Bowlin, 62, formerly of Coeburn, passed away Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at the Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. He retired from Coastal Coal Corp. in 1995, after 29 years of service, was the former owner and operator of Jack's Floral in Coeburn, was a member of the Coeburn Masonic Lodge and Royal Arch Chapter and was of the Freewill Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by father, John Bowlin; sister, Jewel Osborne; and a brother, Clyde Bowlin. Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Virginia Vance Bowlin; his mother, Mary Bowlin; two daughters, Regina Meade and husband Eddie and Kimberly Winebarger and husband Shane; beloved grandchildren, Allison, Jacob, Emily and Clay; brother-in-law, Ray Osborne; and a host of special family and friends. Brewster, age 74, of Big Creek Road, passed away Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at his home following a brief illness. He was born in Richlands and was the son of the late William McKinley and Pearl Thelma Buskill Brewster, both Tazewell County natives. He had made his home in the Richlands area all of his life and was a former carpenter and contractor. He was a Richlands High School Class of 1950 graduate, where he excelled on the football team. He was nicknamed "Golden Toe" because of his ability to kick field goals. He was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran, having been stationed in Germany, where he served as a military policeman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Thelma Louise Cordill and Lucy Belle Baldwin; two brothers, Charles Frederick Brewster and William McKinley Brewster Jr.; and two infant brothers, Rex Arnold Brewster and James Walter Brewster. Survivors are one sister, Eva Dean Fox of Richlands, and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services for Harold C. Brummett, Wilmer NORTHFIELD, N.J. – Wilmer Monroe "Will" Brummett, 72, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, in the Shore Memorial Hospital in Somers Point. Born and raised in Virginia in his younger years, Mr. Brummett worked at the General Shelby in Virginia. Upon moving to New Jersey, he worked in Atlantic City, as a waiter and then a bartender for the Marlboro–Blenheim Hotel for 25 years. Until his retirement, Will was the manager at the Hub Clothing Store in Pleasantville. Mr. Brummett was a member of the Central United Methodist Church in Linwood, N.J., and he enjoyed his family and friends and loved gardening at home. He is survived by his wife Jean (Nee McCreery) Brummett; his daughter, Deborah Fawley of Egg Harbor Township, N.J.; his son, Bill Brummett of Northfield, and Debbie Fishburn. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Shane and Cody; his four sisters, Dorothy Carrier and her husband Ron of Bristol Tennessee, Ida Tharp and her husband Larry of Abingdon, Marie Vankovich and her husband Steve of Bristol Virginia and Trisha Hartsock and her friend Fred, also of Bristol Virginia; as well as his many nieces and nephews. Mr. Brummett was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and one sister. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County and a member of Yellow Springs Methodist Church. She was retired from Harwood Manufacturing. Mrs. Counts was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Counts, and foster son, Frankie Dobbins. She was born Aug. 16, 1910, in Sullivan County, Tenn., to the late Joseph and Nannie DeVault. She had lived in several areas before moving to Emory after her retirement. She was a 1932 graduate of the Emory & Henry College and had been a school teacher "from the east coast to the west coast." Irma was a member of the Emory United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women College Community Club and the Blacks Fort DAR. She was preceded in death by her husband, Taylor Darden; brothers, Serle DeVault, Frank DeVault and Cooper DeVault; and sisters, Maxie DeVault, Annamelle Waddell and Mable DeVault. She attended Green Valley Baptist Church. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by three sisters, Wilma Collins, Elaine Mullins and Buredah Hawkins, and four brothers, Verco Jackson, Joe Jackson, Eddie Jackson and E. He was born April 9, 1935, in Washington County, Va., to the late Wiley Humphrey and Ila Hash Humphrey (who preceded him in death one week ago). Johnny was a long-distance truck driver for many years and had been employed by Appalachian Oil Company for several years. He was currently the owner and operator of Johnny's Lawn Care Service, where he had a host of friends and satisfied customers. He was a charter member of Lifeline Ministries, where he served on the Board of Elders, secretary-treasurer of the Men's Fellowship and was a vital part of the Praise and Worship Team. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Wiley Humphrey Jr. and Leon Humphrey, and a brother-in-law, Roy Prater. Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Fred and Bessie Carver, Darrell Faulkner, Shannon's father, one uncle, James Carver, and one aunt, Judy Carver Van Wetering. BLOUNTVILLE – H.R. "Rodie" Rodefer Jr., age 80, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at Wellmont Hospice House. He was born in Blountville and was the son of the late Herman and Nettie Mae Salyers Rodefer. As a young boy, H.R. "Rodie" grew up sharecropping with his family in Macy Springs, Va., and Shady Valley, Tenn., and residing in Sullivan County. He served his country with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and witnessed the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima. After returning home, he continued farming and married Mildred Kendrick, a daughter of the late Bob and Bessie Kendrick. He was of the Methodist faith and, early in their 59 years together, H.R. "Rodie" and Mildred enjoyed singing gospel music with various friends in local churches and on the radio. His favorite song was "Beulah Land." He worked at Universal Moulding, was a former employee of Monroe Calculating and retired from Holston Defense as a chemical operator. He was a member of the Whiteside Masonic Lodge 13 in Blountville and the Patton-Crosswhite VFW Post 6975 in Bristol. Before declining health, he enjoyed fishing, playing the harmonica, hunting and training bird dogs. He never met a stranger and loved to talk to everyone. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Howard "Rawhide" Rodefer. Survivors include his wife, Mildred Kendrick Rodefer; two daughters, Cindy Edwards and husband Anthony of Bristol Tennessee and Priscilla "Pat" Mitchell and husband Gerald of Blountville; five sisters, Flora Fleenor of Blountville, Ruth Minnick of Blountville, Elsie Shaffer of Festus, Miss., Edith Benfield of Jonesborough, Tenn., and Wanda Griffin of Nashville, N.C.; two grandchildren, Jerry M. Mitchell and wife Traci and Robert A. Mitchell; two great- grandchildren, Victoria "Tori" Mitchell and Taylor Mitchell; and several nieces and nephews. William and Martha Spears and was preceded in death by 17 brothers and sisters. Mr. Spears was a veteran of the U. S. Navy from 1943 until 1945, U.S. Army from 1947 until 1950 and U.S. Air Force from 1951 until 1956, having served during World War II and the Korean conflict. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 57, Abingdon, was an avid fisherman, and was of the Holiness faith. He is survived by his wife, Mary Rash Spears; one daughter, Faye Hill and her husband Rick of Bristol Virginia; three stepsons, John Alex Sproles and his wife Connie of Glade Spring, Henry G. Mr. Strouth was born on May 17, 1934, in Bristol Tennessee, to the late Willie and Ruby Richards Strouth. He had lived all his life in the Bristol area and worked in maintenance. He was of the Baptist faith and was a volunteer for gate operations at the Tennessee High School football games. Mr. Strouth was preceded in death by one son, Danny Strouth.
