Buckles BIG STONE GAP, Va. – Just as he came into the world in a big way, weighing 12 pounds at birth, Robert Claiborne Buckles, 71, left this realm and entered Heaven on Monday, Dec. 27, 2004. A faithful husband and father, Bob, (as he was most often known), blessed all who knew him. Traveling to many countries... Cuba, Africa, Jamaica, Guatemala and Mexico...his ventures were more than just vacations. It was Bob's heart to share the gospel of Jesus Christ to everyone he knew, having a particular burden for indigenous people. The last two years of his life on earth were spent battling disease that sought to ravage his body. Though his body bore those scars, his spirit never wavered, as he continued to lead people to Jesus. Bob served his country proudly as a member of the U.S. Air Force in Waco, Texas. It was there that he met his first wife, Thalia Ann Burnell, the mother of daughter, Tracy. Following her death in 1962, Bob was blessed three years later to meet and marry his wife of 39 ½ years, Mary Faye Fowler, mother of daughter, Dawn. A lifelong athlete, having played sports in high school and later at Emory & Henry College, it was this kind of discipline that influenced his life and that of his family. Bob exemplified the adage, "when the going gets tough, the tough get going." Many people would not know that singing was also a part of Bob's life. In his teens, he sang with the "Southlanders," later lending his voice to the praise and worship of God as a member of East Stone Gap United Methodist Church. Since 1978, Bob was actively involved in his church community. Because of his commitment to his church family and to missions, his family requests that any donations be contributed to the Robert C. Buckles Memorial Mission Fund at East Stone Gap United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 186, Big Stone Gap, VA 24219. Visitation will be held at his church on Thursday, Dec. 30, from 5-8 p.m., with service following. Interment will be on Friday at 11 a.m. at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.
