shirley Ruth Puckett LEBANON – Shirley Ruth Puckett, 66, passed away on Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, at Russell County Medical Center in Lebanon. Born in Liberty, N.Y., on June 18, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Forest Dean and Thelma T. Brown Miller. She was a member of Lebanon Memorial United Methodist Church and was dearly loved by the church family. In addition to her parents, her husband, Kemper Gilmer Puckett, and one son, Richard Honaker, also precede her in death. Hester Moore Swindall CLINTWOOD, Va. – Hester Moore Swindall, age 80, went home to the Lord on Dec. 20, 2004, at the home of her daughter, Brenda McClellan in Abingdon. Her parents, Enoch and Meda Mullins Moore, preceded her in death, as did her husband, Bruce Swindall, and baby, Jerry Swindall. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Alonzo, Bascom, Cermit, Dixie, Edgal, Fannie, Gustava and Ison. She was baptized on Oct. 13, 1963, and was a member of Georges Fork Freewill Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years. Her attitude during her illness was, "I’ll be alright no matter what happens." She is survived by her daughter, Brenda McClellan of Abingdon; son-in-law, Roger McClellan of Sterling, Va.; son, Douglas Swindall and daughter-in-law, Cathy Dolinger Swindall of Abingdon; granddaughter, Laura McClellan of Herndon, Va.; and sister, Jeanette Bittinger of Bluff City. Avanel Wilson BLOUNTVILLE – Virginia Avanel "Ann" Taylor Wilson, 72, died Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, at Indian Path Medical Center in Kingsport. She was born in Scott County, Va., a daughter of the late Isaac and Ollie Shaffer Taylor, and spent most of her life in Sullivan County, Tenn., as a homemaker. She extended friendliness and hospitality to everyone she met and will be missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth W. Wilson, in October of this year, two sisters, Sylvia Ann Taylor and Mary Browder, and two brothers, J.W. Taylor and Joe Taylor. Survivors include a sister, Effie Mullins of Blountville; a brother, Stanley Taylor of Kingsport; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Gladys Carrico.
