THE COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA TO Thomas Cocke John Goodwyn and John Fisher Gentlemen Greetings of the County of Greensville and State of Virginia whereas William Tomlinson and Elizabeth his wife of the County of Greensville by their certain Indenture of Bargain and Sale bearing date the 23rd day of April 1792 have sold unto Anselm Ivey of the County of Greensville the fee simple estate of eighty two acres of land with the appurtenances lying and being in the County of Brunswick and whereas the said Elizabeth can not conveniently travel to our Court . . . to make acknowledgment of the said conveyance therefore we do give unto you or any two or more of you power to receive the acknowledgment which the said Elizabeth shall be will to make before you . . . and we do therefore command you that you personally go to the said Elizabeth and receive her acknowledgment of the same and examine her privately and apart from the said William her husband . . . the 28th day of May 1792. By virtue of this Commission to us directed we the subscribers have privily examined Elizabeth the wife of the within named William Tomlinson . . . and have received her acknowledgment of the Indenture hereunto annexed . . . certified under our hands & seals this 26th day of July 1792. This Commission for taking the relinquishment of Elizabeth Tomlinson wife of William Tomlinson to an Indenture of Bargain and Sale to Anselm Ivey together with the Certificate of the Execution thereof was returned which is ordered to be recorded. Deed Book 15, page 309. To all persons to whom these presents shall I Matthew Biship do send greeting know ye that I the said Matthew Biship of the County of Brunswick for and in consideration of the love good will and affection which I have and do bear toward my loving sons John and Hermon Bishops of the same county have given and granted and by these presents do freely give and grant unto the said John and Hermon Bishops . . . a certain tract of land lying and being in the County of Brunswick and adjoining the lands of William Major Sterling Edmunds & John Flood Edmunds and containing by estimation three hundred & six acres to be divided by a new line passing through the middle leaving one hundred & fifty six acres to the North of said new line which I give to John Biship it being the place he now cultivates and Hermon Bishop to possess the South part of the above land from said line which is now occupied by him and containing one hundred & fifty acres . . . this 8th day of September 1792. Prescilla Brown wife of Lewis Brown this day acknowledged an Indenture of Bargain & Sale from Lewis Brown to Isham Raney she being first privily examined as the Law directs did voluntarily assent thereto. To all to whom these presents shall come know ye that we William Keen Samford, James Samford, Joseph Samford, William Garner, James Johnson & James Laffoon, all of the County of Brunswick and State of Virginia for divers good causes we thereunto moving have constituted and appointed and by these presents do constitute and appoint John Haggard of the County of Surry and State of North Carolina are true and lawful attorney for us and in our name and on our behalf to enter upon and take possession of a certain tract or parcel of land granted to us by deed being dated the 9th day of August one thousand seven hundred and eighty seven containing of six hundred and forty acres lying and being in the County of Surry and State of North Carolina as by deed also describing the boundaries of the same we appoint and hereby empower the said attorney to have the said land surveyed or part thereof so as now certainly and accurately to have the said land or any part thereof ____ its boundary regulated and ascertained according to the aforesaid deed and whereas there is many disputes and other claims on part of the said lands contained in the said boundaries of the aforesaid deed our intents is that our aforesaid attorney do regulate the same and fix the boundaries in full state by bringing carrying on and compleating [sic] any suit or suits at law for perfecting the same also to compound and agree with any person or persons therein concerned and whatsoever part he may relinquish to make any deed of conveyance for us and in our names to the fee simple estate thereof and further to do all and every act or thing that may be necessarily to regulate and settle the boundaries thereof and all & every part of the titles in any manner of dispute and all & every act or thing our said attorney may do in and about the same shall be binding against us our heirs executors & administrators and further we do hereby empower him the said John Haggard for us that after the boundaries and titles of the said lands are settled to convey the same to Nathaniel Hix of the County of Surry and State of North Carolina and such conveyance so made by him the said John Haggard for us to the said Nathaniel Hix as aforesaid shall be binding to all intends and purposes as if we were present or did it ourselves. This Indenture made this 15th day of December 1792 between William Wyche Wilkins trustee for Soloman Hall & Edmund Wilkins of the County of Greensville of the one part and Lockett Mitchell of the same County of the other part . . . whereas the said Soloman Hall on the 26th of November 1790 entered into and acknowledged a deed of trust for five hundred acres of land to secure a certain sum of money due from the said Soloman Hall unto Edmund Wilkins to which instrument the said William Wilkins was appointed trustee for the said Soloman Hall & Edmund Wilkins and the said William W. This Indenture made the 22nd day of April 1793 between John Stith and Ann his wife and Griffin Stith trustee for Meade and Stiths and Andrew Meade of Brunswick County of the one part and Walter Derrington of the same County of the other part . . . for and in the consideration of the sum of one hundred and fourteen pounds eight shillings & six pence . . . do grant bargain & sell alien and confirm unto the said Walter Derrington . . . a certain tract or parcel of land containing one hundred ninety nine acres . . . situate in the said County of Brunswick and bounded as followeth BEGINNING on Halls Branch at the mouth of a small branch thence up the said Halls Branch as it meanders to Richard Stith, Junr. corner a small ash on the same thence along his line South sixteen and an half degrees West at two hundred & seven poles crossing Burches Road two hundred and twenty two poles to a shrub oak on Griffin Stiths line thence along his line South eighty degrees East fifty four poles to a black jack on John Abernathys line thence along his line North sixteen degrees East thirty nine poles to his corner pine on the said road thence down the said road as it meanders one hundred and twenty eight poles to a small black jack on the North side of the said road, thence a new line North eleven degrees East fifty eight poles to three small black gums on the aforesaid small branch and thence down the said small branch as it meanders to the beginning . . . reserving nevertheless unto the said John Stith the privilege & use of the new cleared ground taken within the said bounds until the finishing of the present crop . . . ARTICLES of Agreement made and entered into this 5th day of April 1793 between John Sturdivant of the one part and Susanna Collier of the other part whereas by the grace of God a marriage is shortly intended to be had and solenmized between the said John Sturdivant and the said Susanna Collier and it is intended convenanted and agreed between the said parties that the said Susanna shall not hereafter at any time whatsoever claim dower of and in any part of the land and other property herein after mentioned (to wit) six hundred acres of land being a part of the land that the said John now lives on one half of which to be taken of at the lower end by a line running due North and South and the other half at the upper end by a line running due North and South and also the following property (to wit) Robin, Ben, Peter, Fanny, Dick, Davie, Jett, Sam, Surry, Tom, Agg, Tilley, Bob, Edenborough, George, & Daniel, and their future increase; also one hundred and fifty pounds cash to be raised out of the estate of the said John not herein mentioned at his death which belong to him the said John Sturdivant before the said intermarriage now these articles witness, and the said John Sturdivant and the said Susanna Collier expressly agree and convenant hereby that in consideration of the premises and of the said intermarriage that the said Susanna Collier is not hereafter at any time to own possess claim or demand any dower in or to the said estate above mentioned or any part thereof or any part of the estate which the said John shall have or hold at the time of his death untill the said sum of one hundred and fifty pounds be first taken therefrom but that the said John Sturdivant shall have hold occupy give or bequeath the same in any manner whatsoever; as he shall think proper and that the said Susanna Collier shall not claim demand or possess dower of or in any part of the aforementioned property but that the same shall be and remain vested in the said John Sturdivant in the same manner as if the said intermarriage had not taken place . . . Martha Dobbins wife of Moses Dobbins this day acknowledged and Indenture of Bargain and Sale from Moses Dobbins to Frederick Burdge she being first privily examined as the Law directs did voluntarily assent thereto. This Indenture made the 22nd day of April 1793 between Lester Morris and Frances Morris his wife of the County of Brunswick of the one part and James Duggar of the same County of the other part . . . for and in consideration of forty pounds . . . doth bargain sell alien enfeoff release and confirm unto the said James Duggar . . . one certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Brunswick on both sides the North fork of the Reedy Creek containing one hundred acres and is bounded as follows (to wit) BEGINNING at a gum tree where Jesse Edward's & Ruffins land corners thence along Ruffins line, to Lewis Brown Jrs. line and thence along the said Browns line to Jesse Edwards line, and continuing along the said Edward's line to the beginning . . . KNOW all men by these presents that we Thomas Stith, Jr. and Charles Ingram of the County of Brunswick for and in consideration of the sum of fifty five pounds . . . by these presents to bargain and sell unto John Clayton of the same County one Negroe woman slave named Pamelia together with all her increase . . . the 12th day of December 1792. This Bill of Sale was proved by the oaths of Joshua Lucy & William Kelly two of the witnesses thereto as to Charles Ingram and having been proved on the 25th day of March last by the oaths of John Easter & Thomas Stith, Senr. also witnesses thereto as to Thomas Stith, Jr. the same is ordered to be recorded. TO ALL PEOPLE to whom these present writtings [sic] shall come I Peter Thomas Senr. of the County of Brunswick & Colony of Virginia free state send greeting &C know ye that I the said Peter Thomas Senr. for and in consideration of the natural affection and love which I have and do bear unto my son Daniel Thomas Senr. have given and granted and by these presents do give grant and by these presents do confirm unto my well beloved son Daniel Thomas all and singular my goods chattels household stuff brass pewter bedding and all other my substanance [sic] whatsoever movable and immovable in what place or places so ever . . . this 3rd day of May 1792. This Deed of Gift was proved by the oath of Thomas Chappell Singleton a witnessed thereto and having been proved on the 22nd day of October 1792 by the oath of Randolph Singleton also a witness thereto the same is ordered to be recorded. Deed Book 15, page 394. KNOW all men by these presents that we Henry Kellias Benjamin Ogburn and Robert Morris are held and firmly bound unto the Gentl. Justices of the County Court of Brunswick in the just and full sum of five hundred pounds to be paid to the said justices . . . to which payment well and truly to be made we bind ourselves . . . jointly and severally firmly by these presents sealed with our seal and dated this 22nd day of April 1793. The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas Thomas Morris dyed sometime passed [sic] leaving his daughter Elizabeth Morris two negroes [sic] and other property which Elizabeth is at present in a state of insanity and unable to manage the said estate and application hath been made to the Court Brunswick to appoint trustees to manage the said estate and whereas the above named Henry Kellias William Ogborn & Robert Morris hath been so appointed by the said Court to take charge and management of the said estate now if the above named Henry Kellias William Ogborne and Robert Morris shall well and truly husband and so manage the said estate and take care that the said Elizabeth Morris shall not suffer for the want bedding cloathin [sic] and good wholesome diet and shall after the death of the said Elizabeth Morris surrender up the said estate or whatever remain in their hands . . . to the legal representatives of the said Elizabeth Morris then the above obligation to be void or else to remain in full force & virtue sealed and delivered in presence of the Court. This Indenture made this 23rd day of June 1791 between James Mastin Williams of Pittsylvania County and State of Virginia and Willmouth his wife for himself and also for William MCraw and Susanna his wife Elizabeth Walker Thomas T. Williams and Tabitha his wife of the Counties of Pittsylvania & Halifax of the one part and Frederick Lanier of the County of Brunswick and State of Virginia of the other part witnesseth that the said said James Mastin Williams and Willmouth his wife for themselves and also the said James Mastin Williams for William MCraw & Susannah his wife Elizabeth Walker, Thomas T. Williams and Tabitha his wife who have appointed him their proper and lawful attorney in fact as will appear by a power of attorney by them executed to the said James and recorded in the County Court of Pittsylvania on the 21th day of February 1791 hath given granted and sold unto the said Frederick Lanier for and in consideration of the sum of forty pounds . . . that tract of land lying & being in the County of Brunswick and in St. Andrews Parish containing one hundred and sixty acres . . . which was granted unto Joseph Cannon, by letters Patent bearing date (from under the hand of Robert Dinwiddie the sixteenth day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and fifty six and which hath descended to the said James Mastin Williams & Willmouth William MCraw & Susannah his wife Elizabeth Walker Thomas T. William & Tabitha his wife as coheirs of James Walker decd. . . . Signed by J. M. This Indenture made this 23rd day of July 1791 between William Shell of the County of Brunswick and State of Virginia of the one part and John Shell of the County and State aforesaid . . . for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and forty pounds . . . do grant bargain sell alien release enfeoff and confirm unto the said John Shell . . . one certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Brunswick and State of Virginia containing by estimation one hundred and forty acres . . . and bounded as follows (vizt) BEGINNING at a scrub white oak in Morrisons line thence along the said line to whare [sic] it crosses the West Branch thence up the meanders of the said branch to a Maple in the B. being a corner tree thence a new line to the first station . . . This Indenture made this 19th day of January 1793 between John Nanny of the County of Brunswick and Commonwealth of Virginia of the one part and Willie Harrison of the said County and Commonwealth of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of twenty nine pounds thirteen shillings and *five pence half penny . . . which the said John Nanny owes and is justly indebted to Allan Love and which he the said John Nanny honestly and earnestly wishes and desires to secure satisfy and pay to the said Allan Love and in consideration of the further sum of five shillings to him in hand paid by the said Willie Harrison . . . doth grant give sell alien and absolutely confirm to the said Willie Harrison . . . a certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Brunswick containing by estimation one hundred and fifty acres . . . and bounded by the lands of Owen Myrick, Jesse Jones, Mordicai Jones?, and William Howard . . . Upon trust nevertheless that the said Willie Harrison . . . shall and will after the 25th day of December next ensueing the date hereof when he the said Willie Harrison shall think proper of the said John Nanny require the same which ever of these events may first happen sell after giving ten days previous publick notice and advertisement for the best price that can be had for the same the said land and out of the money arising had or paid by the sale of the said land so to be sold pay or cause to be paid unto the said Allan Love as aforesaid . . . the said just and full sum of twenty nine pounds thirteen shillings and *nine pence half penny . . .
