THE COMMONWEALTH of Virginia to John Rone, James Ruffin and David Parnel Gent. of King William County Greeting whereas Sterling Ruffin Esq. & Alice his wife of the County of King William by their certain Indenture of Bargain and Sale bearing date the 19th Day of May 1789 have sold and conveyed unto Thomas Saunders of Brunswick County the fee simple estate of one hundred and ninety two acres of land with the appurtenances lying and being in the said County of Brunswick and whereas the said Alice Ruffin cannot conveniently travel to our Court . . . to make acknowledgment of the said conveyance . . . therefore we do give unto you or any two or more of you full power to receive the acknowledgment which the said Alice Ruffin shall be willing to make before you of the conveyance aforesaid . . . and we do therefore command you that you do personally go to the said Alice Ruffin and receive her acknowledgment of the same and examine her privitely and apart from the said Sterling her husband . . . the 20th of October 1789. KING WILLIAM Pursuant to the within commission to us and others directed went to the house of Sterling Ruffin within mentioned and separate and apart from the said Sterling examined the within named Alice his wife touching her relinquishment of her right of dower in the land contained in the deed and whether she is willing the same should be recorded for answer she saith that she does release the same freely and voluntarily without the threats or persuasions of the said Sterling her husband and is willing that the same shall be recorded given under hands & seals this 5th Day of February 1790. This Indenture made this thirteenth Day of December 1788 BETWEEN Zachariah Sims and Mary his wife of the County of Brunswick of the one part and John Camp of the County of Greensville of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred pounds . . . do grant bargain sell alien enfeoff and confirm unto the said John Camp . . . all that tract or parcel of Land whereon the said Zachariah now resides contains by estimation one hundred acres . . . lying and being in the aforesaid County of Brunswick and bounded as follows (to wit) BEGINNING at a pine on Eaytons Road in Drury Mores line thence by Mores line to a corner hicory in Beverly Randles line thence by sd. Randles line to a corner red oak in James Randles line thence by James Randles line to a spanish oak a corner in John Neils line thence by Neils line to Eaytons Road aforesaid thence down the road to the BEGINNING . . . This Indenture of bargain and sale from Griffin Stith & Frances his wife of the one part and Buckner Stith, Junr. of the other part was acknowledged by the said Griffin to be his act & deed and ordered to be recorded. This Indenture made this twenty third Day of November 1789 BETWIXT John Mitchel of the County of Brunswick and Commonwealth of Virginia of the one part and George Torrance of the County of Prince George of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and twenty nine pounds eight shillings and seven pence which he the said John Mitchel owes and is justly indebted to Robert Turnbull of the County of P. George and which the said John Mitchel honestly desires to secure and pay to him and for and in consideration of the further sum of five shillings . . . doth grant bargain sell and confirm to the said George Torrance the following tract or parcel lying and being in the County of Brunswick on the waters of Shining Creek bounded by the lands of William Thornton, Ephraim Parham & George Avery on the South side of the creek and which the said Mitchel purchased of Edward Goodrich and which the said Goodrich bought of Zebulon Lewis containing by estimation one hundred & forty acres . . . upon trust nevertheless that the said George Torrance . . . shall after the first day of October next ensuing assoon as the said George Torrance shall think fit or the said John Mitchel shall request the same (which ever of these circumstances shall first happen) sell for the best price that can be got after giving ten days public notice the said lands or any part or number thereof he may think proper and out of the money arising from such sale or sales discharge satisfy & pay to the said Robert Turnbull . . . the above mentioned sum of one hundred and twenty nine pounds eight /7 with interest . . . This Indenture made this twelfth Day of December 1789 BETWEEN Nathaniel Mason and Judith his wife of the County of Brunswick and State of Virginia of the one part William Vaughan of the County and State aforesaid of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of twenty seven pounds ten shillings . . . doth grant bargain & sell alien enfeoff release and confirm unto the said William Vaughan . . . one certain tract or parcel of land in the County and State aforesaid on Beddingfields Creek containing twenty acres . . . and bounded as followeth (to wit) BEGINNING at a corner pine below the said Vaughans mill on Beddingfields Creek thence up the said creek as it meanders to a willow oak on the creek side nearly against Jesse Brewers & the said Vaughans corner on the opposite side of the creek thence a South corus [sic] eight poles to a corner pine thence South ten degrees East forty two poles thence South forty degrees East twenty one poles to three white oaks thence South seventy degrees East thirty eight poles to a pine thence South fifty degrees East ten poles to a white oak thence North twenty two degrees East fourteen poles to a spanish oak thence South eighty degrees East twenty eight poles to a white oak thence along a line of marked trees to a corner hicory near the mill dam thence down the side of the hill to a pine a corner tree thence to the FIRST STATION . . . THE COMMONWEALTH of Virginia To James Fletcher & Richard Fletcher Gent. Greeting whereas Nathaniel Mason and Judith his wife of the County of Brunswick by their certain Indenture of Bargain & Sale bearing date the twenty first Day of June 1789 have sold unto William Vaughan of the same County the fee simple estate of twenty eight acres of land with the appurtenances lying and being in the County of Brunswick and whereas the said Judith cannot conveniently travel to our Court . . . to make acknowledgment of the said conveyance therefore we do give unto you or any two or more of you power to receive the acknowledgment which the said Judith shall be willing to make before you . . . and we do therefore command you that you do personally go to the said Judith and receive her acknowledgment of the same and examine her privitely & apart from the said Nathaniel Mason her said husband . . . the 4th Day of June 1790. This is to certify that we James Fletcher & Richard Fletcher have attended at the house of Nathaniel Mason and in private examined Judith Mason wife of the said Nathaniel Mason and then and there took her relinquishment of dower to the land sold by the said Nathaniel Mason to William Vaughan according to law . . . This Indenture of Bargain and Sale was acknowledged by Nathaniel Mason a party thereto to be his act and deed and together with a Commission and Certificate of the acknowledgment & privy examination of Judith the wife of the said Nathaniel Mason are ordered to be recorded. This Indenture made this thirteenth Day of June 1783 BETWEEN Peyton Skipwith now of Meclinburg [sic] County of the one part and Lewis Parham of the County of Brunswick of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the just sum of six hundred pounds . . . doth give grant bargain and sell unto the said Lewis Parham . . . a certain tract or parcel of land situate lying and being in the County of Brunswick on Nottoway River and bounded as follows (to wit) BEGINNING at Samuel Harwells uper [sic] corner red oak & percimmon [sic] on the brink of the river aforesaid thence along the said Harwells uper line South thirteen degrees West one hundred & sixty poles to his corner between several trees chopt inwards, and a stake thence South five degrees East two hundred & forty eight poles to a small hicory upon the brink Stony Hill Run thence up Stony Hill Run as it meanders two hundred and ninety six poles to a corner ash above the Five Spring thence North five hundred & forty six poles to a corner red oak thence East one hundred fourteen poles to a large red oak upon the river above the mouth of a small gut thence down the river as it meanders to the BEGINNING containing seven hundred and ninety two acres . . . This Indenture of bargain & sale from Peyton Skipwith to Lewis Parham was proved by the oath of George Cryer a witness thereto & having been proved on the 25th Day of June 1787 by the oaths of Lewis Parham, Senr. & William Lucas also witnesses thereto the same is ordered to be recorded. This Indenture made this 13th Day of June 1783 BETWEEN Peyton Skipwith now of Meclinburg County of the one part and Lewis Parham of the County of Brunswick of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred & fifty pounds . . . doth give grant bargain and sell unto the said Lewis Parham . . . a certain tract or parcel of Land situate lying and being in the County of Brunswick on both sides of Stony Hill Run containing four hundred and twenty four acres (being part of a certain tract of land containing by estimation seven hundred & twenty four acres) and bounded as by Patent granted to William Wray bearing date at Williamsburg the 28th Day of September 1730 . . . Signed by Peyton Skipwith and witnessed by Lewis Parham, Senr., Wm. Lucas, and Geo. Cryer. Brunswick County Court July the 26th 1790. This Indenture of bargain & sale from Peyton Skipwith to Lewis Parham was proved by the oath of George Cryer a witness thereto and having been proved on the 25th of June 1787 by the oaths of Lewis Parham, Senr. & William Lucas also witnesses thereto the same is ordered to be recorded. This Indenture made this twenty fourth Day of March 1774 BETWEEN Peter Poythrefs of the County of Prince George of the one part and Christopher Haskins of the County of Brunswick of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of nine pounds . . . doth grant bargain and sell alien and confirm unto the said Christopher Haskins . . . six acres of land . . . lying & being on Nottoway River and in the aforesaid County of Brunswick and bounded as followeth (to wit) BEGINNING on the said Nottoway River from thence along a line of marked trees on the said Christopher Haskins's line to the Rockey Run thence down the said run to the said Nottoway River thence up the said river to the BEGINNING . . . This Indenture made this the twentieth Day of March 1790 BETWEEN John Davis & Martha Floyd mother to the sd. Davis of the County of Brunswick of the one part & James Batte of the sd. County of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of two & twenty five pounds . . . doth by the presents grant bargain and sell unto the sd. James Batte . . . one certain piece parcel tract of land with the appurtenances thereof lying and being in the County of Brunswick containing two hundred acres . . . and bounded as followeth to wit BEGINNING at the mouth of a small branch that entrys into Avins Creek thence up the sd. Creek to Mrs. Joseph Ezells line thence along the sd. Ezells line to Mr. Wm. Batte decd. line thence along the sd. Wm. Batte decd. line to Capt. John Hickses line thence to Mr. Nathaniel Robersons line to the mouth of the branch at the BEGINNING . . . Signed by John Davis and Martha Floyd and witnessed by John Gabard, William Ellies (his mark) and Nancey Davis (her mark). Brunswick County Court July the 26th 1790. This Indenture of bargain & sale was acknowleged by John Davis & Marth [sic] Floyd parties thereto to be their act & deed and ordered to be recorded. Deed Book 14, page 613. This Indenture made this twenty third of November 1789 BETWEEN William Hines & Michael Bailey Executors of Benjamin Lanier dec'd. of the one part and James Bafs of the other part whereas the said Benjamin Lanier dec'd. did by his Last Will and Testament give and devised to his executors or to such of them as to qualify to his said Last Will all the land that he did hold in the County of Brunswick to be by them sold for the best price that could be got and the money arising from such sale to be applied towards the discharge of his just debts and he the said Benjamin did by his said Last Will empower and authorized the executors that should qualify to execute the same to convey in fee simple to any purchaser or purchasers the whole or any part of the said lands reference to the said Will which is duly recorded in the Court of the County of Sussex will fully and at large appear now this indenture Witnesseth that the said land being this day exposed to sale to the highest bidder and the said James Bafs became the purchaser thereof for the valuable consideration of forty six pounds five shillings . . . do grant bargain sell alien enfeoff and confirm unto the said James Bafs . . . a certain tract or parcel of land situate lying and being in the County of Brunswick & on the North side of Meherrin River containing three hundred and twenty three acres . . . and bounded by the lines of the said Bafs, John Blick, James & William Maclin & the land lately patented by the said Benjamin Lanier and the Three Creeks it being the tract of land patented by John Maclin dec'd. and by his son Frederick Maclin conveyed to the said Benjamin Lanier being part of the land which the said Lanier by his said Last Will authorized and empowered the said Hines and Bailey to dispose of and convey as aforesaid . . . This Indenture of bargain & sale was proved by the oaths of John B. Goldsberry, James Bruce and William Atkison three of the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded . . . Deed Book 14, page 615. This Indenture made this fifteenth Day of February 1790 BETWEEN Thomas Lundie of the County of Brunswick of the one part & John Loyd of the County of Henry on the other . . . for and in consideration of the sum of twenty seven pounds four shillings specie which sum the said John Loyd is justly indebted to the said Thomas Lundie & honestly desires to pay and secure to him and for and in the farther consideration of the sum of five shillings . . . doth grant bargain sell and confirm to the said Thomas Lundie . . . one Negroe woman named Hannah & her increase . . . upon trust nevertheless . . . that the said Thomas Lundie [shall] after the first day of December [ blank ] seven hundred & ninety [blank ] . . . sell for the best price that can be gotten after giving ten days publick notice the said Negroe Hannah . . . The purport of the within indenture is to secure the payment of twenty seven pounds and four shillings to the within mentioned Thomas Lundie & both parties acknowledged its force upon the following conditions (vizt) that the within mentioned John Loyd is to pay one half of the above sum of twenty seven pounds four shillings on or before first day of December 1790 & the other half on the on or before the first day of December 1791 and Thomas Lundie agree to take produce of the Country or any other article that the parties can agree upon either at market price or according to the valuation of men appointed by them in witness whereof the above mentioned parties have hereunto set their hands this fifteenth Day of February 1790. This Indenture made this third Day of August 1790 BETWEEN Sack Pinington of the County of Brunswick of the one part and George Malone of the same County . . . for and in consideration of the just and full sum of sixty pounds . . . doth give grant bargain sell alien release and confirm to him the said George Malone . . . one certain tract peace or parcel of land situate lying and being in the County of Brunswick and bounded as followeth (to wit) BEGINNING at a walnut tree on Taylors Creek near the mouth of a branch being the first branch that makes into the Creek above the mouth thence a new line to a pine in James Smiths line thence along Smiths line South fifty degrees West to a white oak in Rubin Malones line thence along the said Malones line to Taylors Creek thence down the meanders of creek to the BEGINNING containing by estimation sixty five acres . . . This Indenture made the first Day of March 1789 BETWEEN Edward Avery of the County of Prince George of the one part and Edward Avery of the County of Brunswick and Parish of St. Andrews of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of fifty pounds . . . doth grant bargain and sell alien release and confirm unto the said Edward Avery . . . one certain tract or parcel of land containing one hundred acres . . . situate lying and being in the County of Brunswick aforesaid and as followeth, to wit, BEGINNING at a dead corner hicory in Wm. Edwards line thence by John Averys line to a corner pine in Tatums line thence to a corner pine in Isaac Houses line thence along Houses line to a corner in these threes to a corner dead pine in Houses line thence to a corner hickory in his fathers line thence to a corner live oak in a branch on Edwards line keeping up the said branch to an other corner oak in Edwards line thence down Edwards line to the FIRST STATION . . . This Indenture was proved according to law by the oath of Charles King Junr. a witness thereto and having been proved on the 26th Day of July last by the oath of James Bafs & Tilman Avery also witnesses thereto the same is ordered to be recorded. This Indenture made this twenty seventh of March 1782 BETWEEN Laurance House of the Parish of Meherrin & County of Brunswick of the one part and Joseph Willis of the Parish and County aforesaid of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of eighty five pounds . . . have given granted and bargained sold & convaid [sic] confirmed afsigned and let over to the sd. Joseph Willis . . . one certain tract or parcel of land lying & bein [sic] in the County aforesaid containing two hundred & forty seven acres . . . it being part of a tract of land granted by patent to Samuel House refferance thereunto being had will more fully and at large appear & BEGINNING at the fork of Little Creek thence up the sd. creek to a corner spanish oak adjoining Thos. Claiborne thence along the sd. line to a white oak corner thence along his line to a corner pine adjoining Tharps thence along the said the sd. line to the other part of the Little Creek thence down the sd. creek to the BEGINNING . . . THE COMMONWEALTH of Virginia To Binns Jones & Edward Birchett Gentlemen Greeting whereas John Mitchell and Diana his wife of the County of Brunswick by their certain Indenture of Bargain & Sale bearing date the 20th Day of February 1789 have sold unto Benjamin Lewis of the aforesaid County the fee simple estate of one hundred & twenty three acres of land . . . lying & being in the County of Brunswick and whereas the said Diana cannot conveniently travel to our Court . . . to make acknowledgment of the said conveyance therefore we do give unto you or any two or more of you power to receive the acknowledgment which the said Diana shall be willing to make before you . . . & we do therefore command you that you do personally go to the said Diana and receive her acknowledgment of the same & examine her privately & apart from the said John Mitchel her husband . . . the twenty third Day of January 1790. By virtue of this Commission to us directed we the subscribers have privily examined Diana Mitchell wife of the within named John Mitchell . . . and have received her acknowledgment of the Indenture hereunto annexed . . . certified under hands and seals this twenty second Day of September 1790. Wesleys notes on the New Testament and form between the sermons and upon further trust and confidence that as often as any of these trustees or the trustees for the time being shall die or cease to be a member of the Methodist Church the rest of the trustees or of the trustees for the time being as soon as conveniently may be shall and may choose another trustee or trustees in order to keep up the number of five trustees forever . . .
