She was born in Richlands, a daughter of the late Crockett C. and Wanda Mullins Selfe, and was a graduate of Richlands High School and Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Va. She was a member of Central Presbyterian Church and was active in the YWCA. Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Victor Christian Jr.; two daughters, Sarah Lynn Christian of Atlanta and Lisa C. Compton, 62, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005. He was a native of Martinsville, Va. He served in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1966. He was a Vietnam War veteran. He has been a resident of the Peninsula and Gloucester since 1966 and retired as a cabinet maker in 1997. Born July 30, 1921, in West Virginia, he was a son of the late Noah and Polly Bailey Lester. A lifelong resident of the general area, he was a member of the Trinity Pentecostal Church at Elk Garden. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. He was a disabled coal miner, having worked for Red Jacket Coal Company, and a member of the UMWA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Lester, and several brothers and sisters. Survivors include his wife, Pauline R. She was a former resident of 605 Portsmouth Ave., Bristol, Va. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Virginia Carrier, and a lifelong resident of Bristol. Betty was a charter member of Norfolk Avenue Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher, church choir member and various other activities at the church she loved. She loved having Sunday lunch with her family. She had been a former pink lady volunteer at Bristol Memorial Hospital, with over 20 years of service. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Hurley H. (Red) McCroskey, former owner of HH McCroskey Fruit Market in Bristol Virginia. Riddle Jr., born Sept. 17, 1924, was the son of the late Dr. Arthur C. Riddle Sr. and Lucille F. Riddle. He was a native of Bristol Tennessee. He leaves his wife, Sophie Goodpasture Riddle; two daughters, Vikki Smith, wife of John W. Smith, of Grand Island, N.Y., and Valerie R. Tate, wife of Everett B. Tate Jr. of Charlotte, N.C.; one son, Arthur C. Riddle III, husband to Bonnie C. Riddle of Westminster, S.C.; 11 grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; and one sister, LaVerne R. Frazier of Bristol Tennessee. Dr. Riddle was an oral and maxillofacial surgeon for over 25 years and retired in 1983. He pioneered oral surgery in the hospital setting. He was a staff member of St. Joseph's Hospital; Pardee Hospital in Hendersonville; Memorial Mission Hospital, where he served on the credentials committee; as well as a consulting staff physician at the Veterans Administration Hospital. He was a member of the American Dental Association; Buncombe Country Dental Society; American and Southeastern Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons; Deans Honorary Odontalogical Society; Pierre Fauchard Honorary Academy; International Association of Anesthesiologist; PSI Omega Dental fraternity; Sigma Alpha Epsilon social fraternity; the First Presbyterian Church; and Lion's Club, where he served on the board of Merchants Association. He was a member of the Biltmore Forest Country Club and the Country Club of Asheville, where he served on the board of governors. Dr. Riddle attended Temple University in Philadelphia. He graduated from the University of Tennessee, with a bachelor of science degree, and acquired his doctorate of dental surgery at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Memphis. He received his post-graduate training at John Gaston Hospital in Memphis. He also served in the U.S. Navy. Dr. Riddle opened his practice in Asheville in 1955, where he was the first oral maxillofacial surgeon in the area and one of eight such surgeons in North Carolina at that time. He published many papers on reconstructive surgery and surgical techniques. He was a frequent speaker to medical and dental groups throughout the Southeast and was the first dentist invited to deliver a paper to the International Symposium on Antibiotics sponsored by the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. He presented his research findings on the antibiotic Terramycin to the group in Washington, D.C. Dr. Riddle was an avid sportsman and ardent golfer. VFW Post 9600 of Pound will conduct military graveside services. Jerald G. Sykes, 76, passed away at the Johnson City Medical Center on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005. Published in the Bristol Herald Courier on 1/13/2005. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tiller, Sarah MENDOTA, Va. – Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzy" Rasnake Tiller, 91, formerly of the Sandy Ridge section of Cleveland, Va., passed away at her home, surrounded by family and friends on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005. Born on April 10, 1913, in Russell County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Sylvester and Henrietta Osborne Rasnake. She was a member of Clinchview Freewill Baptist Church in Cleveland since 1930. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Tivis Tiller; one son, Athenis Tiller; five brothers, John Rasnake, Harmon Rasnake, Clarence Rasnake, Rit Rasnake and Benny Rasnake; and five sisters, Myrtle Rasnake, Ada Deel, Laura Johnson, Delphia Ball and Ellen Lester. Survivors include five daughters, Maxie Skeen and husband Johnny, Cleveland, Theresa Wilson and husband Don, Council, Va., Larnell Stevens and husband Kenneth, Cleveland, Frances Conner and husband Gene, Catlett, Va., and Cloteen McReynolds and husband Ballard, Dungannon, Va.; one son, T.C. Tiller and friend, Martha Fleenor of Mendota; two special family friends, Virginia Lowe and Frank Farmer; two sisters, Fannie Kelly, Cleveland, and Thelma Musick, Abingdon; and two brothers, Campbell Rasnake, Cedar Bluff, and Carl Rasnake, Cleveland. Also surviving Ms. Tiller are 13 grandchildren, Swaine Skeen and wife Patricia, Loveland, Colo., Melanie Adkins and husband Randy, Summerfield, N.C., Bryant Skeen and wife Christina, Lebanon, Donald Wilson and wife Judy and Ruthie Crabtree and husband Stan, all of Glade Spring, Marsha Garrett and husband Chris, Lebanon, Diane Lester and husband Ronnie, Honaker, Elizabeth Perkins, Cleveland, Tina Barkley and husband Michael, Limestone, Tenn., Robin Jenkins, Catlett, Stephen McReynolds, Michael McReynolds and Monte McReynolds and wife Kimberly, all of Dungannon; 25 great-grandchildren; special friends, Doris Musick and Sylvia Barton. Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law, Swaine Skeen, Randy Adkins, Bryant Skeen, Donnie Wilson, Stan Crabtree, Chris Garrett, Ronnie Lester, Michael Barkley, Stephen Mcreynolds, Michael McReynolds and Monte McReynolds. Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Culop, Doug Culop, Josh Reynolds, Tim McCullough, Donnie Powell, Bill Johnson, Skip Jessee, Gail Orifield, Doug Musick, Phillip Fleming and members of the Cleveland Life Saving Crew. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 15, at 3 p.m., at Owens Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Russell Baldwin and Rev. Roy Lee Wilson officiating. Interment will follow at Russell Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon. The family will receive friends on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home or friends may call any time at the homes of T.C. Johnny Gibson and Rev. Paul Bufford officiating. The committal will be on Saturday at 12 p.m., in the Glenwood Cemetery, with entombment in Glenwood Mausoleum.
