Born on Oct. 29, 1929, Jack was a son of the late Andrew Jackson "Andy" Arrington and Nannie Sutherland Arrington. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Page Thomas Arrington, three sisters, Betty Hawthorne, Leona McAmis and Buenos Cornett. Jack was a resident of the Lodi Community in Washington County and was a "ole time" farmer and believed in the "ole time" way of doing things and especially his farm work with his mules. Survivors include a daughter, Ava Warren and husband Jeff of the Lodi Community; two sons, Pride Arrington and wife Tracy and Jackson Arrington and wife Sandy, all of the Lodi Community; two brothers, Duard Arrington of Abingdon and Tom Arrington of the Lodi Community; two sisters, Rosie Dunn and Shirley Bordwine, both of Abingdon; a dear friend, Ms. Carrie Price of Damascus; three grandsons; and three granddaughters. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, in the Rock Spring Cemetery with Rev. Charles E. "Jody" Blevins officiating. Interment will follow the service. Friends and casketbearers attending the service are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 10:50 a.m., Wednesday. Gary Thomas Beavers BANDY, Va. – Mr. Gary Thomas Beavers, age 55, passed away Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, following a lengthy illness. Born May 26, 1949, in Richlands, he was the son of Claude and Edith Bandy Beavers of Bandy and the grandson of the late Will and Pearl Beavers and John and Maggie Bandy. He was a Vietnam veteran, having been wounded in action, and received the Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 device and the Purple Heart. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 2166 and the Loyal Order of the Moose. In addition to his grandparents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, April Dawn Beavers. He is survived by his former wife and special caregiver, Barbara Altizer Beavers; two daughters, Heather Michelle Beavers of Damascus and Crystal Rae Farley and husband Kevin of Knoxville, Tenn.; one son, Garett Roland Beavers of the home; two sisters, Sandra Payne of Cedar Bluff and Tammie Scott and husband Rev. Brad of Jonesborough, Tenn.; one very special grandson, who he was very proud of, Jace Jennings Farley, of Knoxville; one special brother-in-law, Jimmy Altizer of Cedar Bluff; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Carolyn Laverna Craig Dibble KINGSPORT – Carolyn Laverna Craig Dibble, 65, passed away Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, at her home, after a courageous and inspiring 11-year battle with cancer. Her husband and four daughters were by her side as she left this world behind. Her determination in the midst of disease and faith throughout hardships were an inspiration to many. Following a diagnosis in 1994 that gave her six months to live, Carolyn went biking in Holland, skiing in Utah, Vermont, California, Colorado, and West Virginia, rock climbing in Colorado and Wisconsin, hiking on the Appalachian Trail, sightseeing in England and France and she attended the birth of two grandsons in Paraguay. God proved himself faithful and merciful as Carolyn walked with Him throughout her life, her battle, and finally into eternity. "The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning." - Lamentations 3:23-24. Carolyn was a member of Kingsport Community Church, where she taught children's Sunday School for 32 years. She is survived by her loving husband of 40 years, Merton Dibble, Kingsport; four daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Wayne Buchanan, Kingsport, Jan and David Limiero, Bakersfield, Calf., Jean and Tony Floyd, San Francisco and Paraguay, and Teresa and Scott Hicks, Gray; nine grandchildren, Gwendolyn, Steven, Jonathan and Charlotte Buchanan, Michael, Carissa and Anthony Limiero, and Daniel and Luke Floyd; two sisters, Coleen Wheeler and Marilyn Harkelroad, both of Bristol; and sister-in-law, Betty Craig, Bristol. She was a wife, mother and homemaker for most of her life and a member of the Harvest Christian Fellowship in Bristol Tennessee. Mason, who died Sept. 24, 1984, a son, Larry Mason, and two brothers, Gordon Allen Linley and Kenneth Eugene Linley. James Warren Phillips ABINGDON – James Warren Phillips, age 79, quietly entered the presence of his Lord on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Phillips was born on May 14, 1925, in Washington County, Va., to the late James and Belle Ketron Phillips. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Va., and was a charter member of the Central Baptist Church of Abingdon, where he served as a deacon. He retired from Bristol Metals in 1987, was employed by Green Thumb at Watauga School, and Second Harvest Food Bank of Abingdon until 1997. Mr. Phillips' friendly, generous and caring nature will be missed by all who knew him. He loved fishing and racoon hunting. Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by four sisters, Lillian Pruitt, Margaret Pruitt, Edith Abell and Juanita Smith, and two brothers, Lloyd Phillips, and Jr. "Buck" Phillips. She was born Dec. 27, 1919, to the late Calvin M. and Addie Reynolds Mumpower. Preceding her in death were her husband of 67 years, Everett Matthew Puckett, a son, Bobby Lee Puckett, a sister, Mabel M. Lemmons, and a brother, Roy B. Mumpower. Lillie Belle and Everett loved and attended the Old Primitive Baptist Church. She also loved and appreciated all those who came to the house to sing the old hymns for them. She is survived by one brother, Gene Mumpower and wife Kitty, of Maryville, Tenn.; two sisters, Dorothy M. Taylor of Broadford, Va., and Sue Addington and husband Karl of Kingsport; her son, Edward Alvin Puckett and wife Scarlett, Glade Spring; and two daughters, Doris Ann Cuddy and husband Jimmy of Bristol Virginia, and Frances (Frankie) Malcolm and husband Gene of Bristol Virginia. Stallard, 68, passed away Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, in the Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital & Medical Center, Kingsport. He was preceded in death by his parents, R.D. Stallard Jr. and Monica Ann Mays Stallard, a son, Michael R. Stallard, and a brother, Joe Ed Stallard. Mr. Stallard was born and raised in Wise County, a graduate of J.J. Kelly High School, an outstanding football player, a graduate of Emory & Henry College, with a B.S. in mathematics, and furthered his education by receiving his masters from VCU. He moved to Hopewell, Va., where he was a math teacher and head football coach of the Hopewell Blue Devils. He was a former assistant defensive coach at the University of Virginia's College at Wise and an employee for Carl McAfee. In 1974, Jack returned to Wise County, where he and his brothers started JK&G Coal Company. He enjoyed playing, coaching and watching football and he loved a good game of golf. He was a born again Christian and of the Freewill Baptist faith. Surviving are his daughter, Kathryn Ridder of Hanover, Mass.; two brothers, Kenneth Stallard and Gary Stallard, both of Wise; a sister, Charlotte of Baltimore; and two grandchildren. He will be missed but never forgotten for his kind ways and contagious laugh. Funeral services will be conducted 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, in the Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel Wise with the Rev. Blane Statzer KINGSPORT – Blane Statzer, age 88, went home to be with the Lord at 8 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005, at SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation-Hillside, following a period of declining health. Born in Hansonville, Va., on Nov. 5, 1916, a son of the late Alva Dolen and Lucy Rachel Cumbow Statzer, he had resided in this area since 1951. Mr. Statzer was a member and usher at Fellowship Free Will Baptist Church. He was a devoted member of the Bloomingdale Ruritan Club, where he was a former, "Man of the Year", and an active member of the Bloomingdale Senior Citizens. Mr. Statzer was a former construction foreman. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great- grandfather, brother and friend. Mr. Statzer is preceded in death by three sisters, Lenora Malone, Estelle Farmer and Lena Purcell. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, whom he married on her birthday in 1938, Nettie Belle Price Statzer of the home; one daughter, Erma Hylton and husband Carl of Kingsport; three sons, Jim Statzer and wife Frances of Kingsport, Fred Statzer and wife Jondra of Ardmore, Okla., and Bill Statzer and wife Sherri of Nashville, Tenn.; three grandchildren, James Statzer, Chris Statzer and Stephanie Johnston; five great-grandchildren, Caroline and Jack Statzer, Taylor and Carson Statzer and Ross Johnston; four sisters, Kate Cross of Lebanon, Josie Ellis of Bristol Virginia, Peggy Stine of Bristol Tennessee, and Mary Hamilton of Bristol Tennessee; one brother, A. Clint Stiltner GRUNDY – Clint Stiltner, 68 years of age, passed away Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, at his residence. Born in Buchanan County, Nov. 12, 1936, he was the son of the late Arthur Stiltner and Linnie Smith Stiltner. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served in the Korean conflict, a member of the John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion, member of the Disabled Veterans Chapter 59, a Kentucky Colonel, a disabled coal miner and was a member of the House of Prayer Pentecostal Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, William D. Stiltner, and one sister, Birchie Stacy. He is survived by two brothers, Emzie Stiltner and Kent Stiltner, both of Grundy; and one sister, Della Hackney of Clintwood. Funeral services for Clint Stiltner will be conducted Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at 1 p.m. at the Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel, Grundy, with Reverend James Chapman officiating. Judy Tuell Sturgill CHILHOWIE – Judy Tuell Sturgill, age 61, passed away Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, at her home. She was born in Smyth County, on April 10, 1943, to the late Reverend Bill and Ruby Tuell. She was preceded in death by her sister, Anna Lou Sheets. Judy retired from Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute personnel department after over 30 years of service. She also worked for the Smyth County Board of Supervisors and was a member of the Grosses Creek Baptist Church. Survivors include: husband, Roger K. Hazel Morgan Wyatt GRUNDY – Hazel Morgan Wyatt, 90 years of age, passed away Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005, at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following an extended illness. Born in West Virginia, she was a daughter of the late F.E. and Martha E. Hatfield Morgan. She was a resident of the Grundy area most of her life and was a member of Grundy Christian Church. She was a graduate of Grundy High School, attended Lewis-Gale Nursing School in Roanoke, Va., and was a retired employee of Grundy Drug Store. Mrs. Wyatt was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Fred Wyatt Sr., Oct. 16, 1993. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Martha (Susie) and husband Herbert Fields, Grundy; one son, R.F. (Bob) Jr. and wife Angie Wyatt, Vansant, Va.; two sisters, Faye Harrison, Statesville, N.C., and Lettie Cox, Grundy; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
