Will of Samuel Maitland, 1875 - Brunswick Co. VA Book 20 Page 419 In the name of Almighty god, Amen. I Samuel Maitland being of sound mind and memeory do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following, viz. 1st. I lend to my wife Anna, and my three daughters Emily, Caroline and Mary Maitland, fifty acres of land collectively, including the Mansion House and other houses, lying on the North side of the tract on the Flat Rock Road together with all of my Household and Kitchen furniture, my plantation implements, all my stock and crops of kinds, whatever except-what is herein after mentioned to have, hold, and use for their own benefits during their natural lives or celibacy and when they die die, I will that all of the aforesaid land and perishable property be equally divided between my children, who may then be living, or my grandchildren, each set of grandchilden, to have their father's or mother's part collectively. 2nd. I lend to my daughter-in-law, Sally Maitland, widow of my son James C. Maitland to be held by her, during her natural life or celibacy one eighth part of the balance of my tract of land not herein disposed of lying on the south of the fifty acres the lines to run from eadst to west and at her death or marriage, I give the same to her children by my son James C. Maitland. 3rd. I lend to my daughter Martha Morris during her life one eighth of the balance of the tract of land lying south of the fifty acres above mentioned and at her death I give the same to her lawful heirs. 4th. I lend to my son-in-law James M. Maitland during his natural life one eighth part of the balance of the tract of land lying south of the fifty above mentioned and at his death give the same to his children by my daughter Anna Elizabeth Maitland, dec. 5th. I lend to my son William Henry Maitland, one eighth part of the tract of the fifty acres during his life and at his death, I give the same to his lawful heirs. 6th. I lend to my son Hartwell J. Maitland during his natural life one eighth part of the tract of land lying south of the said fifty acres and at his death I give the same to his lawful heirs 7th. I give to my grand daughter Jinnie Maitland one bed and furniture to her and her heirs forever. 8th. My will and desire that no inventory be taken or sale made of any of my estate whatsoever. 9th. I hereby nominate and appoint my two sons Hartwell J. Maitland and William H. Maitland, Executors to this my last Will hereby revoking all wills heretofore made by me and request that the county Court of Brunswick County permit the above named executors to qualify on my Estate without being required to give security.
