Born at Drill, Va., she was the daughter of the late Joseph Lorenzo Dow Perkins and Mariah Honaker Perkins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, James Goodwin, seven sisters, Ida Grindstaff, Ethel Addington, Virgie Pruett, Myrtle Rasnake, Sarah Huffman, Elizabeth Perkins and Violet Perkins, and two brothers, Henry Perkins and Bernard Perkins. Mrs. Asbury was of the Holiness faith. Mrs. Asbury is survived by her husband, Thomas Eli Asbury; four daughters, Nancy Whited of Raven Nest Branch, Geneva Reynolds Allen of Mansfield, Ohio, Naoka Wilson and husband Harold of Raven Nest Branch and Melissa Thomas and husband Danny of Raven Nest Branch; two sons, Junior Smith and wife Debbie of Cedar Bluff and Ricky Asbury and wife Sherry of Bandy, Va.; one sister, Kathleen Madril of Salem, Ore.; two brothers, Frank Perkins and Whitt Perkins, both of Raven Nest Branch; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great- great-grandchild also survives. "Gene" Brooks, 71, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at his residence, following a lengthy illness. He was born in Dickenson County, Va., son of the late Ezra and Mamie Dingus Brooks. Gene was born July 4, 1933. He spent most of his life serving the Lord and was an evangelist since 1971. He retired from Clinchfield Coal Company, Local 1098, after 34 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Belva Boyd and Hazel Kodak. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Thelma Brooks; three sons, Danny Brooks and wife Susan, and Terry Brooks and wife Regina, all of Coeburn, and Bobby Brooks and wife Molly of Manassas Park, Va.; two granddaughters, Amber Brooks of Coeburn and Ashley Culbertson and husband Jason of Castlewood; six grandsons, Allen Brooks and Ryan Brooks, both of Coeburn, Bryce Brooks, Kenny Kubley, Brady Kubley and Jessee Kubley, all of Manassas Park; and several nieces and nephews. He was born in Hampton, N.Y., on Jan. 31, 1924, to the late Joseph Payne and Mary Wilson Brown. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty Brown, of Blacksburg; daughters and sons-in-law, Joanne and John Anderson, of Blacksburg, and Debbie and Mike Cate, of Asheville, N.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Robert Stark and Bonnie Brown, of Doylestown, Pa.; sister, Ann Hatch, of Carson City, Nev.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Robert served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. An avid reader, outdoorsman, family man and volunteer, he maintained a keen wit and wry sense of humor to the end of his life. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Isabella Katherine Fields, and a brother, Billy Bevins. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in World War II, and a retired branch manager of the Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles. She was a homemaker, was of the Freewill Baptist faith and was the widow of Gerald Robert Reeves. She was also preceded in death by a son, Ben Lee Reeves and wife Connie, five brothers, General, Anderson, Cornell, Mayson and Maynard Morgan, two sisters, Susie and Clare Andy, and five grandchildren, Ella Mae, Michael, Missy, Matthew and Stacey.
