KNOW ALL MEN by these Presents that we John Flood Edmunds, Sterling Edmunds and Thomas Edmunds are held and firmly bound unto John Jones, John Powell, Alexr. Watson, Joseph Peebles, Littleberry Robinson, and James Marshall, Gentlemen Justices of the County of Brunswick now sitting in the sum of fifty four thousand pounds of Tobacco to which payment well and truly to be made to the said Justices and their Successors we bind ourselves our heirs Executors and Administrators jointly and severally firmly by these Presents Sealed with our Seals and dated this 24th Day of July 1780 in the fifth year of the Commonwealth. THE CONDITION of the above obligation is such that whereas the above bound John Flood Edmunds is appointed Sheriff of the County of Brunswick in Virtue of a Commission from his Excellency the Governor, IF therefore the said John Flood Edmunds shall well and truly receive and collect all sums of Tobacco or Money laid and assessed on the Tithable Persons in the said County on the fourth Day of March last past and shall well and truly pay the same to such Persons, and in such manner as was directed by the said Court and also Account with the Court for the overplus then the above obligation to be void or else to remain in full force. KNOW ALL MEN by these Presents that we John Flood Edmunds, Sterling Edmunds and Thomas Edmunds are held and firmly bound unto George Brook Esqr. Treasurer of Virginia in the sum of one hundred thousand pounds current money to which payment well and truly to be made to the said Treasurer and his successors we bind ourselves our heirs Executors and Administrators jointly and severally firmly by these Presents Sealed with our seals and dated this 24th Day of July 1780 in the fifth year of the Commonwealth. THE CONDITION the above obligation is such that whereas the above bound John Flood Edmunds is appointed Sheriff of the County of Brunswick in Virtue of a Commission from his Excellency the Governor bearing date the 2d Day of May last past, IF therefore the said John Flood Edmunds shall well and truly collect all duties and Taxes accruing and becoming due within the said County of Brunswick in pursuance of any Act or Acts of Assembly for raising a supply of Money for Publick (sic) Exgencs (sic) for this present Year, and shall also duly Account for and pay the same according to the directions of the said Acts then the above obligation to be void else to remain in full force. Governor of Virginia in the sum of forty thousand pounds current money to which payment well and truly to be made to the said Thomas Jefferson and his successors we bind ourselves our heirs Executors and Administrators jointly and severally firmly by these Presents Sealed with our seals and dated this 24th Day of July 1780 in the 5th year of the Commonwealth. THE CONDITION the above obligation is such that whereas the above bound John Flood Edmunds is appointed collector of the Taxes in pursuance of an Act of Assembly entitled an Act for raising a supply of Money for the service of the united States pased (sic) at the last session of Assembly in the Year 1779 IF therefore the said John Flood Edmunds shall well and truly collect all duties and Taxes accruing and becoming due within the said County of Brunswick and shall also well and truly account for and pay the same according to the directions of the said Act then the above obligation to be void else to remain in full force. Governor of Virginia in the sum of thirty thousand pounds current money to which payment well and truly to be made to the said Thomas Jefferson and his successors for the use of this Commonwealth we bind ourselves our heirs Executors and Administrators jointly and severally firmly by these Presents Sealed with our seals and dated this 24th Day of July 1780 in the 5th year of the Commonwealth. THE CONDITION the above obligation is such that whereas the above bound John Flood Edmunds is appointed Sheriff of the County of Brunswick in Virtue of a Commission from his Excellency the Governor bearing date the 2d Day of May last past, IF therefore the said John Flood Edmunds shall well and truly collect all Taxes accruing and becoming due within the County of Brunswick aforesaid in pursuance of an Act for establishing a fund to borrow money for the united states and for other purposes pased (sic) at the last session of Assembly in the year 1779 and shall also well and truly pay and account for the same according to the directions of the said Act then the above obligation to be void else to remain in full force. This Indenture made this twenty eighth Day of August, 1780 BETWEEN Briggs Goodrich and Mary his wife of the County of Brunswick of the one part and Charles Dillehay of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of sixteen hundred pounds . . . doth grant bargain sell enfeoff and confirm unto the said Charles Dillehay . . . one certain Tract or parcel of Land lying and being in the County of Brunswick on both sides of Fountains Creek containing by estimation two hundred and thirty eight acres . . . and bounded as followeth (to wit) BEGINNING at a hickory on the south side of Fountains Creek, thence to a Pine, thence to a white Oak on Henry Wyche's line, thence to a Hickory, thence to a Pine, thence to a hickory on Fountains Creek, thence up the said Creek to Tatums line, thence along the said Tatums line to a white oak thence along the said line to a Pine a corner on Wilkins thence along the said Wilkins's line to a gum, thence to a red Oak sapling, thence to Hargroves line, thence along Hargroves line to a white oak on Fountains Creek thence down the various courses of the said Creek to the BEGINNING . . . This Indenture made this 16th Day of October 1780 BETWEEN Thomas Denton and Elizabeth his wife of the County of Brunswick of the one part and Benjamin Jones of the said County of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of three thousand nine hundred and ninety seven pounds ten shillings . . . doth grant bargain and sell enfeoff and confirm unto the said Benjamin Jones . . . one certain tract or parcel of Land lying situate on the south side of the three Creeks . . . it is bounded thus BEGINNING at a dead hickory on Thomas Lanier's line thence along the said line S 16 degrees E two hundred and sixty two poles thence S thirty nine degrees east seventy eight Poles thence N twenty degrees E fifty poles to a posimmon in the head of a branch thence down the branch to Maple thence N seventy degrees west fifty one poles to white oak thence N five degrees east one hundred thirty four poles to the Creek thence up the Creek to the mouth of a branch thence thirty eight Poles to the hickory at the Beginning . . . This Indenture made the 23d of May, 1780 BETWEEN Thomas Jordan and Olive Jordan his wife of Brunswick County of the one part and Thomas Mop of the same County of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of two thousand pounds . . . hath granted bargained and sold aliened enfeoffed released and confirmed unto the said Tomas (sic) Mop . . . one certain tract or parcel of Land containing one hundred acres . . . by estimation situated lying and being in Brunswick County and in Meherrin Parish and bounded as followeth (to wit) BEGINNING at John Mop's and William Dales corner then along the said Dales line to Thomas Shelton's line thence by the said Shelton's line to the said John Mapes line thence by the said Mapes line to the BEGINNING tit being the same Land the said Jordan bought of James Wordan . . . This Indenture made this twenty third day of October, 1780 BETWEEN John Vick Senr. of Brunswick County in the State of Virginia of the one part and Howell Vick of the County and Province aforesaid of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred pounds . . . doth give grant bargain sell alien enfeoff release and confirm unto the said Howel Vick . . . one certain tract of Land situate lying and being in the County and State aforesaid and on the North side of the Beaver Pond Creek and bounded as followeth (Viz) BEGINNING at a Popler thence running North thirty six degrees West two hundred Poles to a red oak thence South thirty three degrees West three hundred and twenty Poles to a white Oak, thence South thirty six Degrees East two hundred Poles to a small hickory, thence North thirty three degrees East three hundred and twenty Poles to the First STATION containing by estimation three hundred and eighty four acres of Land granted by Patent to the above said John Vick and Henry Brewer . . . This Indenture made the seventeenth Day of October 1780 BETWEEN Richard Pilkinton of the one part and Willis Pilkinton of the other part WITNESS that the said Richard Pilkinton hath bargained sold aliened and confirmed unto the said Willis Pilkenton . . . one certain tract or parcel of Land containing by estimation one hundred acres . . . and being in the County of Brunswick between Roses Creek and Great Creek & bounded as followeth (to wit) BEGINNING at a live oak on rockey run on John Robert's line thence along the said Robert's line as it meanders to William Browns line at a shrub white oak thence along the said Browns line to Richard Pilkingtons (sic) line at a hickory thence along the said Pilkingtons line as it meanders to the Beginning . . . Pearson in the County of Brunswick and Elizabeth his wife of the one part and Nathaniel Gregory of the Town of Petersburg of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of seventeen thousand pounds of Tobacco . . . do grant bargain and sell alien enfeoff release and confirm unto the said Nathaniel Gregory . . a certain tract piece or parcel of Land being in the County of Brunswick whereon he the said now dwelleth containg (sic) four hundred acres and bounded as follows (Viz) BEGINNING at the mouth of a branch on the south side of Crablouse Creek running thence on Edward's line south seventy four East twelve Poles to a white oak, south eighty, East one hundred and fifty three Poles to a Spanish oak, South eleven degrees, West one hundred and forty seven Poles to Points South fifty five East one hundred and eighty three Poles crossing Kittle stock road to a Pine, thence on Colo. Fredrick Macklins, West sixty five Poles to a black Jack, North forty five, West one hundred and eighty four Poles to a white Oak, South forty, West ninety three Poles to Pointers, North thirty West two hundred Poles to the grapy branch, thence down the same as it meanders to the aforesaid Creek and down the same according to its meander to the BEGINNING . . . Jones of the County of Brunswick and Colony of Virginia of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of nine hundred pounds . . . doth grant bargain and sell unto the said William Jones . . . a certain tract or parcel of Land containing by estimation two hundred and fifty acres . . . it being the tract of Land where Charles Jones formerly lived it being in Brunswick County & bounded as followeth (Viz) BEGINNING at John Linches corner upon a white oak thence along the old line to William Huskeys corner upon a red oak thence along Huskeys line to Fletchers corner upon a white oak thence along Fletchers line to Linches corner upon a white oak thence along Linches line to the first STATION . . . This Indenture made this sixth Day of April, 1780, BETWEEN William Jones and Daucey his wife, and Hannah Jones of the County of Brunswick of the one part, and Edward Holloway of the same County of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of one thousand four hundred pounds . . . doth bargain sell enfeoff alien and confirm unto the said Edward Holloway . . . one certain tract or parcel of Land situate lying and being in the County aforesaid and containing by estimation eighty acres & bounded as followeth (to wit) BEGINNING on William Buchanans line, thence along his line to a corner shrub oak in the same thence along a new marked line between the said William Jones's and the said Hannah Jones to John Biggs's line on the spring branch thence up the said branch to a slash thence up the said slash to a small corner gum in the said Biggs's line thence along said Biggs's line to Edward Holloway's line thence along his line to the BEGINNING for compliment of eighty acres . . . THE COMMONWEALTH of Virginia To John Jones & David Walker Gentlemen Greeting Whereas William Withers and Priscilla his wife by their certain Indenture of Bargain and sale bearing date the 26th Day of January 1778 have sold & conveyed unto Andrew Meade the fee simple Estate of seven hundred and forty eight acres of Land lying and being in the County of Brunswick and whereas the said Priscilla cannot conveniently travel to our Court . . . to make acknowledgement of the said conveyance therefore you or any two of you are hereby empowered to receive the acknowledgement which the said Priscilla shall be willing to make . . . and you or any two of you are therefore commanded personally to go to the said Priscilla and received here acknowledgment of the same and examine her privily and apart from the said William Withers her husband . . . that you distinctly and openly certify the Justices of the said Court under your hand & seals sending then there the said Indenture and this writ Witness Peter Pelham Junior Clerk of the said Court the fifteenth Day of July 1779 In the fourth year of the Commonwealth. Dinwiddie County ---- Agreeable to the within Writ, we the subscribers personally waited on the within mentioned Priscilla, wife of the within mentioned William Withers and examined the aforesaid Priscilla, privily and apart from her husband and she freely and voluntarily without persuasion or threats of her husband, agreed to & acknowledged that she was willing the within mentioned Indenture of bargain & sale bearing date the 26th Day of January 1778 which is hereunto annexed should be Recorded in the County Court of Brunswick within the State of Virginia Certified under our hands and Seals the 17th Day of August 1780. THE COMMONWEALTH of Virginia To William Thornton & John Powell Gentlemen Greeting Whereas Richard Hagood & Jane his wife & Mordica Hagood and Elizabeth his wife by their certain Indenture of bargain and sale bearing date the tenth Day of February 1780 have sold and conveyed unto Zebulon Lewis the fee simple Estate of One hundred and ninety five acres of Land lying and being in the Parish of Saint Andrews in the County of Brunswick, and whereas the said Jane and Elizabeth cannot conveniently travel to the Court . . . to make acknowledgment of the said conveyance therefore we do give unto you or any two of you power to received the acknowledgment . . . and we do therefore command you or any two of you that you do personally go the said Jane & Elizabeth and receive her acknowledgment of the same and examine her privily and apart from their said Husbands . . . that you distinctly and openly certify us thereof in our said Court . . . the twenty seventh Day of June 1780 in the forth year of the Commonwealth. This Indenture made this twentyeth Day of November 1780 BETWEEN Laurance House of the County of Brunswick of the one part and William Batte of the same County of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of five thousand pounds . . . doth grant bargain and sell unto William Batte . . . all that Tract or parcel of Land situate lying and being in the aforesaid County of Brunswick and containing by estimation three hundred and thirty five Acres . . . and bounded as followeth BEGINNING at a Pine a corner Tree of Richard Stewarts on Hicks's branch, thence along the said Stewarts line to James Walkers line, from thence along the said Walkers line to Drury Stiths entry line thence along the said entry line to Thomas Laurances decd. line, thence along the said Laurances line to Hicks's branch thence down the meanders of the said Branch to the BEGINNING . . . THE CONDITIONS of the above obligation is such that of the above bound John Flood Edmund during the continuance in the Office of Sheriff shall truly and faithfully collect pay and account for all duties and Taxes within the County of Brunswick aforesaid Imposed In Virtue of an Act of Assembly passed at the last Session in May last past entitled an act for calling in and redeeming the money now in circulation and for comiting (sic) and funding new Bills of Credit according to the resolutions of the Congress of the eighteenth of March last, then the above obligation to be void else to remain in full force. This Indenture made the twenty first Day of February 1781 BETWEEN Benjamin Blick of the County of Brunswick of the one part, and the Orphans of Gabriel Harrison of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the love and friendship which he the said Benjamin Blick doth bear to the said Orphans Doth after his and his wifes decease Give grant alien and confirm unto the said Orphans four Negroes and their increase from this date (to wit) unto Jane Harrison one Negro Cyries . . . unto Nathaniel Harrison one Negro Judith and her increase . . . unto James Harrison one Negro Grace and her increase . . ., and unto Sarah Anne Harrison one negro Aggy and all her increase after this date . . . But if either of the girls should die before they come of age or before they have a Child to heir their Negroes, then the other Girl shall have her sisters negroes . . . Signed by Benjamin Blick. This Indenture made the twelfth Day of January 1781 BETWEEN Matthew Smart & Mary his wife and John Moodie of Dinwiddie County of the one part and Buckner Harwell of the Brunswick County of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of thirty two pounds . . . whereof the said Matthew Smart and John Moodie and our wifes Mary Smart and Mary Moodie doth hereby acknowledge . . . doth grant bargain and sell alien a certain parcel of Land containing sixty six and two thirds acres, lying and being in Saint Andrew Parish in the County aforesaid being part of one hundred acres formerly William Browder now the property of his three Daughters bounded as follows BEGINNING at Drury Lanier, and William Lanier's corners, thence along Drury Lanier's Line to Buckner Harwell's line, thence along his to Borrow's line thence along the said Borrow's line to the said William Laniers to the BEGINNING . . . THE COMMONWEALTH of Virginia To John Jones Junr. & Joseph Jones Gentlemen of the County of Dinwiddie Greeting Whereas Mathew Smart and Mary his wife and John Moodie and Sarah his wife by their certain Indenture of bargain and Sale bearing date with these Presents have sold and conveyed unto Buckner Harwell the fee simple Estate of sixty six and two thirds Acres of Land . . . And whereas the said Mary and Sarah cannot conveniently travel to our Court to make Acknowledgment of the said conveyance Therefore we do give unto you or any two of you power to receive the Acknowledgment which the said Mary and Sarah shall be willing to make before you of the Conveyance aforesaid in the said Indenture which is hereunto annexed and we do therefore command you or any two of you that you do personally go the said Mary & Sarah and receive their Acknowledgement of the same . . . the 12th Day of January 1778 in the second year of the commonwealth.
