Syphers LEBANON -- Lt. Col. Leada Helton Syphers (Retired), of 535 Cedar Drive, Lebanon Manor, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at her home. Born in Russell County a daughter of the late Walter G. Helton and Nannie Victoria McCloud Helton, she had lived in Richmond and Bristol returning to Lebanon in 1997. She was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving as a nurse, retiring with 30 years of service. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ishmael W. Helton and Orville B. Helton. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. W.C. (Estella) Elliott and Mrs. Calvin (Elizabeth) Breeding, both of Lebanon, and Mrs. Richard (Victoria) Wesley, Bluefield, W.Va.; also several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel in Lebanon with the Rev. Tom Edwards officiating. Burial with military rites conducted by the Patton-Crosswhite V.F.W. Post 6975 will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, in the Mountain View Cemetery in Bristol Virginia. Those attending should meet at the cemetery. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lebanon Baptist Church, P.O. Box 55, Lebanon, VA 24266 or to the Russell County Medical Center Hospice, P.O. Box 3600, Lebanon, VA 24266.
