This Indenture made this twenty fourth of January in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand seven hundred and eighty, by and Between Ephraim Peebles Christopher Foster Barham Hines and Anne his wife of the County of Brunswick of the one part and William Hines of the County of Southampton of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of five hundred pounds current money of Virginia . . . hath bargained and sold, aliened and enfeoffed confirmed and made . . . and make over unto the said William Hines . . . one certain tract or parcel of land situate lying and being the county of Brunswick and on both sides of the Fox branch and bounded as followeth, to wit: Beginning at and oak the corner tree of John Parhams and Harbert Reeves, thence a straight course along the said Harbert Reeves line to Kirby Moodys line, thence along the said Moodys line to John Turners corner Pine, thence along the said John Turners line to a White oak and corner of Batt Petersons line from thence along the various courses of the said Peterson line to Nathaniel Hicks line from thence along the said Hicks line to a Spanish Red oak a corner of John Parhams and from thence along the various courses of the said Parhams to the Beginning containing by estimation three thousand and twenty two acres be the same more or less being all that tract or parcel of Land whereon Barham Hines formerly lived . . . This Indenture made the fourth day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy nine Between Tarpley Dickerson and Jinney his wife of the County of Brunswick of the one part and Aaron Haskins of the County of Powhatan of the other part Witnesseth . . . for and in consideration of the sum of four thousand five hundred pounds current money of Virginia . . . grant, bargain and sell unto the said Aaron Haskins . . . one Certain tract or Parcel of Land lying and being in the County of Brunswick and containing by Estimation one hundred and eighty two acres be the same more or less on the north side of Cedar Creek and bounded as followeth, Viz, BEGINNING at the moth (sic) of the great branch thence up the said branch as it meanders to Thomas Jones's line and joining the land of William Weaver Richard Ramsey and thence Down the said Cedar Creek as it meanders to the BEGINNING . . . This Indenture made this the seventeenth Day of January in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand seven hundred and eighty Between Joseph Tooke of the County of Brunswick and Province of Virginia of the one part and John Crew of the same County and Province of the other part Witnesseth that . . . for and in consideration of the sum of fifty pounds Current money of Virginia . . . doth give grant bargain sell and enfeoff and confirm unto the said John Crew . . . a Certain tract or Parcel of Land situate lying and being in Brunswick County . . . on the south side of Fountains Creek containing by Estimation one hundred acres be the same more or less and bounded as followeth, Viz, BEGINNING at a Scaly bark hickory on the said Creek on Peterson's Line thence along the said line to a Corner Pine on the County line thence along said line to a Corner white oak in the said County line thence a straight line to a Corner Red oak on the said Fountains Creek then Down the said Creek to the first station . . . THE COMMONWEALTH of Virginia To Thomas Stith Andrew Meade and Drury Stith Gentlemen Greeting WHEREAS John Loyd and Sarah his wife by their certain Indenture of bargain and sale bearing date the 22nd Day of November last past have sold and conveyed unto Thomas Lundie the fee simple Estate of fifty Acres of Land more or less lying and being in the County of Brunswick and whereas the said Sarah cannot conveniently travel to the Court of our said County to make acknowledgement of the said Conveyance therefore we do give unto you or any two of you power to receive the Acknowledgement which the said Sarah shall be willing to make before you of Conveyance aforesaid contained in the said Indenture which is hereto annexed and we do therefore command you or any two of you that you do personally go the said Sarah and receive her Acknowledgement of the same and examine her privily and apart from her said husband whether she doth the same freely and voluntarily without the persuasions or threats of her said husband. And whether she be willing that the same should be recorded in the County of the said County of Brunswick and when you have received her Acknowledgement of the same and examined her as aforesaid that you distinctly and openly Certify as thereof in our said Court under your hands and seals sending then there the said Indenture And this Writ WITNESS Peter Pelham Junior Clerk of our said Court the fourth Day of March 1780 In the fourth Year of the Commonwealth. This Indenture made the eighty Day of November, 1779 BETWEEN George Ledbetter and Elizabeth his wife, William Dale and Sarah his wife of the one part and Henry Mangum of the other part WITNESSETH . . . for and in consideration of the sum of five thousand Pounds current money of Virginia . . . have bargained sold enfeoffed released and confirmed unto the said Henry Mangum . . . on certain tract or parcel of Land situate lying in Brunswick County and on the south side of Fountains Creek containing by Estimation two hundred and seventy five acres be the same more or less with a water grist Mill standing on the above said Creek and the land bounded as follows to wit BEGINNING at the Creek in Nathan Harris's line thence bounded on the said Harrisons line to Henry Mangums own line thence along his line to John Vicks line thence along his line to Pearsons line thence along Pearsons line to a new marked line of the said Pearsons thence along the new marked line down to the Creek thence up the said Creek to the first station taking in the above said Mill together will all woods ways water courses profits commoditus heriditaments and appurtenances thereunto belonging . . . This Indenture made this on the sixth Day of March, 1780 BETWEEN Thomas Proctor of the County of Brunswick and Parish of Saint Andrew of the one part and Featherston Sadler of the other part WITNESSETH . . . for and in consideration of the sum of six hundred and seventy five pounds . . . hath granted bargained and sold aliened and confirmed unto the said Fetherston (sic) Sadler . . . all that Tract or parcel of Land situate in Brunswick County adjoining Thomas Sadlers containing eighty acres the said more or less and bounded as followeth, Viz, BEGINNING at a spanish oak on Thomas Sadlers line thence towards east to the middle Creek thence toward north along the said Creek to Jeremiah Hixes Corner white oak thence by a straight line towards west to a Pine on Thomas Sadlers line thence along that line to the BEGINNING . . . This Indenture made the 24th Day of April, 1780 BETWEEN Samuel Harwell Senr. of Brunswick County of the one part and Robert Abernathy of the same County, son in Law to the said Samuel Harwell of the other part WITNESSETH that the Samuel Harwell as well for and in Consideration of the natural love and affection which he hath and beareth unto the said Robert Abernathy his son in Law as also for the better maintenance and preferment of the said Robert Abernathy Hath given granted aliened enfeoffed and confirmed and by these presents doth give grant alien enfeoff and confirm unto the said Robert Abernathy his heirs and assigns forever two hundred acres of Land situate in the said County of Brunswick on the south side of Reedy Creek to be laid off out of the upper end of the tract whereon the Samuel Harwell now lives joining Cuthbert Smiths lines . . . This Indenture made the twenty fifth Day of January, 1777 BETWEEN Athur (sic) Turner and Elizabeth his wife of the Parish of Meherrin and County of Brunswick of the one part and John Lightfoot of the Parish and County aforesaid of the other part WITNESSETH . . . for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred pounds . . . do grant bargain and sell alien enfeoff release and confirm to the said John Lightfoot . . . one certain tract or parcel of Land containing by estimation two hundred and fifty acres lying and being on the south side of Fountains Creek in the County of Brunswick and bounded as followeth (to wit) BEGINNING at a white oak at Fountains Creek thence South forty degree west one hundred and eight five poles to a Red Oak thence south forty degrees east one hundred and sixty poles to a white oak thence south seventy two degrees east seventy four poles to a red oak thence north forty five degrees east one hundred and twenty two poles to a hickory at Fountains Creek thence up the said Creek to the BEGINNING and being a tract or parcel of Land granted to John Linch by patent bearing date the twenty eighth day of September one thousand seven hundred and twenty eight . . . Deed Book 14, page 20 This Indenture made this twenty second Day of May, 1780 BETWEEN John Bishop of the County of Brunswick of the one part and Laurance House of the same County of the other part whereas a certain Nicholas Blanks Junr. of the state of North Carolina by Indenture bearing date the eleventh Day of January one thousand seven hundred and seventy nine for the securing the payment of a Debt of one hundred and twenty one pounds four shillings due from him to the said John Bishop did convey the fee simple estate of two hundred and eighty five acres of Land to the said John Bishop in Trust to sell and dispose thereof for the best price he could get and after discharging the said debt interest and expenses of the sale to restore the surplus to the said Nicholas Blanks, And whereas the said Nicholas Blanks hath since the making the Indenture aforesaid made payment of his Debt so as aforesaid due to the said John Bishop and hath also agreed for the sale of the said Land with the said Lurance (sic) House who in consequence thereof hath received a Deed from the said Nicholas Blanks conveyed to the said House and his heirs the title of the said Blanks and his heirs in the said Lands which deeds are duly recorded in the County Court of Brunswick reference being thereto had may more fully appear And the said Luarance (sic) House being desirous of receiving from the said John Bishop a Deed conveying all his right and title in the premises Now this Indenture Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of five shillings to the said John Bishop in hand paid by the said Laurance House the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged he the said John Bishop hath granted bargained and sold and by these presents doth grant bargain and sell unto the said Laurance House and his heirs all the above mentioned tract or parcel of Land lying and being in the Parish of Saint Andrew and said County of Brunswick containing two hundred and eighty five acres and bounded by the bounds of Richard Stewart, James Walker, Drury Stith's entry and the aforesaid Laurance House with the houses and Houses ways waters water courses profits commodities advantages hereditaments and appurtenances . . . The Commonwealth of Virginia To Thomas Stith, James Wall and Littleberry Robinson Gentlemen Greeting WHEREAS John Cock and Lucy his wife by their certain Indenture of bargain and sale bearing date the twenty fourth Day of November 1779 have sold and conveyed unto William Stark Junr. the fee simple Estate in and to two hundred and ninety five acres of Land . . . and whereas the said Lucy cannot conveniently travel to the Court . . . to make acknowledgement of the said conveyance Therefore we do give unto you or any two of you power to receive the Acknowledgment which the said Lucy shall be willing to make before you of the conveyance aforesaid contained in the said Indenture which is hereto annexed. And we do therefor command you or any two of you that you do personally go to the said Lucy and receive her Acknowledgement of the same and examine her privily and apart from the said John Cocke her husband Whether she doth the same freely and voluntarily without the persuasions or threats of her said Husband . . . that you distinctly and openly certify as thereof in our said Court under your hands and seals sending then there the said Indenture and this writ Witness Peter Pelham Junr. This Indenture made this twentyeth Day of May 1780 BETWEEN Lewis Lanier of the County of Dinwiddie and Anne his wife of the one part and Fredrick Grigg of the County of Brunswick of the other part WITNESSETH that the said Lewis Lanier for and in consideration of the sum of seven hundred and fifty pounds current money of Virginia to him by the said Fredrick in hand paid . . . do grant bargain and sell unto the said Fredrick Grigg and to his heirs and assigns forever, all that certain Tract piece or parcel of Land situate lying and being on Hickes branch on the aforesaid County of Brunswick containing by estimation one hundred and thirty six acres . . . and bounded as followeth (to wit) BEGINNING at a Pine in the aforesaid Hickes branch, thence up the various courses of the run of the said branch to a black Gum, thence North seventy eight degrees west ninety six Poles to a Pine, thence North fifty degrees West thirty six Poles to a pine thence south two hundred and sixteen Poles along a new choped (sic) line between the said Fredrick Grigg and Isaac Rawlings to a black Jack on a path thence south eighty nine degrees east thirty four poles to Allen's Road, thence down the said Road to a small white oak, thence along a new choped (sic) line between the said Grigg and Fredrick Whittington, North ninety four poles to a black Jack, thence along the said new choped (sic) line East one hundred and twenty six Poles to a shrub white oak thence North, North East twenty two Poles to the BEGINNING . . . This Indenture made the 20th Day of May, 1780 BETWEEN Lewis Lanier of the County of Dinwiddie and Anne his wife of the one part and Jesse Grigg of the County of Brunswick of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of three hundred pounds . . . doth grant bargain and sell unto the said Jesse Grigg . . . all that certain tract piece or parcel of Land situate lying and being on the aforesaid County of Brunswick containing by estimation one hundred acres . . . and is bounded as followeth (to wit) BEGINNING at a Pine a corner between the said Jesse Grigg & Isaac Rawlings thence South sixty six degrees west ninety two Poles to a small red oak, thence south seven degrees west sixty nine poles to a Pine, thence North eighty five degrees east thirty seven degrees to a corner tree down thence South ten degrees East one hundred and fifty seven Poles two small Hickorys, thence South eighty nine degrees East thirty six Poles to a Turkey oak a corner between the said Jesse Grigg and the aforesaid Isaac Rawlings, thence along a new choped (sic) line between the said Grigg and Rawlings North two hundred and fifty six poles to the BEGINNING it being part of the Tract of Land lately purchased by the said Lewis Lanier of Harwood Major as will appear by Deed duly Recorded in the Worshipful Court of the aforesaid County of Brunswick reference thereunto being had will more fully appear . . . This Indenture made the eighth Day of June 1780 BETWEEN Thomas Jackson Senr. of the Province of South Carolina of the one part and Mark Jackson of the County of Brunswick and Colony of Virginia of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of ten thousand pounds . . . doth grant bargain sell alien release and confirm unto the said Mark Jackson . . . one certain Tract or parcel of Land containing seven hundred and thirty Acres lying and being in the County of Brunswick and granted to the said Thomas Jackson Senr., by Letters Patent bearing date at Williamsburg the seventh Day of July one thousand seven hundred and sixty three reference being thereunto had will more fully appear . . . This Indenture made this twenty second Day of July 1780 BETWEEN Henry Mangum and Sarah is wife of the County of Brunswick of the one part and Clement Pynes (or Pyries) Mallory of the said County of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of ten thousand pounds . . . do grant bargain sell alien release and confirm unto the said Clement Pynes (or Pyries) Mallory . . a certain Tract or parcel of Land with a Water Grist Mill thereon lying & being in the County of Brunswick on Fountains Creek containing by estimation fifty acres . . and bounded as followeth (to wit) BEGINNING a Willow Oak on Fountains Creek on Pearsons line thence along the said line to a corner pine on Ezells line thence along a line of new marked trees to a corner Oak from thence to a Beach near fountains Creek from thence down the said Creek including one acre of Land belonging to the said Water Grist Mill to the BEGINNING . . . This Indenture made this twenty fourth day of March 1780 BETWEEN Mark Crowder and Anne his wife of the County of Brunswick of the one part and Thomas Johnson of the same County of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of three thousand pounds . . . doth grant bargain and sell alien and confirm unto the said Thomas Johnson . . . one Tract or parcel of Land containing by estimation two hundred & eighty nine acres . . . lying and being in the County of Brunswick aforesaid adjoining the Ready Creek on the south side thereof and bounded as follows (to wit) BEGINNING at Thomas Johnson corner on the ready Creek thence along the said Johnsons line to Coplain (?) Peebles's line thence along said Peebles's line to Thomas Lewellins line thence along said Lewellins line to Henry Bishops line thence along said Bishops line as it meanders to the BEGINNING . . . KNOW ALL MEN by these Presents that we John Flood Edmunds, Sterling Edmunds and Thomas Edmunds are held and firmly bound unto the Commonwealth of Virginia in the sum of one thousand pounds to which payment well and truly to be made we bind ourselves our heirs Executors and Administrators jointly and severally firmly by these Presents Sealed with our Seals and dated this 24th Day of July 1780 in the fifth year of the Commonwealth. THE CONDITION of the above obligation is such that Whereas the above bound John Flood Edmunds is appointed Sheriff of the County of Brunswick in Virtue of a Commission from his Excellency the Governor bearing date the 2d Day of May last past, IF therefore the said John Flood Edmunds shall well and collect and receive all Officers fees and dues put into hands to collect and duly account for the same to whom such fees and dues are respectively due when required according to Law and shall well and truly execute and due return make of all process and precepts to him directed and pay and satisfy all sums of money and Tobacco by him received in Virtue of any such Precept to the person or persons to whom the same are due his or their Executors Administrators or assigns, and in all other things shall truly and faithfully perform the office of Sheriff aforesaid during his continuance thereon then the above obligation to be void else to remain in full force.
