Hicks, John Cook, Myhill Collier, Robert Hicks, John Barner, Hannah Reese, children of Benjamin Harrison, deceased late of the County of Brunswick and Robert Hicks, John Lett Cook, John Hicks, Miles Collier, & John Barner are those who married to the daughters of the said Benja. Harrison, dec'd. we the said persons for sundry reasons and considerations but more especially to fulfill and es_ply with the real intent and desire of our father Benjamin Harrison dec'd which we believe was his intention for some years before he departed this life So that we and each of us as above mentioned do freely and voluntarily of our own free will and consent give grant & confirm by these presents unto Lucy Barner, the daughter of John Barner one Negro boy named Fed which was the property of our father Benja. Harrison, dec'd. to her and her heirs forever as we have the strongest circumstances to believe it was our father Benja. Harrison intent & desire to have devised him the said Negro boy Fed to her the said Lucy Barner in his Last Will and Testament but thro a mistake as we do expect he did not. We the persons above named do hereby jointly and severally agree and openly declare by these presents that we do freely clearly and absolutely give grant & confirm unto Lucy Barner the said Negroe boy named Fed to her and her heirs forever to her and their own proper use and behoof forever to do use and dispose at her and their will and pleasure without any manner of challenge claims demand of any of us above mentioned or of any other person or persons for us or in our names by our calls means consent or procurement but that she the said Lucy Barner shall and may peaceably and quietly possess and enjoy the said Negroe named Fed as free and clear from the claim right title or demand of us or any of us our heirs executors and administrators from time to time and at all times forever as witness our hands and seals this ____ day of April 1790. Brunswick County Court June 20th 1790. This Deed of Gift was proved according to law by the oaths of Theophilus Harrison & Wylie Harrison, two of the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded. This Indenture made this twenty fifth Day of November 1790 BETWEEN Edward Roberson of the County of Brunswick of the one part and John Stainback of the other part . . . that I the said Edward Roberson for and in consideration of the love good will and affection which I have and bear towards my grandson John Stainback of the County aforesaid . . . by these presents do fully clearly and absolutely give grant and confirm unto the said John Stainback . . . a certain tract of or parcel of land whereon the sd. John Stainback now liveth containing three hundred acres . . . and further know ye that I Edward Roberson have put the said John Stainback in full quiet and peasable possession of the said land and bounded as followeth (to wit) BEGINNING at a gum on Tatams Branch thence along Jones line to a corner ded [sic] red oake, thence near a North corse [sic] to a corner white oake in a branch thence along sd. Jones's line nearly an East corse [sic] to a small branch thence up the said branch to a large pine nearly a North corse [sic]; thence along the sd. Jones line across the sd. Jones new rode [sic] to a corner read [sic] oake thence turning nearly a South course along Clacks line to the old courthouse rode [sic] thence across the said rode [sic] on Ruffins line to a corner post oake on Britton Peeples line thence nearly an East course across the sd. old courthouse rode [sic] to a corner post oak on the Half Mile Branch, thence down the said branch to a corner post oak on said branch or the line cauld [sic] Williamsons line and the said Edward Robersons thence down the said branch to the BEGINNING . . . This Indenture made this 26th Day of November 1790 BETWEEN Henry Jones & Amy his wife of the County of Greenville [sic] of the one part & Daniel Harrison of the County of Brunswick of the other part . . . for & in the consideration of the sum of five shillings . . . do grant bargain sell alien & confirm unto the said Daniel Harrison . . . a certain tract or parcel of land lying & being in the County of Brunswick containing by Estimation one hundred acres . . . it being part of the land granted to the said Henry Jones by Patent bounded as follows, to wit, BEGINNING at the Fort Road corner white oak from thence North to a srub [sic] white oak on Daniel Harrisons line thence along Harrisons line East to a corner white scrub oak, thence South along Harrisons line to the said road at a corner black jack, thence up the said road West to a corner white oake at the BEGINNING . . . This Indenture of Bargain & Sale was acknowledged by Henry Jones & Amy his wife parties thereto to be their act & deed & ordered to be recorded. Previous to which acknowledgment the said Amy being privately examined as the Law directs did voluntarily assent thereto. Deed Book 15, page 3. This Indenture made the 22nd Day of November 1790 BETWEEN Henry Jones & Amy his wife of the County of Greensville of the one part & Frances Stewart of the County of Brunswick of the other part . . . for & in the consideration of the sum of fifteen pounds . . . do grant bargain sell alien & confirm unto the said Frances Stewart . . . a certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Brunswick part of the tract of land granted to the said Henry Jones by Patent dated the tenth of October one thousand seven hundred & ninety containing by estimation one hundred acres . . . bounded as follows, to wit, BEGINNING at the Fort Road at a corner scrub white oak from thence North to a pine thence North to a corner pine on Harrisons line being the dividing line between the said Frances & Henry Jones thence East along Harrisons line to a scrub white oak thence South to a pine on the said line thence to the said road thence West up the said road to the BEGINNING . . . This Indenture of Bargain & Sale was acknowledged by Henry Jones & Amy his wife parties thereto to be their act & deed & ordered to be recorded. To all to whom these presents shall come greeting Know ye that I Robert Hicks of Brunswick County in the State of Virginia have named appointed & constituted & do by these presents name appoint and constitute Abner Hill of Greensville in the said State of Virginia by Attorney with full power and authority for me and in my name to demand & receive all and every sum or sums of money or other property which was belonging to or owing to my son Harrison Hicks deceased & late of [---] County in the State of South Carolina and in my name as my attorney give sufficient receipts for all sums of money or other property to any person or persons of whom he shall receive any money or other property that is or my be owing to or belonging to the estate of my said deceased son Harrison Hicks & I do hereby give and grant to my said attorney full & compleat [sic] power & authority to use and exercise all such acts and devises in the law as shall be necessary in the premises as fully as myself could act & do if I was personally present hereby ratifying confirming & allowing all and whatsoever my said attorney shall lawfully do or cause to be done therein by virtue of these presents. Brunswick County Court November 22nd 1790. This Letter of Attorney was proved according to Law by the oaths of George Hicks & Binns Jones two of the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded. This Indenture made the 15th Day of May 1790 BETWEEN Drury Buckner Stith & Fanny his wife & Lucy Stith the mother of the said Drury Buckner of the County of Brunswick of the one part & Clayton Abernathy of the same County of the other part . . . for & in the consideration of the sum of sixty one pounds four shillings . . . hath granted bargained & sold aliened & confirmed unto the said Clayton Abernathy . . . a certain parcel of land containing one hundred & sixteen (?) acres situate in the said County of Brunswick on both sides of Stith Road and bounded as followeth, BEGINNING at the said Drury B. Stiths, Katharine Stiths & Thomas Stiths Senrs. corner black jack thence Thomas Stith Seniors corner black jack thence a new line North forty six degrees West thro [sic] the old field 115 poles to a maple on a small branch of Rabon's Branch near the said road thence down the said branch as it meanders to a limn (sic) of a fallen maple at the mouth of another small branch thence up the other small branch as it meanders to a small maple where Walkers line crosses the same thence along Walkers line North thirty seven degrees East forty seven poles to the said road at Miles Williams's corner black jack thence along the said Williams line the same course continued one hundred & two poles to a small dead black jack South forty nine degrees East one hundred & twelve poles to a dead shrub oak South nine and a half degrees East one hundred & twenty poles to a black jack in Catharine Stiths line thence along her line South sixty seven degrees West twenty six poles to the BEGINNING . . . This Indenture of Bargain & Sale was acknowledged by Drury Buckner Stith one of the parties thereto to be his act and deed & ordered to be recorded. Deed Book 15, page 7. This Indenture made this 3rd Day of November 1790 BETWEEN James Warden [Wasden] & wife Lucy Warden [Wasden] of Brunswick County of the one part & John Tyas of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred pounds . . . doth bargain & sell unto the said John Tyus . . . a certain tract or parcel of land lying & being in the County of Brunswick bounded as follows, Viz, BEGINNING at a red oak on Thomas Waltons line thence along Waltons line to a corner white oak thence along the same line to a new chopt line & down that line to Quarrel Swamp & up the swamp to the BEGINNING containing by estimation two hundred & fifty acres . . . Signed by James Wasdin [Wardin] and Lucy Wasdin [Wardin] (her mark) and witnessed by John Walton, Junior, Thomas Phillips and Thomas Walton. Brunswick County Court November 22nd 1790. This Indenture of Bargain & Sale was acknowledged by James Wasden party thereto to be his act and deed and ordered to be recorded. Deed Book 15, page 8. This Indenture made the 15th Day of December 1789 BETWEEN Benjamin Ivy Senior of the County of Brunswick of the one part and Benjamin Ivey Junior of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of eighty eight pounds eight shillings & three pence . . . doth by these presents grant, bargain & sell aliene [sic] enfeoff and confirm unto the said Benjamin Ivey Junior . . . all that tract or parcel of land lying & situate as follows, to wit, the dividing line between the said James Ivey Senior and Benjamin Ivy, Junior BEGINNING at the mouth of the spring branch where it runs into Janitto Creek & runs up the said branch as it winds a South course to the head of the said at a hickory thence straight on the same course to a red oak on the former line thence on the same line to the BEGINNING containing 290 acres . . . and being on the South side of Meherrin River in Meherrin Parish in the County of Brunswick . . . This Indenture of Bargain & Sale was proved according to law by the oaths of Thomas W. Ivy a witness thereto & having been proved on the 23rd Day of March last by the oaths of Wilie Harrison & Abram Vaughan also witnesses thereto the same is ordered to be recorded. Deed Book 15, page 10. This Indenture made this 20th Day of May 1790 BETWEEN Heartwell Rains of the County of Brunswick in Virginia of the one part and Nathaniel Thrift of the County of Northampton in North Carolina of the other part . . . whereas the said Heartwell Raines is justly indebted to the said Nathaniel Thrift in the just & full sum of ninety five pounds four shillings and two pence . . . which he honestly desires to pay . . . for and in consideration of the sum of five shillings . . . to him in hand paid by Francis Dancy . . . doth grant bargain & confirm unto the said Francis Dancy . . . six Negroes Vizt. Isabell York Betty Dick Juno & Nicholas with their increase . . . upon trust nevertheless that the said Fras. Dancey shall at any time after the 15th of March in the year 1792 when the said Heartwell Raines or Nathaniel Thrift . . . shall request the same or the said Francis Dancy shall think proper . . . shall sell for the best price that can be gotten to the highest bidder after giving ten days publick notice the before mentioned property . . . This Indenture of Deed and Trust was proved by the oath of Richard Putney a witness thereto & having been proved on 25th Day of October last by the oath of William Jones also a witness thereto the same is ordered to be recorded. KNOW all men by these presents that I John Mize of the County of Brunswick of State of Virginia for and in consideration of the sum of four pounds thirteen shillings & nine pence . . . in hand paid . . . by William Shelton of the said State & County aforesaid . . . do bargain sell & deliver unto the said William Shelton to feather beds & one sorrel mare . . . I have hereunto set my hand & seal dated this 27th Day of March 1790 . . . Signed by John Mize and witnessed by Geo. Hicks and Danl. Shelton. Brunswick County Court November 22nd 1790. This Bill of Sale was proved by the oaths of George Hicks & Daniel Shelton witnesses thereto & ordered to be recorded. Deed Book 15, page 13. This Indenture made this 22nd Day of December 1787 BETWEEN John Wilks and Elizabeth his wife of the County of Brunswick of the part & Burwell Wilks of the same County of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred & twenty six pounds . . . doth grant bargain & sell unto the said Burwell Wilks . . . one certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County aforesaid and bounded by Colo. John Jones's line by Wm. Caudles by Burwell Wilks's and by Joseph and Thos. Wilks's line containing one hundred & twenty six acres . . . Signed by John Wilks and Betsy Wilks and witnessed by John Jones, Junior, Ephraim Jackson, and Thomas Stegale. Brunswick County Court December 27th 1790. This Indenture of Bargain & Sale was acknowledged by John Wilks & Betsey his wife parties thereto be their act & deed & ordered to be recorded. Previous to which acknowledgment the said Betsey being privily examined as the law directs did voluntarily assent thereto. Deed Book 15, page 13. This Indenture made and entered the 3rd Day of December 1790 BETWEEN Myles Green & Elizabeth his wife of the County of Brunswick of the one part and Sterling Peebles of the same County of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred & fifty pounds . . . doth grant bargain sell infeoff [sic] & confirme [sic] unto the aforesaid Peebles . . . a certain tract or pasel [sic] of land situate lying and being in the aforesaid County of Brunswick and bounding and abutting as follows, that is to say, BEGINNING at a poplar on Wyches Branch Sterling Peebles line thence along his line North thirty nine degrees East one hundred twenty eight poles to a scrub oak thence North three degrees East fifty one poles to a white oak thence along Wilkins's line North fifty five degrees West one hundred seventy two poles to red oak thence South thirty two degrees West one hundred seventy eight poles to a pine thence a new line South fifty seven degrees East one hundred & seventy eight poles to the BEGINNING the same containing one hundred & ninety seven acres . . . Signed by Myles Green and Elisabeth Green and witnessed by Wm. Edwd. Brodnax, Britain Peebles, and Mark Green. Brunswick County Court December 27th 1790. This Indenture of Bargain & Sale was acknowledged by Myles Green and Elizabeth his wife to be their act and deed & ordered to be recorded. Previous to which acknowledgment the said Elizabeth being privily examined as the law directs did voluntarily assent thereto. Deed Book 15, page 14. KNOW all men by these presents that we Edwd. Robinson & John Stainback both of the County of Brunswick for the natural love and affection which we bear unto our granddaughter and sister Mary Owen of the same County as well as for the consideration of five shillings . . . do give grant bargain and sell unto the said Mary Owen two Negroes to wit a girl named Sall and a boy named Joe . . . we have hereunto set our hands and affixed our seals this 25th Day of November 1790. This Indenture made this Day of 1790 BETWEEN Robert Rivers and his wife Jane of the County of Brunswick of the one part and John Owen of the same County of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of seventy five pounds . . . doth by these presents . . . bargain sell alien enfeoff release and forever make over unto the said John Owen . . . one certain tract or parcel of land situate lying & being in the County aforesaid and on the North side of the Great Creek and bounded as followeth, to wit, BEGINNING where Stainbacks line crosses Gholson Road at a hickory thence down the said road to a pine thence No. 78 [?] eight poles to the head of a small branch thence down the said branch as it meanders to a new made corner great pine thence along a new line So. 35 1/2 W 112 poles to a turkey oak on the said Stainbacks line thence along the said Stainbacks line No. 80 [?] W 56 poles to the BEGINNING being all that tract of one hundred acres of land left the said Robt. This Indenture of Bargain & Sale was acknowledged by Robert Rivers & Jane his wife parties thereto to be their act and deed and ordered to be recorded. Previous to which acknowledgment the said Jane being privily examined as the law directs did voluntarily assent thereto. Deed Book 15, page 17. This Indenture made and entered the 5th Day of May 1790 BETWEEN James Ruffin William Ruffin & Sterling Ruffin sones [sic] of Robert Ruffin dec'd of the one part and Frederick Jones of Dinwiddie of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred & sixty two pounds eight shillings by the said Frederick Jones to the said Ruffins in hand paid . . . doth give grant bargain sell enfeoff & confirm unto the said Frederick Jones . . . a certain tract or parcel of land situate lying and being in Brunswick County on the South side of Dukes Creek abutting and bounded as follows, that is to say, BEGINNING where the main road that leads from Petersburg to the old Courthouse crosseth the said creek thence down the same as it meanders by Parhams mill to Smiths corner thence along Smiths line to Baughs line thence along Baughs to the corner adjoining Clacks land thence along Clacks line to the road aforesaid thence along sd. road to the BEGINNING the same containing by estimation two hundred & ninety nine acres of land . . . This Indenture made this 24th Day of January 1786 BETWEEN Samuel Greenhill of the County of Brunswick of the one part and George Hicks of the said County of the other part . . . that the said Samuel Greenhill and Molley his wife for in consideration of the sum of eight hundred pounds . . . hath given granted and sold aliened infeoffed [sic] and confirmed unto the said George Hicks . . . one certain tract or parcel of land lying & being in the County of Brunswick on both sides of Little Jenetoe Creek containing by estimation eight hundred and twenty eight acres . . . bounded in the manner following, vizt. This Indenture of Bargain & Sale was proved according to law by the oaths of James Hicks, Junior, a witness thereto & having been proved on the 27th of October 1788 by the oaths of Joseph Greenhill and John Hicks also witnesses thereto the same is ordered to be recorded. This Indenture made this 6th Day of July 1790 BETWEEN Thomas Scott and Lucy Scott his wife of the County of Charlotte of the one part and Richard Elliott of the same County of the other part . . . in consideration of the sum of two hundred and fifty pounds . . . secured to be paid by the said Richard to Isaac Read deceased the late husband of the said Sarah Scott in his life time and which the said Thomas Scott & Sarah Scott his wife do by these presents acknowledge . . . do bargain sell and confirm unto the said Richard Elliott . . . a certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Brunswick adjoining the lands of Theo. Field Richard Taliafaro, an entry that did belong to Thomas Stith and the Main Road that leads from Burchs Bridge to Fields Mill and containing by estimation two hundred acres . . . which said tract of land the said Isaac Read in his life time contracted to sell unto the said Richard Elliott & which the said Isaac Read held in right of his then wife now the said Sarah Scott . . . Dabbs witnesses thereto and having been proved on the 26th day of July 1790 by the oath of Clement Read also a witness thereto the same is ordered to be recorded. Deed Book 15, page 22. THE COMMONWEALTH of Virginia To Andw. Meade and John Stith Gentlemen Greeting whereas Griffin Stith & Frances his wife of the County of Brunswick by their certain Indenture of Bargain & Sale bearing date the 18th Day of June 1790 have sold unto Buckner Stith Junior the fee simple estate of three hundred and twenty acres of land with the appurtenances lying and being in the County of Brunswick and where as the sd. Frances cannot conveniently travel to our Court to make acknowledgment of the said conveyance therefore we do give unto you or any two or more of you the power to receive the acknowledgment which the said Frances shall be willing to make before you . . . and we do therefore command you that you do personally go to the said Frances and receive her acknowledgment of the same & examine her privately & part from the said Griffin Stith her husband . . . the 2nd Day of November 1790 . . . By virtue of this Commission to us directed we the subscribers have privily examined Frances Stith the wife of the within named Griffin Stith . . . and have received her acknowledgment . . . certified under our hands & seals this 30th Day of December 1790. This Commission for the taking the acknowledgment and privy examination of Frances Stith wife of Griffin Stith to an Indenture of Bargain & Sale to Buckner Stith, Junior was returned together with a certificate of the execution thereof which is ordered to be recorded. This Indenture made this 11th Day of January 1790 BETWEEN James Williams Green and Elizabeth his wife of the County of Brunswick & State of Virginia of the one part and William Jones of Northampton County & State North Carolina of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred & seventy five pounds . . . doth grant bargain sell deliver and confirm unto the sd. Jones . . . a certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Brunswick containing three hundred & fifty acres . . . and bounded as followeth (to wit) BEGINNING on Cold Water at a hickory stump thence also Phips line to a corner pine to M[ ]pple H. KNOW all men by these presents that I William Connelly of Brunswick County for and in the consideration of the sum of seventy pounds . . . do grant bargain & sell unto John Stith . . . two feather beds and furniture one bay horse saddle & bridle one cow and calf fifteen head of hogs all my blacksmith tools and all my wifes right of her fathers & grandmothers estate when divided . . . in trust nevertheless upon this condition that whereas the said John Stith is and stands security for me on a replevy Bond to Benjamin Ingram for thirty odd pounds and on another Bond to Samuel Glass for ten pounds and whereas I formerly assigned to him a Bond of Samuel Scotts for thirty pounds & he assigned it again to Hinchia Gilliam which Bond probably on the failure of the said Scott he the said John Stith may be obliged to make good and being willing and desirous to indemnify him of and in these premises as above mentioned do by these presents give unto the said John Stith full power & lawful authority whenever he shall may suffer in either of the above instances to take possession of and to sell at publick auction on reasonable notice for ready money any part or the whole of the above mentioned property . . . the 4th Day of February 1791. This Indenture of Bargain & Sale between Hansford Row & Mildred his wife of the one part and James Hicks Senr. of the other part was proved by the oaths of Charles Hicks, Lockey Collier and Bartley Sadler the witnesses thereto & ordered to be recorded. Deed Book 15, page 99. This Indenture made this 15th Day of February 1791 BETWEEN Lewis Brown of the County of Brunswick of the one part and Thos. Lundie of the same County of the other part . . . Lewis Brown for & in consideration of his being justly indebted to Thos. Lundie in the sum of one hundred & sixty five pounds . . . doth sell bargain alien grant & absolutely confirm to the said Thomas Lundie sundry slaves and their future increases, vizt. Tom, Robin, Matthew, Sucky, Jeany, Jeany the lesser & Judy nine head of cattle one horse eight sheep twenty seven hogs three beds and furniture all Bonds due to me & the increase of the said stock of cattle horses sheep & hogs . . . in trust nevertheless that he the said Thomas Lundie shall and will after the first day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred & ninety two or whenever the said Thomas Lundie thinks proper or he the said Lewis Brown requires him which ever of these circumstances first happen sell and expose for the sale for the best price that can be got or had for the same after haven given ten days previous notice the said granted slaves & chattel . . .
