Anderson MARION – Thelma C. Anderson, age 86, passed away Friday, Dec. 24, 2004, in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. Survivors and funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Bradley’s Funeral Home, Marion. Richard E. Ashley ABINGDON – Richard E. Ashley, age 61, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, at the VA Medical Center, in Mountain Home, Tenn., after a brief illness. He was a native of Washington D.C. Mr. Ashley served in the U.S. Army as a MP with the 503rd out of Fort Bragg, N.C. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart for service during the Dominican Uprising. He attended the Shady Grove United Methodist Church of Abingdon and the Green Cove Baptist Church of Green Cove, Va. He was a son of the late James R. "J. D." Ashley Jr. Survivors left to cherish his memory are his mother, Edith Blevins Ashley; four sisters, Jacqueline Dolores Spiegler and her husband William, Carrolyn Jean Ashley and Patricia Elaine Baker, all of Abingdon, and Leslee Karen Joseph and her husband F. Thomas, of Manassas, Va; three brothers, Harry Leon Ashley and his wife Gloria, of Traverse, Mich., Edwin Delane Ashley Sr. and wife Cassandra, of Abingdon and Bryan Keith Ashley and his wife Carmen, of Bristol Virginia; 17 nephews and nieces; 20 great-nephews and great-nieces; many aunts, uncles and cousins; and very special friends, Paula Hill and Randall and Arlene Brooks. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 27, 2004, in the Green Cove Baptist Church with Rev. Charles E. "Jody" Blevins officiating. The body will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Military graveside service will follow in the Green Cove Baptist Church Cemetery, with military rites accorded by the Highlands Fellowship Veterans Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Robert Scott Baker, Edwin D. Ashley Jr., Jeffrey D. Blevins, Chris Howington, Thomas L. Waters, III and Carl McKinney. Nicholas Joe DiRienze Sr. JEWELL RIDGE, Va. – Mr. Nicholas Joe DiRienzo Sr. of the Bearwallow section, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, in a Reidsville, N.C., hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born in Buffalo, N.Y., and was a son of the late Crienzo and Margaret Thomasula DiRienzo, Italy natives. He lived in the New York area most of his life, before moving to Bearwallow 20 years ago, and was a retired electrician for the Suffolk County Jail. Nick was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and was of the Catholic faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Cecellia Pruitt DiRienzo, one sister, Rose Vella, and two brothers, Krist and Michael DiRienzo. Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Margaret "Marty" Hall-Peters of Stokesdale, N.C., Mrs. Gloria Brennan of Madison, N.C., and Mrs. Debbie Sola of Madison; one son, Mr. Nicholas Joe DiRienzo Jr. of Long Island, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren also survive.
