This Indenture of Bargain & Sale between John White of the one part and Elisha Clark of the other part was proved by the oaths of Thomas Clark, Rebecca Hardiway & Salley Rawlings the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded. Deed Book 15, page 102. This Indenture made the 27th Day of June 1791 BETWEEN Benjamin Jones of Brunswick County of the one part and the estate of David Walker late of the said County deceased of the other part . . . whereas the said Benjamin Jones in the lifetime of the said David Walker in consideration of the love and natural affection which he the said Benjamin Jones had and did bear unto the said David Walker his near kinsman & for his better support & preferment in the world & the said Benjamin Jones verbally give unto the said David Walker a water grist mill in the said County on Notoway [sic] River with one acre of land on the North side of the said river in Dinwiddie County appropriated thereto but never made his a legal title . . . the said Benjamin Jones being willing and desirous to confirm the said verbal gift subject to the Will of the said David Walker & to the dower of the widow of the said David Walker . . . as if the legal right and title in fee simple had in the lifetime of the said David Walker been actually made him . . . doth give grant alien and confirm unto the estate of the said David Walker . . . the aforesaid water grist mill & one acres of land on the North side of Notoway River in Dinwiddie County appropriated thereto . . . This Indenture of Bargain & Sale was acknowledged by John Jones Jr. party thereto to be his act and deed and ordered to be recorded. Deed Book 15, page 105. This Indenture made this 25th Day of October 1790 BETWEEN Thomas Claiborne of the County of Brunswick of the one part & John Camp of the County of Greensville of the other part whereas the said Thomas Claiborne stands justly indebted to the said John Camp in the sum of three hundred & fifty pounds . . . and being willing and desirous to secure the payment thereof to the said John Camp hath covenanted to mortgage that tract of land whereon Jason Hand now lives containing six hundred and eighty four acres . . . and bounded by the lines of Joseph Mason Cary James & others . . . for and in consideration of the premises as the further sum of five shillings . . . doth grant bargain and sell unto the said John Camp the above land and premises . . . provided nevertheless and this indenture is upon this condition that if the said Thomas Claibourn do and shall well and truly pay unto the said John Camp . . . the said sum of three hundred & fifty pounds with lawful interest thereon from the 25th day of Decr. one thousand seven hundred and ninety three and all costs and charges of drawing and recording this indenture then this indenture and every thing therein contained shall cease determine be utterly void and of none affect . . . This Indenture made this Day of February 1784 BETWEEN Benjamin Mosely & Jane his wife of Brunswick County in the State of Virginia and Daniel Huff of the County and State of Virginia aforesaid of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of three hundred & five pounds . . . doth grant bargain & sell alien & enfeoff release and confirm unto the said Daniel Huff . . . all that seat tract or parcel of land lying & being in Brunswick County aforesaid and bounded as followeth (to wit) BEGINNING at William Hamiltons corner red oak on the West side of the Lizard Creek thence along a line of marked trees North ward to a corner shrubed white oak from thence along the said line to a forked poplar on the Lizard Creek thence up the said creek to a small white oak corner tree on the same thence along a line of marked trees to a corner hicory thence North eighteen degrees East along a line of marked trees to a corner maple in a bransh [sic] thence North seventy degrees East to a corner shrubed white oak thence South twenty degrees East to a corner red oake thence South west to a corner tree of William Moseley deceased from thence along the line of the said William Moseley deceased to the Little Creek from thence down the Little Creek to the Main Lizard Creek from thence down the sd. Lizard Creek to William Hamilton's line and from thence up the said line to the BEGINNING containing by estimation two hundred & sixty acres . . . Edward Webb and Isaac Mosely being sworn deposeth & saith that they saw Dan Holloway deceased subscribed his name as a witness to this Indenture of Bargain & Sale from Benjamin Moseley and Jane his wife of the one part to Daniel Huff of the other part (at the time they subscribed theirs) and the same having been proven on the 28th Day of June 1784 by the oaths of the said Edmund Webb & Isaac Moseley witnesses thereto is ordered to be recorded. This Indenture made this 21st Day of October 1790 BETWEEN Freeman Jordan of the County of Brunswick of the one part & Randall Rhodes of the County aforesaid of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of forty four pounds ten shillings . . . hath bargained sold and confirmed and said Freeman Jordan for himself and his wife Anne . . . doth by these presents grant bargain sell & confirm unto the said Randall Rhodes . . . one tract of land containing one hundred & seventy eight acres . . . situate lying and being the County of Brunswick in the Parish of Saint Andrews on the South side of Little Cedar Creek and bounded as follows BEGINNING at Thomas Harriss corner white oak on the creek thence along his line North seventy four degrees West twelve poles to his corner white oak on Middle Cedar Creek thence up the sd. creak [sic] to the mouth of a branch just above a large rock thence up the said branch to Henry Maclins corner poplar on the same thence along his line North eighty degrees East one hundred and ninety poles to his corner hicory on Little Cedar Creak [sic] thence down the sd. creak [sic] as it meanders to the BEGINNING . . . This Indenture of Bargain & Sale from Freeman Jordan and Ann his wife of the one part to Randolph Rhodes of the other part was acknowledged by the said Freeman to be his act and deed and ordered to be recorded. Deed Book 15, page 110. THE COMMONWEALTH of Virginia To Chrs. Haskins & John Haskins Gentl. Greeting whereas Freeman Jordan & Ann his wife of the County of Brunswick by their certain Indenture of Bargain & Sale bearing date the 20th Day of October 1790 have sold unto Randolph Rhodes of the County aforesaid the fee simple estate of one hundred and seventy eight acres of land with the appurtenances lying & being in the County of Brunswick and whereas the said Ann Jordan cannot conveniently travel to our Court . . . to make acknowledgment of the said conveyance therefore we do give unto you or any two or more of you power to receive the acknowledgment which the said Ann shall be willing to make before you of the said conveyance . . . and we do therefore command you that you personally go to the said Ann and receive her acknowledgment of the same & examine her privately and apart from the said Freeman Jordan her husband . . . the 1st Day of July in the fifteenth year of our foundation. This Indenture of Bargain & Sale was acknowledged by Edward Dromgoole party thereto to be his act and deed and ordered to be recorded. Deed Book 15, page 113. This Indenture made this 23rd Day of June 1790 BETWEEN Jehue Peebles of the one part and Jenny Peebles & her three sons of the other . . . for the natural love and affection which he beareth unto the said Jenny Peebles & her three sons hath lend and by these presents doth lend unto the said Janny Peebles widder [sic] & rellox [sic] of Brittain Peebles decd. for her natural life or widowhood the three following Negroes to wit Nan Nell & Lucy with their future increase . . . at her death or marriage I then give and bequeath the said Negroes & their increass [sic] to her sd. three sons say Frederick Allin & Dudley Peebles to be divided between them as she may think proper & and if she should die without Will in that case its my will & desire they should be equally divided between the three boys . . . This Indenture made this 5th Day of March 1789 BETWEEN Robert Mabry & Rebecca his wife John Mason William Mason William Harrison & Benjamin Jones Executors &c of the Last Will and Testament of James Mason decd. and John Mason eldest son & heir of the said James Mason decd. of the one part & Sterling Peebles of the County of Brunswick of the other part whereas the said James Mason decd. did in and by his Last Will and Testament bearing date the 27th Day of January which was in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred & eight four amongst other things direct [sic] and equire [sic] his said executors as aforesaid to sell and dispose of sundry lands & of which he the said James Mason decd. died seized & possessed as may more fully appear by the said Last Will & Testament of the said James Mason now remaining of record in the worshipful court of Greensville refference [sic] being there unto had . . . have disposed of one hundred and forty nine acres . . . part of the said lands so as aforesaid left by the said James Mason deceased for that purpose for the valuable consideration of the sum of five hundred and seventy pounds . . . do grant bargain & sell alien enfeoff & confirm unto the said Sterling Peebles . . . the aforesaid tract of land containing by estimation one hundred & forty nine acres . . . which said land is situate lying and being on both sides of the Reedy Creek in the aforesaid County of Brunswick and is bounded as follows to wit, BEGINNING at a live oak on the West side the said creek thence South thirty degrees West one hundred and sixty nine poles to a white oak thence South twenty five degrees East one hundred and twenty two poles to a white oak thence to a corner red oak at the Main Road thence along a line of marked trees down the said road to the aforesaid Reedy Creek thence down the various meanders of the run of the said creek to a hicory in James Halls line thence North thirty four poles East sixty eight degrees [sic] to a small oak thence North six and an half degrees East eighty poles to a red oak thence North twenty seven and an half degrees West seventy four poles to a small white oak thence North fifty five and an half degrees West fifty poles to a small white oak on the side the Mill Pond thence down the edge of the highest water mark of the said Mill Pond to the aforesaid Mill Dam thence along the said Mill Dam to the main run of the aforesaid Reedy Creek thence up the various meanders of the run of the said creek to the live oak at the BEGINNING including one water grist mill . . . This Indenture made this 16th Day of October 1790 BETWEEN Benjamin Bridgforth of the County of Notoway [sic] of the one part and John Bridgforth of Brunswick County of the other part . . . for the fatherly love and affection which he beareth unto his son John and for his advancement in life and for and in consideration of the sum of five shillings . . . hath given granted bargained & sold unto the said John Bridgforth one certain tract or parcel of land lying & being [in] the County of Brunswick on Notoway [sic] River & bounded as follows to wit BEGINNING at a secamore at the mouth of the Licking Branch in James Tarpleys line thence along Tarpleys line to a red oak thence along the said Tarpleys line to an ash in the said Licking Branch thence up the branch to Haskins line thence along Haskins line to Thomas Manson's line thence along his line to John Mansons line thence along John Mansons line to a sugar tree on Notoway River thence down the said river to the BEGINNING containing four hundred and fifty acres . . . also three Negroes Ellick, Rachel, & Edmund . . . This Indenture of Bargain & Sale was proved by the oaths of Thomas Manson one of the witnesses thereto and having been proved on the 25th Day of October 1790 by the oaths of Hinchia Gilliam and Christopher Haskins also witnesses thereto the same is ordered to be recorded. Deed Book 15, page 119. This Indenture made this 17th Day of December 1790 BETWEEN John McKenny Junr. of the County of Brunswick of the one part and Edwd. Birchett of the County aforesaid of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of eighty three pounds eighteen shillings and seven pence . . . to which I the said John McKenny am just indebted to the said Edward Birchett and honestly desireth to secure and pay the same . . . by these presents do confirm to the sd. Edward Birchett . . . two Negroes Vizt. Charlotte & Will one sorrell mare one feather bed and furniture . . . upon trust nevertheless that the sd. Edwd. Birchett . . . shall after the twenty fifth Day of December one thousand seven hundred and ninety one or as soon as the sd. Edwd. Birchett . . . shall think proper or the sd. John McKenny shall request which ever of these two circumstances doth happen sell for the best price than can be got after ten days publick notice all the above named Chattles and out of the money arising from such sale discharge satisfy and pay to the sd. This Indenture made the 25th Day of October 1790 BETWEEN John Williams & Mary his wife of the County of Brunswick of the one part and Elisha Clark of the same County of the other part . . . for & in consideration of the sum of twenty pounds . . . doth grant bargain sell and confirm unto the said Elisha Clark . . . one certain tract or parcel of land situate lying and being in the said County of Brunswick on Jones Williams line the ordinary near the Courthouse containing two acres . . . This Indenture made this 23rd Day of March [or May] 1769 BETWEEN Frederick Rieves and Mary Magdeleene his wife and Burwell Rieves and Amy his wife of the County of Pittsilvania [sic] of the one part & George Steagall Junr. of the County of Brunswick of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and fifty pounds . . . do grant bargain and sell alien and confirm unto the said George Steagall Junr. . . . one certain tract or parcel [of] land situate lying and being in the County of Brunswick containing three hundred and thirty acres . . . bounded on Briery Creek and the lines of David Merideth John Threadgills Colliers Bottom Steagall and George Steagall Junr. and from thence to the BEGINNING it being all that tract or parsil [sic] of land which the said Fredrick Reaves bought of John Marckel . . . John Jones one of the witnesses to this deed being sworn deposed and said that he saw Aaron Steagall make his mark as a witness to this deed and that he wrote the words Aaron Steagall his mark at the request of the said Aaron and the same having been proved on the 24th Day of April 1769 by the oaths of the said John Jones and Joseph Blanks also witnesses the same is ordered to be recorded. KNOW all men by these presents that I Robert Brister of Brunswick County have bargained sold . . . unto William Thomas Pennington . . . household [ --- ] furniture consisting of three beds two chests [ ] bottles and many other articles . . . for what the said Brister is owing . . . by Bond and which the said Pennington is bound . . . for the said Brister and whom the said debts [--- ] the above articles are released from being the property of the said Pennington & that the same may be [--- ] out further expense I the said Brister do entitle the said Pennington to make sale of the same or as much thereof as will discharge the above . . . this the 21st Day of December 1790. This Indenture made this 26th Day of April 1791 BETWEEN Edmund Webb of the County of Brunswick & Commonwealth of Virginia of the one part and James Frame of said County & Commonwealth of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred & fifty pounds . . . which the said Edmund Webb owes and is justly indebted for to John Drummond of the County of Dinwiddie & said Commonwealth surviving partner of Allan Love & Company late of Brunswick County and said Commonwealth and which he the said Edmund Webb honestly and earnestly wishes and desires to secure satisfy & pay . . . doth grant give sell alien & absolutely confirm to the said James Frame . . . a certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Brunswick containing by estimation four hundred acres . . . and bounded by the lands of John White, Burrell Barker, Herbert Haynes & Nathan Mosely likewise twelve Negroes Vizt. This Indenture made the 4th day of May 1791 BETWEEN Sterling Clack Thornton and Mary his wife of the county of Brunswick of the one part and Richard Jones of West Creek in the county of Amelia of the other part . . . that whereas the said Sterling Clack Thornton and Mary his wife by the names of Sterling Clack Thornton and Mary Jones by their certain marriage contract in writing bearing date the thirteenth day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy-seven did bargain sell assign and makeover unto the said Richard Jones . . . certain slaves and personal estate in the said deed of settlement expressed named and enumerated as will more fully appear by the said deed of record in the worshipful court of Amelia to which is for more certainty referred in trust for certain uses expressed therein and the said Richard Jones for and in consideration of the said deed of settlement and on faith and confidence of the estate so as aforesaid secured to him hath laid out and expended to the use of the said Sterling Clack Thornton and Mary his wife at their special instance & request sundry sums of money amounting in the whole to seventy-seven pounds five shillings . . . This Indenture made this eighth day of October 1788 BETWEEN Henry Sadler and Mary his wife & Thomas Sadler Senr. of the county of Brunswick of the one part and Griffin Stith of the same county of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and twenty-five pounds . . . doth grant bargain and sell unto the said Griffin Stith . . . one hundred & fifty eight acres of land . . . situate in the said county of Brunswick on both sides of the Gum Branch adjoining Buckner Stiths lines, one hundred and fifty acres part therof being the upper part of 398 acres of land granted to the said Thomas Sadler Senr. by letters patent bearing date the 26th day of September 1760 having been conveyed to the said Henry Sadler by the said Thomas Sadler Senr. by a deed of gift bearing date the 26th day of February 1770 and divided from the residue by a line BEGINNING at a corner red oak thence to the Creasey Branch thence down the said branch to the mouth thereof thence to a pine on said Buckner Stiths line near the mouth of the Lawyers Road the other eight acres lying on the East side of the said one hundred and fifty acres and adjoining Hicks's line having been purchased by the said Thomas Sadler Senr. of one Proctor & by him given to the said Henry Sadler without passing a deed therefore and for the conveyance which the said Thomas Sadler Senr. is now made a party to these presence . . . signed by Henry Sadler (by his mark) Mary Sadler (by her mark) and Thomas Sadler. KNOW all men by these presence that I John Wills of the county of Brunswick for and in consideration of the sum of five shillings . . . to me in hand paid by Matthew Davis [Daves] executor & etc. of the last will and testament of Robert Powell decd. late of the county of Greensville . . . but more especially for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and fifty pounds . . . do and by me owing to the estate of the above named Robert Powell decd. do by two Bonds made payable to Matthew Davis executor of the said Robert Powell for seventy-five pounds each one payable the 25th day of December one thousand seven hundred ninety-two the other on the 25th day of December one thousand seven hundred and ninety-three and the said John Wills now and at all times having a desire to pay & satisfy the said Matthew Davis the above mentioned sums and all costs and charges . . . doth grant, bargain sell, alien enfeoff & confirm unto the said Matthew Davis in trust to and for the use purpose and benefit of the said Matthew Davis executor of the aforesaid and to and for the purpose of paying the aforementioned debts interests and all costs & charges . . . all that certain tract part or parcel of land situate lying and being in the county of Brunswick containing by estimation two hundred and fifty acres . . . and bounded as will more fully and at large appear reference being had to a deed from Wm. Bailey & wife to Robert Powell and by Matthew Davis executor & etc. to said Robert Powell decd. duly recorded in the county court of Brunswick to the said John Wills also the following slaves namely Anica a woman age 30 Milly a woman age 19 Mary a woman age 26 Fanny [Janny] a girl age 4 Isaac a boy age 3 . . . and it is hereby agreed on by and between the parties to these presence that in case the said John Wills shall fail to pay the said debts interest and all reasonable charges & costs arising thereon on or before the 25th day of December 1792 as to seventy-five pounds and seventy-five pounds on or before the 25th day of December 1793 that then the said Matthew Davis may lawfully sell & dispose of so much of the said trust estate above mentioned by lawfully advertising the same and selling for the best price that may be had for such estate or such part thereof as may be most convenient to sell having first sold the said slaves unless agreed on by the consent of the said John Wills and then the land for so much thereof as shall be fully and amply sufficient to pay and satisfy the whole debt interest and all costs and all charges arising thereon . . . in testimony whereof the said John Wills and the said Matthew Davis exector & etc. have hereunto set their hands and affixed their seals this 27th day of February 1792 signed by John Wills and Matthew Davis witnessed by Wm. This Indenture of Bargain and Sale from John Bennitt and Elizabeth his wife and John Ingram and Sarah his wife to Robert Latimer was acknowledged by the said John Bennitt & John Ingram and his wife she being first privily examined as the law directs did voluntarily assent thereto. This Indenture made this 12th day of March 1792 BETWEEN Samuel Harwell Senr. of the one part and Samuel Harwell and all the children of Samuel Harwell decd. of the other part witnesseth that the said Samuel Harwell Senr. for and in the consideration of the natural love and affection which he beareth unto his said son Samuel Harwell and all Samuel Harwells children as also for the consideration of five shillings to him in hand paid . . . doth lend grant infeoff and confirm unto them the said Samuel Harwell until Samuel Harwell's youngest child comes to the age of 21 years and then if there is a Bond out which the said Samuel Harwell is security for Ransom Harwell and also a bill of sale which Ransom Harwell gave to Thomas Hardiway which he is securtiy to also the said Samuel Harwell is to keep the said negroes in possession until the said Samuel Harwell is clear of Bond & bill of sale then the said children is to have the said negroes and their increase to be equally divided between them and to their heirs and assigns forever three negroes namely Milly Claiborne and Dick . . . signed by Samuel Harwell (by his mark) and witnessed by Thos. This Indenture made this 8th day of March 1792 BETWEEN Samuel Harwell Senr. of the one part and Tabitha Abernathy and her children of the other part witness that the said Samuel Harwell Senr. for and in consideration of the natural love and affection which he beareth unto his said daughter Tabatha Abernathy and her children as also for the consideration of five shillings to him in hand paid . . . doth lend grant infeoff and confirm unto the said Tabatha Abernathy during her natural life and at her death then I give them to her children . . . several negroes Selah and all her children and all their increase and if the said Tabatha Abernathy dies before her youngest child comes to the age of fourteen years then Selah and her children and their increase to be divided between her children also I lend to Frederick Abernathy one negro man named Jack his wife and at his death to be equally divided between the children of the above mentioned Tabatha Abernathy . . . signed by Samuel Harwell (by his mark) and witnessed by Charles Harris and George Williams (by his mark).
