He was born in Bristol, a son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Hugh H. Adair. He was a graduate and valedictorian of the Virginia High School Class of 1943 and was a 1948 graduate of the University of Richmond. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Mr. Adair was associated with Dominion National Bank and with the City of Bristol Virginia as city clerk and auditor. He was later business manager of Virginia Intermont College. He was an active member of State Street United Methodist Church and was a leader in many organizations including serving as president of the Bristol Jaycees, vice-president of the Bristol Chapter of the American Red Cross and a member of the Bristol Public Library Board and the Bristol Virginia School Board. Mr. Adair is survived by his wife, Doris Wampler Adair; a daughter, Robin Adair Reese and her husband Charles of Bristol; a son, Thomas Adair and his wife Julia of Richmond; grandchildren, Brandon Reese and Amelia and William Adair; nieces, Judy Nickell Markwood and Nancy Nickell Fox of Johnson City; and a nephew, Robert Nickell of Winter Haven, Fla. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Bane Nickell. The funeral service will be conducted at 7 o'clock Thursday evening at State Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Fred Dearing and Rev. Jane Taylor officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. The committal service and burial in Glenwood Cemetery on Friday will be private. The family requests that flowers be omitted and that memorial contributions be sent to the Bristol Public Library, 701 Goode St., Bristol, VA 24201, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 2727 Enterprise Parkway, Suite 201, Richmond, VA 23494 and to State Street United Methodist Church, 300 West Valley Drive, Bristol, VA 24201.
