Deborah Lynn Pendergrass, 50, Bristol Virginia Dora May Abel STEELSBURG, Va. – Mrs. Dora May Abel, age 81, passed away Friday, Dec. 24, 2004, in a Richlands hospital following a brief illness. Born in Ipswich, England, she was the daughter of the late Horace W. and Margaret Finbow. She was a professional seamstress in England and served in the British Ladies Land Army during World War II. She married her husband of 59 years, Otis J. Abel, on Aug. 18, 1945, and moved to Tazewell County, Va., a couple of years later. She became an American citizen in 1974, was a member of the Steelsburg United Methodist Church and a past member of the Steelsburg Homemakers Club. Mrs. Abel is survived by her husband, Otis J. Abel; one daughter, Karen A. Webb and husband Roger of Claypool Hill, Va.; one son, David Wayne Abel and wife Robin of Burke’s Garden, Va.; one brother, Horace William Finbow and wife Audrey of Ipswich; nieces, Glennis Fisk and Susan Finbow; nephews, Gary Finbow and David Finbow, all of Ipswich; close relatives, John and Rose Godfrey of Ipswich; special friends, Gary, Narcie and Butch Knepper, Sandra Helton Anderson; and a host of friends and neighbors also survive. Crawford Jr. TAZEWELL, Va. – John Kinzer Crawford Jr., age 65, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004, at his home. Born May 1, 1939, in Buchanan County, Va., he was the son of Lois Pruett Crawford of Tazewell, Va., and the late John Kinzer Crawford Sr. He was of the Christian faith and a member of the Tazewell Christian Church. Mr. Crawford was a certified master watchmaker and a 40-year member of the American Watchmaker’s Institute. Mr. Crawford established Crawford Jewelers on Main Street in Tazewell in May 1964, as successor to the H.W. Pobst Jewelers, where he "kept on ticking" for 30 years, retiring in 1994 due to health reasons. He was a 1957 graduate of Grundy High School and also graduated from several technical curricular throughout his long and distinguished career as a watchmaker and jeweler on Tazewell’s Main Street. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one son, Gregory John Crawford, and one sister, Rita Wright. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife of 47 years, Laura Davis Crawford; two sons, Kenneth Allen Crawford and Charles Gardner Crawford and fiancée, Margaret Kline, all of Pittsburgh; one grandson, Kristopher Allen Crawford; and two granddaughters, Laura Katherine Crawford and Emily Elizabeth Crawford, all of Pittsburgh; foster daughter, Nelan Kuon of Phoenix, Ariz.; one brother-in-law, Edward B. Lumina Ave., and formerly of Jacksonville, N.C., died peacefully at her home early Friday morning, Dec. 24, surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 27, at Trinity United Methodist Church, where she was an active member until moving to Wrightsville Beach. Rev. Alice Quarles will officiate. Burial will follow in Onslow Memorial Park. Trish was born in Beckley, W.Va., on March 12, 1938, the daughter of the late Louise Davis Stuart and Alexander Gordon Stuart. She attended Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley, W.Va., where she was an honor’s student and held many school offices. After graduating from Woodrow Wilson, Trish attended Greenbrier College in Lewisburg, W.Va. At Greenbrier, Trish held many honors: president of the Student Government Association, a member of the Zeta Mu Epsilon Sorority and a member of the Greenbriettes, the college choir. She also had the honor of representing Greenbrier College in the Queen Shenondoah XXXI Court. Her most prestigious honor, however, was the Janie Price Loving Cup Award, the annual President’s Award for leadership. After graduating from Greenbrier, Trish attended East Carolina University, where she continued to be a school leader, president of Cotton Dormitory, president of Garrett Dormitory, was selected to be a member of the Women’s Judiciary Senate and selected to represent her sorority, Kappa Delta on the Inter-sorority Council. Trish’s most prestigious award at East Carolina University was her selection as "Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities," an honor in recognition of her many accomplishments as a student at the University. Upon graduating from East Carolina University with a degree in early childhood education, she began a distinguished career in education with the Camp Lejeune Dependents’ Schools. She touched many children’s lives for over 30 years and will be remembered by many students as the teacher that motivated and gave them the "Don’t give up attitude." After her retirement with the Lejeune School System, she began a short, but most successful career, with the Onslow County School System as a reading recovery teacher. Once again, her talents in teaching reading will be remembered by not only her students, but her peers as well. Trish was very talented in teaching reading and she shared her knowledge and expertise with many educators. Her love of teaching will always touch many lives. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Franck of Jacksonville, N.C., and her sister, Mary Louise Stuart of Lewes, Del. She is survived by her two wonderful and loving sons, John Martin Franck and his wife Argie Saffo Franck and Robert Stuart Franck and his wife Susan Allen Franck, all of Wilmington, N.C. She leaves behind four delightful grandchildren, Katherine Patricia Franck, John Robert Franck and Reed Saffo Franck, children of John and Argie Franck, and Brodie Bain Franck, son of Stuart and Suzy Franck. He had been employed by Valleydale Meats for many years and retired from the Hamilton Meat Company in Johnson City, Tenn. Raymond was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was born in Buchanan County, Va., and was a son of the late Eli and Minnie Sutherland Horn, both Buchanan County natives. He was a lifelong resident of the Whitewood area, was a retired miner with Mary E. Coal Company and a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local Union No. 7327 at Jewell Valley, Va. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Helen Irene Horn, two sons, Larry Lee Horn and James Scott Horn, three grandsons, Larry Lloyd Horn, Kenneth Lee Moses and Larry Wayne Moses, one sister, Katherine Clifton, four brothers, Carlos, Paul, Millard and Elmer Horn, also, two infant brothers. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Survivors are: two daughters, Mrs. "Joyce" Moses and husband Wayne of Gladys, Va., and Mrs. Darlene Coleman and husband Mike of Pounding Mill, Va.; two sons, Mr. Gary Horn of Cedar Bluff and Mr. Clark Horn and wife Judy of Whitewood; nine grandchildren; and 14 great- grandchildren. He was born on May 6, 1921, in Pentacre, W.Va., a son of the late Robert Lee and America Elizabeth Jarrett Wilkinson. He was also preceded in death by a sister and seven brothers, He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years and was a member of the Church of God in Cedar Grove, W.Va. He retired from the Sullivan County School System in 1974, having taught 22 years at Bluff City High School, Mary Hughes High School and Sullivan East High School.
