She was born Sept. 23, 1921, daughter of the late M. Wise and Carrie Fielder Canter. She was a member of St. Paul UMC and a member of the Susanna Circle, an officer in the Stuart Chapter of the DAR, a member of the Ladies Auxiliary at Wythe County Community Hospital and a member of two bridge clubs. Mrs. Bocock was preceded in death by three brothers, M.W. Canter Jr., Frank Canter and Steven Canter, and one sister, Jane Canter. She was a former secretary with the adult probation office. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Martin H. Bocock; one son and spouse, Martin H. Jr. and Glema D. Bocock of Irmo, S.C.; one daughter and spouse, Jane B. and Charles S. Hargis of Abingdon; and three grandchildren, Nathan Bocock, Alison Bocock and Sarah Jane Hargis. A host of friends also survive. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at 12 noon at st. Paul UMC with the Rev. Donald Stansell officiating. Interment will follow in the West End Mausoleum niche. The family will receive friends in Wesley Hall at the church Wednesday from 11 a.m., until service time. Bower, age 88, formerly of Richlands and Abingdon, passed away Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, in a Harrisonburg health care facility, following a brief illness. Dr. Bower was born Aug. 22, 1916, in Marine City, Mich. He was the son of Russell and Mate Bower. He attended grade school and high school and then entered medical school at Wayne State University in Detroit. After graduating from medical school, he was drafted into the Army, where he served as an orthopedic surgeon in the South Pacific during World War II. When the war was over, Dr. Bower received an invitation from Dr. G.D. Vermilya, with whom he had served in the South Pacific, to come and work in Richlands, at the Clinch Valley Clinic. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Bower began his practice of obstetrics and gynecology. During his practice, he was able to make friends with and help many people. In 1960 alone, he delivered 625 babies and, during his career, he delivered over 12,000. His hands were the first to touch many people and he also touched many lives. Richard had many other interests besides his work. He was an artist and a musician. He loved to jog and even played golf and tennis well into his 70s. Richard was also an elder in the Richlands Presbyterian Church, where he taught Sunday School for over 30 years. Dr. Bower is survived by his wife, Louise; daughters, Kathleen Bower of E. Kingston, N.H., and Lisa Harris and her husband Bill of Cumberland, Md.; one son, James Bower and his wife Rita of Cedar Bluff; and grandchildren, Andrea Nicole Bower of Radford and Jimmy Bower of Cedar Bluff. Dr. Bower loved the Lord, his family, friends and patients. He was a wonderful husband, father and friend. He will be sorely missed. Callahan, age 89, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a former resident of Saltville. He worked in Welch, W.Va., for 42 years as a mining electrician. He was the son of the late Worley and Annie Spriggs Callahan. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Susie Frye Callahan. He was born in Bristol Virginia, a son of the late R. Paul Charles and Emma Clyce Charles. Mr. Charles attended Bristol Virginia Public Schools and graduated from Virginia High School in 1940. After serving in the South Pacific with the U.S. Navy for three years during World War II, he attended Georgia Tech and was graduated from William & Mary College in 1948. He was employed with Bristol Door and Lumber Company for 35 years and retired as president, when it closed in 1983. After retiring, he devoted more time to his hobby as an avid wood worker. Mr. Charles was a member of State Street United Methodist Church, Rocky Mount Historical Association and the Bristol Woodworkers Club. He was a former member of the Rotary Club of Bristol and S.C.O.R.E. Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Frances Currin Charles; and several nieces and nephews, including Susan Morgan Owenby of Kingsport and Ginia Rector Shawl of Bristol; and his beloved dog, Lucky. Published in the Bristol Herald Courier on 1/11/2005. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cline, Warren BREVARD, N.C. – Warren Kent Cline, 83 years of age, passed away Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at his home, following a 27-year struggle against Parkinson's disease, which he endured with grace and a beautiful spirit. His dear wife Ruby was an inspiration as she lovingly took care of him. Born in Bluefield, Va., he was a son of the late Warren Whitney and Earley Dawn Cline. He was one of the founding members of the Brevard Church of Christ and was ordained as an elder of that congregation in 1978. For several years, he was the only song leader the congregation had and he hesitated to be away and leave the duty unfulfilled. He had a love for children and was especially interested in Palmetto Bible Camp. He loved the church and, when his health allowed it, he was constantly involved in activities of the work of the church with a cheerful spirit. Warren grew up in Roanoke, Va., and gave his life to Christ at the age of 15. He was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, with a degree in chemistry. During World War II, he did defense- related research in Dallas. After the war, he earned a PhD in organic chemistry from Ohio State University. Dr. Cline and his family moved to Brevard in 1964 from Hamden, Conn., to work as a research chemist in the New Film Research Department at Olin Matheson Corporation in Pisgah Forest. He retired from Olin Matheson Corporation in 1983. Dr. Cline is survived his wife of 58 years, Ruby Arlene Fields Cline, Brevard; one daughter, Christine and husband Dan Payne, Raleigh, N.C.; one son, George and wife Pam Cline, Ft. Myers, Fla.; two sisters, Betty McCaleb, Fayette, Ala., and Ellen Winzer, Middletown, Md.; one brother, Dr. William Cline, Graham, N.C.; one sister-in-law, Elsie Cline, Lynchburg, Va.; also six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, David Cline, Jan. 29, 1989. Conner, age 83, of 234 Clearview Ave., (Bluewell), formerly of Crumpler, W.Va., went to be with the Lord Saturday, Jan. 8, at St. Lukes Hospital, after a long illness. Born June 20, 1921, in Waynoke, W.Va., he was the son of the late William Garfield Conner and Laura Yapp Conner. He was affiliated with the Protestant faith, was a retired miner from the United Pocahontas Coal Co. at Crumpler, after 38 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, during World War II, where he served in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He was an avid fisherman and was a resident of Crumpler most of his life. He had resided in the Bluewell area for the past seven years. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Alice "Minnie" Adkins Conner, on Dec. 13, 1994, one grandson, Matthew Conner, and an infant brother. Survivors include: three sons, Harry Conner and wife Cathy of Bluefield, Va., Larry Conner and wife Jewel of Bluewell, W.Va., and Rev. Cook, 80, died Jan. 7, 2005, at St. Vincent Medical Center, Toledo, Ohio. He was born March 29, 1924, in Wilder, Va., the son of the late Jasper and Nannie (Osborne) Cook. He married Gracie Stevens on Feb. 11, 1948, and she survives. Mr. Cook worked for U.S. Gypsum, retiring in 1986. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in World War II. She was owner of Irene's Ceramics Shop for 22 years. She bowled with the Housewives League for six years and kept the church and bowling nurseries. Mrs. Nickols was very active with the Cub Scouts for 11 years, having worked with Pack 90 and Pack 806. "I am the Resurrection and the Life. He who believes in Me, though he shall die he shall live forever. He who liveth and believeth in me shall never die." Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, John Donald Dye. She leaves behind her loving daughter, Racheal Dye Bowling and her two children, Jonathan and Nathaniel, with whom she made her home in Elizabethton. Also surviving are her two precious sons, Donald Dye and wife Brenda and their three children, Donavon, Breanna and Dallas of Piney Flats ; Joseph Scott Dye and his wife Kerri Boggs Dye and their children Josh and John; Special twin children, Isabella and Terry; and a special aunt, Virginia and her husband Joseph G. Crowe. Judy, a devout Roman Catholic, was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church in Johnson City. Her faith and her love in Jesus Christ was the foundation of her life. She had made her career in nursing, as a registered nurse, working in Carter County Memorial Hospital and Johnston Memorial Hospital in Virginia. She retired from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Mountain Home. She was a wonderful mother, a doting grandmother and a great-friend to many, who crossed her path. Her sense of humor and genuine good will to all will be long remembered. Her celebration of life will be celebrated at St. Marys Catholic Church on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Groseclose, Va. Following the graveside service, a gathering of family and friends will be held at St. Marys Catholic Church, with a light meal served. Gentry Smith, age 93, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, in Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter R. Smith. Survivors: four sons, Edward Smith and wife Sue of Saltville, Miles Smith and wife Betty of Saltville, Tom Smith and wife Sadie of Glade Spring and Danny Smith and wife Katie of Saltville; two daughters, Margaret S. Vaught and husband Herbert of Glade Spring and Patsy McNew of Glade Spring; 23 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Published in the Bristol Herald Courier from 1/10/2005 - 1/11/2005. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Smith Jr., Olen "Doc" ABINGDON – Mr. Olen "Doc" Smith Jr., age 83, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, Jan. 9, 2005, in Johnston Memorial Hospital, with his loving and caring wife, stepdaughter and step-grandson at his bed side. He was born May 21, 1921, to the late Virginia Lee and Olen Smith Sr., Meadowview. He was also preceded in death by twin brothers, Marvin and Marion Smith. Prior to World War II, Olen "Doc" served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). He was drafted in to the military forces and assigned to the Tuskegee Institute. Later he was assigned overseas to Italy with the 332nd Fighter Group, was an aircraft mechanic and remained there till the end of World War II. He was one of the original Tuskegee Airmen. After being discharged from the service, he went to Erie, Pa., where he worked for General Motors. He was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church, where he served as a teacher and a trustee. He was on the board of the day care center and an honorary member of the American Legion. After coming back to Abingdon, he was a deacon and Sunday School teacher of the First Baptist Church, Meadowview, where he was a loyal member until his last illness. Olen "Doc" is survived by his wife, Ethel Baker Smith; one daughter, Patricia Smith; one granddaughter; four grandsons; four great-grandchildren; one stepdaughter, Ellen Carter; three step-grandchildren; one sister, Viola Daniels and husband Ely, Colorado Springs, Colo.; three nieces; and six nephews. The funeral service will be conducted Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at 2 p.m., in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Lafayette Vance, Rev. Andrew Arnold, Rev. William Austin and Rev. W.A. Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens, with military honors to be rendered by the Highland Veterans Honor Color Guard. A native of Belfast, Va., she was the wife of Carl Cecil Snead, also of Virginia. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Randal Keith Snead of Belfast, Carl Joseph Snead of Davidson, N.C., and Conley Barnette Snead of Columbia, S.C.; one daughter, Julia Ellen Snead Allen of Spartanburg; and four grandchildren, Morgan Ann Snead and Eliza Nicole Snead of Davidson, and Marianna Jane Allen and Silas Lee Allen IV of Spartanburg, S.C. ; and one brother, Jack Grant Barnette of Belfast. She was predeceased by one grandchild, Manuel Torres Jr. She was a member of the Cherry Laurel Garden Club and a past president of the Hampton Heights Neighborhood Association.
