Bowman, age 90, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at the home of her son, Clarence Bowman. Born Jan. 19, 1914, in Mudfork, Va., she was a daughter of the late James and Nancy Pruett Hayes. She was a member of the Mudfork Church of Christ. She retired from Tazewell County Public Schools, where she had worked as a cook in the Tazewell High School cafeteria. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Bowman, one son, Walter Bowman, two brothers and four sisters. Survivors include one son, Clarence Bowman and wife Dora of Bluefield, Va.; one daughter, Nancy James and husband Bill of Canton, Ohio; daughter-in-law, Nora Bowman of Marion; one brother, Frank Hayes of Bluefield, Va.; one sister, Edna Dean of Timberville, Va.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Her husband and four daughters were by her side as she left this world behind. Her determination in the midst of disease and faith throughout hardships were an inspiration to many. Following a diagnosis in 1994 that gave her six months to live, Carolyn went biking in Holland, skiing in Utah, Vermont, California, Colorado, and West Virginia, rock climbing in Colorado and Wisconsin, hiking on the Appalachian Trail, sightseeing in England and France and she attended the birth of two grandsons in Paraguay. God proved himself faithful and merciful as Carolyn walked with Him throughout her life, her battle, and finally into eternity. "The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning." - Lamentations 3:23-24. Carolyn was a member of Kingsport Community Church, where she taught children's Sunday School for 32 years. She is survived by her loving husband of 40 years, Merton Dibble, Kingsport; four daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Wayne Buchanan, Kingsport, Jan and David Limiero, Bakersfield, Calf., Jean and Tony Floyd, San Francisco and Paraguay, and Teresa and Scott Hicks, Gray; nine grandchildren, Gwendolyn, Steven, Jonathan and Charlotte Buchanan, Michael, Carissa and Anthony Limiero, and Daniel and Luke Floyd; two sisters, Coleen Wheeler and Marilyn Harkelroad, both of Bristol; and sister-in-law, Betty Craig, Bristol. Her expertise in quilting brought her both local and regional recognition. She is survived by two daughters, Jeanette Sauers and husband John of Whitetop, Va., and Patricia D. Velma was born Aug. 30, 1910, in Blountville, to the late Rhea and Lannie Stewart Neal. She lived in Bluff City all her life and retired from the Sullivan County Board of Education. She was also an active member of the Elizabeth Chapel United Methodist Church and the Eastern Star. Mrs. Fleenor was preceded in death by her husband, Carl W. Fleenor. He had lived most of his life in the Bristol area, was a brick mason and the former owner of Johnson Masonry Company. Mr. Johnson was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Mr. Johnson was a member of the Belle Meadows Baptist Church and was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Johnson. She was a wife, mother and homemaker for most of her life and a member of the Harvest Christian Fellowship in Bristol Tennessee. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the late Odgar L. Mason, who died Sept. 24, 1984, a son, Larry Mason, and two brothers, Gordon Allen Linley and Kenneth Eugene Linley. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Harman and Matilda Arrington Owens. He joined the Army at the age of 20, where he served in World War II in the Pacific for four years. He worked in Defiance, Ohio, with General Motors and also worked in Buchanan County as a school teacher. Mr. Owens served as a deacon at Cranes Nest Primitive Baptist Church for several years. He was a member of American Legion Post 164 and VFW Post 7360. He spent the last three years of his life at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Grundy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Bruce, Guy and Grethel Owens, and an infant sister, Beulah Owens. Survivors include three sisters, Fannie Lane and Emily Blankenship, both of Vansant, and Imogene Deel of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a host of nieces and nephews.
