This Indenture made the twenty eighth Day of December 1785 BETWEEN Thomas Stith Senr. of Brunswick County of the one part and John Hardiway Senior of the County of Dinwiddie son in law of the said Thomas Stith of the other part . . . for & in consideration of the natural love & affection which he hath for and beareth unto the said John Hardiway and his two sons, Peterson & Henry Simmons Grandsons of the said Thomas Stith & for their better support & maintenance in the World . . . doth give, grant, alien & Confirm unto the said John Hardiway . . . forever three negro slaves (to wit) Betty & her child Sal & Hannah which said Slaves were given & delivered by the said Thomas Stith unto the said John Hardiway & Mariana his wife in the month of October one thousand seven hundred and seventy five & hath continued ever since in the actual possession of the said John Hardiway . . . This Indenture made the fourth day of May 1786 BETWEEN William Abernathy and Elisabeth his wife of the County of Brunswick of the one part and William Hill of the same County of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of sixty pounds . . . doth grant, bargain and sell alien and confirm unto the said William Hill . . . a parcel of Land situate in the said County of Brunswick containing one hundred acres . . . bounded by Drury Stith's line, Edmunds Stith's line, Thomas Stith Junior's line and the said William Abernathy's line and the path that leads from Thomas Stith Senior's to Burche's road, being the Land that the said William Abernathy sold to Christopher Robinson whereon the said Christopher Robinson now liveth . . . This Indenture made this twenty seventh day of October 1785, BETWEEN Joseph Greenhill of the County of Brunswick in the State of Virginia of the one part and Hubbard Saunders of the same County and State of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the just & full sum of One hundred and fifteen pounds . . . and interest which the said Joseph Greehill owes and is justly due unto Thomas Saunders of the same County as will more fully appear by the said Greenhill's bond on demand the twenty fifth of December next for one hundred & ten pounds & and his assumpsit for five pounds on account of Benjamin Wade as well as for five thousand seven hundred & thirteen pounds of Petersburg inspected Crop tobacco (to be settled at thirty four shillings per hundred) it being the ballance (sic) of an Execution of Matt Brooks's against Charles Williamson & the said Greenhill with all costs to be added and in consequence of the said Execution being stayed or part paid by the said Thomas Saunders, he the said Joseph Greenhill doth now stand indebted unto the said Thomas Saunders, for that also . . . hath granted, bargained, sold and confirmed unto the said Hubbard Saunders . . . the following property (to wit) three negro fellows namely Harry, Simon & Amos to the said Hubbard Saunders . . . UPON TRUST and confidence that he will on or after the twentieth day of November next expose as much of the above said property to Sale at publick auction for cash as will satisfy the demands of the above said Executor and costs & faithfully pay the same unto the above said Thomas Saunders and that on the fifth day of April next or after that he will expose as much of the remainder of the above said property to sale at publick auction for cash after giving ten days publick notice as will satisfy the demands of the above said Thomas Saunders . . . and out of such sale first pay the said Thomas Saunders whatever may be due him and the expense of Recording this Indenture and the contingent charges of the Sale & if there be enough and return the overplus of therebe any, and if there should not be enough the said Greenhill doth by these presents oblige himself . . . to make up the deficiency . . . This Indenture Tripartite made this twenty third day of September in the eleventh year of the Commonwealth and in the year 1786 BETWEEN Ann Jones of the County of Brunswick widow of the first part and Lazarous Maddox of the County of Lunenburg of the second part and Thomas Edmunds gentleman of the County of Brunswick of the third part WHEREAS a marriage by the grace of God shortly intended to be solemnized between the said Lazarous Maddox and the said Ann Jones and for as much as the said Ann Jones in her own right is entitled to four horses and sundry other Estate as late wife and now Widow of John Robert Jones deceased and by his last Will & Testament bearing date the fourth Day of June in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand seven hundred & seventy five and duly proved and Recorded in the County Court of Brunswick is justly entitled to and stands seized and possessed of and in one third part of the personal Estate and one third part of the land & negroes for life whereof the said John Robert Jones was entitled to & died seized and possessed of consisting of one tract of land lying and being in the County of Brunswick containing by estimation four hundred acres . . . and two Negroes Dick & Sam and sundry sorts of household & kitchen furniture and plantation tools and utensils of husbandry and whereas it is mutually agreed between the said Ann Jones and the said Lazarous Maddox prior to the said intended marriage taking place that notwithstanding the solemnization of the said marriage, yet that the said Lands, Slaves & personal Estate of every sort part & parcel shall remain and continue to be notwithstanding the said marriage for her the said Ann Jones's sole & separate use & property free from the Debts contracts or intermeddling of her intended husband . . . and to be by her disposed of as she shall think proper . . . for and in consideration of the premises and that the same shall & may be proformed (six) Lawfully employed with and accomplished to the full intent & true meaning of the parties and every of them as also for and in Consideration of the sum of five shillings by the said Thomas Edmunds Gentleman to the said Ann Jones paid . . . hath granted, bargained, transferred & confirmed unto the said Thomas Edmunds gentleman . . . all that the herein before mentioned Land & Slaves and personal Estate to her the said Ann Jones belonging as well such thereof as she claims & holds and hath a right to enjoy under the said Will & Testament of her said husband John Robert Jones deceased as all other Estate, money, goods, chattels that she hath a right to hold & enjoy by any other way or means whatsoever for him the said Thomas Edmunds Gentleman . . . to hold & possess to and for the following use trust & purpose that is to say, for the sole & separate use & behoof of the said Ann Jones free from the Debts, contracts, controle or intermeddling of the said Lazarous Maddox, her intended husband . . . This Indenture made this twenty ninth Day of April 1786 BETWEEN Nathaniel Lucas of the County of Brunswick of the one part and Daniel Fisher Esquire of the County of Greensville of the other Part whereas the said Nathaniel Lucas was appointed Collector of the Revenue Tax for the year one thousand seven hundred and Eighty one and one thousand seven hundred and eighty two for the said County of Greensville and James Wall and James Mason now deceased having become his securities and the said James Wall and William Mason one of the Executors of the said James Mason deceased conceiving some danger of being liable to some damage in consequence thereof This Indenture therefore . . . that as well for the indeminification of the said James Wall . . . as also for the indemnification of the Estate and Executors of the said James Mason deceased in the premises aforesaid as for the consideration of the sum of five shillings to the said Nathaniel Lucas in hand paid by the said Daniel Fisher . . . doth grant Bargain and sell unto the said Daniel Fisher . . . the following tract of Land (to wit) All that certain tract whereon he the said Nathaniel Lucas at present resides lying and being on the East side Shining Creek in the aforesaid County of Brunswick containing by Estimation two hundred and thirty four acres . . . bounded by the Lands of Robert Turnbull, James Lucas, Isaac Anderson, Owen Strange, John Ingram, and Mathew Laffoon, likewis four Negroes namedly London, Ned, Lucy and Ben . . .in trust the said Daniel Fisher and his Heirs to make sale thereof at such times as the said James Wall and William Mason shall direct for the purposes of their indemnification in the Premises aforesaid so as that the said Land and other premises shall be advertised one month before the Day of Sale which sale is to be for ready money or at such credit as the said James Wall and William mason shall order or direct and at the Courthouse of the said County of Brunswick and the money so made by such sales to be paid into the hands of the said James Wall or William Mason . . . or so much thereof as may be sufficient for the indemnification of the said James Wall and William Mason Executors of the said James Mason deceased . . . This Indenture made this twenty fifth Day of October 1786 BETWEEN William Newsum and Mary his wife of the Borough of Norfolk of the one part and George Trotter of the County of Burnsiwck of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred pounds thirteen shillins and four pence . . . doth covenant, bargain and sell alien release and confirm unto the said George Trotter . . . a Tract or parcel of Land situate lying and being in the County of Brunswick aforesaid on the North side of Waqua Creek containing by estimation three hundred and one acres . . . and bounded as follows To wit BEGINNING where William Walkers line crosses the road near the aforesaid Creek thence N nine degrees East sixty poles to a white oak, thence North seventy six degrees west one hundred and ten poles to a red oak thence north seventy six degrees west one hundred and sixty seven poles to a spanish oak thence south fifty six degrees west one hundred sixty seven poles to William Lambert's corner Turkey oak thence along Lamberts line N seven and one half degrees East three hundred and forty four poles to Richard Lamberts corner shrub oak thence along his said line south thirty two and one half degrees East seventy two poles to a white oak in a branch, thence down the said branch to the Rocky run thence up the said run to a poplar in George Trotter's line thence along the said Trotters line south sixty eight degrees East two hundred and sixty poles to a red oak thence North five and one half degrees East fifteen poles to a red oak down thence North seventy two and one half degrees East thirty six poles to a shrub oak on the road thence up the said Road to the BEGINNING . . . Memorandum That on the day of [blank] in the year of our Lord God one thousand seven Hundred and eighty six I William Newsum did by turf and twig deliver unto the within named George Trotter possession and seisin of the Land and Premises within mention To have and to hald to the said George Trotter his Heirs and Assigns forever to the true intent and meaning of the within written Deed. This Indenture was proved by the oaths of Benjamin Lewis, John Flood Edmunds and Thomas Penn witnesses thereto & together with the Commission annexed for taking the acknowledgment and privy examination of Mary the wife of the said William Newsum and the Certificate of the execution thereof ordered to be Recorded. Hansford and Paul Proby Gentlmen Greeting whereas William Newsum and Mary his wife of the Borough of Norfolk by their certain Indenture of Bargain and Sale bearing date the 27 Day of December 1786 have sold and conveyed unto George Trotter of the County of Brunswick the fee simple Estate of three hundred and one Acres of Land . . . and whereas the said Mary cannot conveniently travel to our Court . . . to make her acknowledgment . . . therefore we do give unto you or any two ofor more of you the power to receive the acknowledgment which the said Mary shall be willing to make . . . and we do therefore command you that you do Peronsally go to the said Mary and receive her acknowledgment . . . the 27th Day of December 1786. By Virtue of this Commission to us directed we the Subscribers have privily examined Mary wife of the within named William Newsum . . . and have received her acknowledgment of the Indenture . . . certified under our hands and seals this Day of 178 [sic].
